One character can join multiple factions in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; you are not limited to choosing a single guild or group. The main exceptions are two story allegiance choices: the Imperial Legion or the Stormcloaks in the Civil War, and the Dawnguard or the Volkihar Vampire Clan in the Dawnguard storyline.
How faction membership works in Skyrim
Bethesda says players are not locked to one faction, even though some groups have ongoing feuds. That means you can pursue membership in different organizations on the same character, but it does not mean every faction quest or interaction is guaranteed to be compatible in every circumstance. Bethesda’s July 7, 2025 overview of Skyrim factions supports the general rule.
Examples of joinable factions
- The Companions: A warrior guild based at Jorrvaskr in Whiterun. Bethesda describes the entry quest as beginning with a brawl with Vilkas.
- College of Winterhold: A scholarly faction for characters pursuing magic.
- Dark Brotherhood: An invitation-only organization, rather than a faction with a simple open application.
- Thieves Guild: A group suited to a character interested in evading the law.
- Stormcloaks: A political group seeking Skyrim’s independence from the Empire.
Which faction choices are mutually exclusive?
A community-maintained Skyrim Factions reference identifies two major pairings where the story asks you to choose a side. These are allegiance choices within their respective questlines, not evidence of a general one-faction limit.

How to approach the choice quests
Before choosing a Civil War side
Decide whether your character will support the Imperial Legion or the Stormcloaks. The available sources establish that these are opposing sides; they do not provide a detailed comparison of rewards, builds, or endings.
Before choosing a Dawnguard side
Decide whether to side with the Dawnguard or the Volkihar Vampire Clan in that storyline. This is a separate choice from joining other factions around Skyrim.

What is not established about faction order
The community reference also makes a more specific claim about the order of joining the Companions and Dark Brotherhood. Bethesda’s faction overview does not verify that sequencing claim, so it should not be treated as a confirmed general rule. The supported takeaway is narrower: multiple faction memberships are allowed overall, with the Civil War and Dawnguard pairings as the clearly named side choices.
