Xbox Game Pass is a recurring subscription that gives you access to a changing catalog of games and, depending on the plan, benefits such as day-one releases, online console multiplayer, cloud gaming, and EA Play. Xbox currently offers Ultimate, Premium, Essential, and PC Game Pass. A subscription is access—not permanent ownership—and the games and features available to you depend on your plan, platform, region, and the current catalog.
How Xbox Game Pass works
You choose a plan, pay on a recurring basis, and play eligible games while your subscription is active and each game remains in the catalog. If your subscription expires or you cancel it, you lose subscription access; if a game leaves the catalog, it is no longer included. Xbox says game titles, counts, features, and availability vary over time, by region, plan, and platform. Check the live catalog and plan details for your market before subscribing.
Which Game Pass plan fits your platform?
Xbox’s live US overview, checked October 7, 2026, lists the following catalog counts and features. Counts are undated figures displayed on Xbox’s page, not independent measurements or a dated 2026 study.
| Plan | Where you can play | What Xbox lists |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate | Xbox consoles, PC, and supported devices | 500+ games, day-one games, cloud streaming, EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, online console multiplayer, and other benefits. |
| Premium | Xbox consoles, PC, and supported devices | 200+ games and streaming; new Xbox-published games join the library within one year of launch. |
| Essential | Xbox console and supported devices, as listed by Xbox | 50+ games, online console multiplayer, and in-game benefits. It does not include day-one new releases. |
| PC Game Pass | Windows PC | 300+ PC games, day-one titles, in-game benefits, and EA Play. Xbox lists no cloud gaming for this plan. |
These are the figures and features shown on Xbox’s live US pages on October 7, 2026; availability, catalog size, and plan benefits can change. Compare the current options at Xbox Game Pass before purchasing. There is no universally best tier: choose based on the games you want, the devices you use, and whether you need console multiplayer or cloud access.

Choose for Xbox console
If you play online multiplayer on a console, check that the plan you choose includes online console multiplayer. Xbox lists that benefit with Ultimate and Essential. For day-one releases, Xbox lists Ultimate; Essential does not include them. Check the current comparison for the exact inclusions of each plan.
Choose for Windows PC
PC Game Pass is for Windows PC and uses the Xbox PC app. Xbox lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher as a requirement. Individual games can require more capable hardware or a newer Windows update, so check the game’s listing before installing. Xbox’s PC Game Pass page has current setup details.

Choose for both or for streaming
Some tiers cover console and PC, but that does not mean every included game runs on both. A title must support the platform you plan to use. Cloud play has its own eligible-plan, game, device, and regional requirements; the cloud catalog is not identical to the full Game Pass library.
Playing games on Xbox and PC
On a supported Xbox console, find an included game in the console’s Game Pass experience and install it to play locally. On Windows, browse and launch PC Game Pass titles through the Xbox PC app. Downloaded play and cloud streaming are different: a download runs on your device, while cloud gaming streams a supported game over the internet to a compatible device.

Xbox lists phones and tablets, selected smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Meta VR headsets, and a browser at xbox.com/play among supported cloud options. Device support and regional availability can change. For either local play or streaming, check that the specific game supports your device and that your hardware meets its requirements.
What you need for Xbox Cloud Gaming
Cloud gaming lets you stream supported games instead of installing and running them locally. For subscription games, Xbox lists an eligible Game Pass plan, a supported game and region, a supported device, and a compatible controller as requirements. Controllers can connect by Bluetooth or USB; select games offer Xbox touch controls.

Recurring billing is on by default. Xbox says you can turn it off through your Microsoft account or console. To stop future charges, use the subscription or recurring-billing controls associated with your account and confirm the displayed renewal status. Cancellation and refund terms can vary or change; check the current terms before acting. Xbox’s FAQ says a subscriber charged for recurring billing who cancels within 30 days may request a refund for the most recent recurring charge, limited to one time per Microsoft account per subscription product. That is a conditional policy, not a general guarantee of a refund.
