Microsoft and Valve do not document a supported way to install the Steam client or Steam games directly on an Xbox console. Your practical options are to play games from the Xbox store, stream a Steam game from a PC to a supported Steam Link device, or use separate Steam hardware.
Can you install Steam on an Xbox?
There is no documented, supported Steam client installation route for standard Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S consoles. Microsoft describes the Xbox console store as offering apps and games verified for Xbox; it is not a way to install arbitrary desktop software. See Microsoft’s Xbox Store guidance.
That means you cannot install the PC version of Steam on the console and use it to download and run Steam games locally. An Xbox controller working with a Steam game on a PC is a separate matter: controller compatibility does not make Steam an Xbox app.
Can you play Steam games on Xbox another way?
Not through a documented Steam app or Steam Link receiver on the console. The alternatives depend on where you want the game to run and which game library you want to use.

How Steam Remote Play works
Valve describes Steam Link as a way to connect a device to a computer running Steam. The computer runs the game and sends its video and audio to a supported receiving device; this is streaming, not installing the Steam game on that receiver. Valve lists device categories such as phones, tablets, TVs, other PCs, Raspberry Pi, and Meta Quest headsets, but not Xbox consoles. Check Valve’s Steam Remote Play page for its current supported-device information.
So, Steam Remote Play is not a supported method for turning an Xbox into a Steam Link receiver. If you want to stream from a gaming PC, use a device Valve supports for Steam Link instead.

Is Xbox Cloud Gaming the same as Steam streaming?
No. Xbox Cloud Gaming streams supported Xbox games through Microsoft’s service. Its catalog and availability depend on factors such as region, plan, platform, and time. Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming page describes supported Xbox games and devices; it does not describe access to a Steam library.
Use Cloud Gaming when the game you want is available through that Xbox service and your device and plan are supported. It does not provide a route to launch games you own on Steam.

What should you use to play Steam games?
Use a PC with Steam
For the direct Steam experience, install and run Steam on a compatible computer. You can play there or stream from that PC to a device supported by Steam Link.
Consider Steam Deck for handheld play
Valve identifies Steam Deck as Steam hardware, and describes SteamOS as providing access to the Steam ecosystem, including the Steam Library. It is a separate handheld, not an Xbox accessory or a way to install Steam on an Xbox. See Valve’s Steam Deck information and SteamOS information.

Choose Xbox for Xbox games
If you want to play on the Xbox you already own, look for the game in the Xbox console store or check whether it is available through Xbox Cloud Gaming on your region, plan, and device. Steam ownership does not itself provide an Xbox version or access to Microsoft’s cloud catalog.
