Valve’s published Linux requirements specify x86_64/AMD64, and its apt repository lists amd64 and i386 packages. On a Raspberry Pi 3 or newer, you can install Steam Link instead: it streams games from a separate computer running Steam, which does the actual game processing.
Steam desktop client and Steam Link are different
The Steam desktop client is the program that runs Steam and games on the computer it is installed on. Valve’s Steam for Linux requirements specify a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 kernel and processor. Its Linux package repository lists amd64 and i386 architectures, and its installation instructions use those packages. Those are not native ARM packages.
That describes Valve’s published Linux installation path; the cited documentation does not establish whether an experimental ARM64 build is available. Do not treat an unofficial workaround or experimental build as a supported native installation.
Steam Link for Raspberry Pi is a separate app. It displays a stream from another computer running Steam; the host computer runs the game. A Pi used this way is a streaming endpoint, not a replacement for the Steam gaming PC.

What works on Raspberry Pi
Valve’s Steam Link support page documents Raspberry Pi 3 or newer. The Steam apps page lists Steam Link for Raspberry Pi 3, 4, and 5. To use it, you need a separate computer running Steam, both devices on the same local network, and a supported input device.
Install Steam Link on a Raspberry Pi
- Start the computer that will host the game and sign in to Steam.
- Connect the Pi and host computer to the same local network.
- On the Pi, open a terminal and run
sudo apt update, thensudo apt install steamlink. - Launch Steam Link from the Games menu or run
steamlinkin a terminal, then follow the connection prompts. - Use a supported controller, keyboard, or mouse to control the streamed game.
Valve recommends a wired network connection for the Pi. It says 5 GHz wireless may work, but is not recommended for the Pi. Listed input options include several wired controllers, DualShock 4, Switch Pro, keyboard, and mouse; consult Valve’s support page for the supported-device details.

What to expect from streaming
Steam Link sends the game from the host computer to the Pi, so the host must be able to run that game. Your experience also depends on the local network and the game itself. Valve does not publish a Pi-specific performance guarantee in its Steam Link guidance, so a particular game’s smoothness or responsiveness cannot be promised from the Pi model alone.
Valve describes the Pi app this way: “The App uses the same streaming technology as Valve’s Steam Link, allowing you to play your favorite games and even spectate VR games right from your Raspberry Pi.” The feature still depends on the separate Steam-running host computer.

What about other ARM Linux devices?
The official Steam client materials cited here document x86_64/AMD64 Linux rather than an ARM installation path. That means you should not assume an ARM Linux device can install the standard Steam desktop package simply because it runs Linux. The Raspberry Pi route Valve documents is Steam Link streaming, not native Steam game installation.
Valve’s Linux troubleshooting guidance discusses Steam support on recent Ubuntu LTS desktops and notes 32-bit OpenGL drivers as a common troubleshooting issue. Those graphics-driver notes do not change the documented CPU architecture requirement for the desktop client.
