Usually, your save can survive the end of a free period, but your right to launch the game may not. A limited trial, temporary subscription access and a game demo can use different rules. Check three separate questions for the exact game: is the save retained, can you still open the game, and will the save transfer to the account or platform you plan to use next?
For example, PlayStation says progress from a limited EA Play trial carries over when you buy that game. Ubisoft says a game becomes unavailable when free termed access ends, while progression is kept only for games that support cloud saves or when you retain the local save files. Those policies are examples, not a universal rule for every title.

People often use “free-to-play period” to describe any temporary access, but the offer type determines what happens next. Identify which of these is ending before you assume your progress is safe.

A limited trial of one game
A trial normally unlocks a specific title for a set amount of time or playtime. The trial may use the same save system as the paid version, but the publisher can still require a purchase before the game will launch again. PlayStation’s EA Play guidance is explicit for its limited trial of the latest EA games: “Yes, after your limited trial of the latest EA games ends, your progress will carry over. Temporary access through a subscription catalog
A catalog subscription grants a license while your membership or a particular catalog entitlement is active. Losing the entitlement can lock the game even though its save remains on your console or in the cloud. Renewal, buying the game separately or restoring the same subscription may be required to resume.
A demo, promotion or event build
Demos and promotional builds can have their own save containers, account restrictions or progress caps. Do not infer that a demo save will load in the full game unless the game’s support documentation says so. The exact title, platform and offer terms are decisive.

- Save retention: Does the local file or cloud record remain after the entitlement expires?
- Game access: Can the game still be launched, or must you buy it or renew the subscription?
- Transfer: Will the same progression load on the edition, platform and account you intend to use?
A “yes” to the first question does not imply a “yes” to the other two. A locked game can still have an intact save, and a save that exists on one account may not be recognized by another account or platform.
What the documented policies say
EA Play limited trials on PlayStation
PlayStation states that progress from a limited EA Play trial carries over if you purchase the game, so you can continue from your existing save rather than restart. The same guidance says you need to purchase the game to continue after the trial ends. This is a title-and-platform policy for that trial arrangement, not proof that every EA title or every platform handles trials identically.
Ubisoft free termed access
Ubisoft’s Free Termed Access terms say that games become unavailable when the free access period expires. They also say saved progression is kept for games that support cloud saves or when you keep your local saved files. In practical terms, the entitlement can disappear while the data remains recoverable, but only if the game’s save method and your file retention meet those conditions.

Ubisoft subscription renewal
The Ubisoft Subscription Terms 2.0 take a more discretionary approach: if you did not buy the game outside the subscription, Ubisoft may, at its sole discretion, save your progression and/or in-game purchases if you later renew. The terms point to a title-specific list, so do not treat future restoration as guaranteed without checking whether your game is covered.

EA Help says EA Play is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, while its page says Core and Standard do not include EA Play. That information identifies which subscription can provide access; it does not establish the save rule for a particular game. Check the game’s own support page before changing plans or platforms. See EA’s Game Pass and EA Play guidance.
Use this checklist before the period expires
- Name the offer precisely. Write down the game, edition, platform, subscription or trial name and the expiry date. “Free” is not enough to identify the applicable rule.
- Open the game’s official support page. Search for save retention, trial progress, cloud saves, entitlement expiry and cross-progression for that exact title. Prefer a page maintained by the publisher or platform holder.
- Confirm the account pair. Note the game account and the platform account currently being used. Resume with those same accounts unless the publisher explicitly documents account linking or migration.
- Verify cloud-save support. If the game supports cloud saves, allow synchronization to complete while you still have access. A cloud icon, sync status or platform backup indicator should show completion before you exit.
- Locate any local save. If the game relies on local files, determine where the platform stores them and avoid deleting or replacing them. Keep the original file until you have successfully resumed after buying or renewing.
- Record the exact version. A console edition, PC edition, remaster or regional release can use a different save format. Confirm that the version you plan to buy or install is covered by the game’s stated policy.
- Choose your access path. Decide whether you will buy the game, renew the same subscription or wait. Retaining a save does not keep the license active.
- Test after access is restored. Launch the game with the same accounts, select the existing profile and check a recent checkpoint or save slot. Do not overwrite the original until the correct progress appears.

Platform and account transfer: where assumptions fail
A save can be perfectly intact yet unusable in the version you install next. Publishers may distinguish between console families, PC storefronts, generations, regional releases and cloud-streamed versions. Unless official guidance confirms cross-progression, assume the save belongs to its original platform and account.

Same platform, same account
This is generally the lowest-risk resume path because it preserves the original save location and identity. Buy or renew the entitlement on the account that created the save, then let the platform synchronize before starting the game.
Different platform
Do not promise yourself a transfer merely because the game has an online account. Cross-save, cross-progression and cross-play are separate features. Look for a statement naming both the source and destination platforms and the data that transfers. If the documentation is silent, keep the original installation and save untouched.
Different account
Changing the console profile, PC account or publisher account can make an existing file invisible. Account linking may also be one-time or irreversible. Resolve account ownership with the publisher before unlinking anything, and do not delete the original profile while testing.

Troubleshooting when progress appears to be gone
The game is locked at the end of the free period
This usually indicates an entitlement problem rather than a deleted save. Confirm that the purchase or renewal used the same platform account, then restore licenses or refresh the subscription according to the platform holder’s support instructions. Do not uninstall the game or delete its saved data while access is being repaired.
The game starts but shows a new profile
Exit without saving over the new profile. Check that you are signed into the original game and platform accounts, that cloud synchronization finished, and that you installed the same edition. If a cloud/local conflict appears, preserve both copies and follow the game’s official recovery procedure.
The save is present locally but not in the cloud
Keep the device containing the local file powered on and connected, then verify the game’s synchronization status. Avoid launching on another device until the upload completes. If the title does not support cloud saves, the local file may be the only retained copy, which is why deleting or replacing it before resuming is risky.
Progress loads on one platform but not another
That result does not prove corruption. It may mean the game has no cross-progression, the accounts are not linked as required, or the editions use incompatible save formats. Consult the title-specific transfer policy and continue using the original platform until eligibility is confirmed.
Buying the game later: a safe resumption sequence
- Verify the product page names the same game, edition and platform as the trial or subscription version.
- Purchase on the account that created the original save.
- Install or unlock the game without removing existing saved data.
- Start the game once, allow cloud synchronization and choose the existing profile or save slot.
- Confirm a recent checkpoint, inventory state or achievement timeline before making a new manual save.
For the PlayStation EA Play trial documented above, this purchase path is the stated way to continue. Other games may require a separate transfer process or may not support continuation at all.
What you can safely conclude
Ending a free period does not automatically erase every save. It commonly removes the license first, leaving progression available if the title supports the relevant cloud or local-save method. The only dependable answer for an unnamed game is therefore conditional: identify the offer, preserve the save, restore access through the same account and verify transfer support for the exact platform version.
