Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →No—not in vanilla Minecraft. The portal-shaped structure in an Ancient City is made of Reinforced Deepslate, and the sources reviewed do not establish any item, recipe, or interaction that activates it. Mods and data packs may add their own behavior, but their instructions depend on the specific add-on and Minecraft version.
What players call the Deep Dark portal
The structure is the large, portal-shaped feature at the center of an Ancient City in the Deep Dark. Mojang’s snapshot notes describe Reinforced Deepslate as a mysterious block found in Ancient Cities and say it cannot be obtained in Survival: Minecraft snapshot 22w13a.
Mojang’s feature article calls the city center a “huge central piece” but does not explain the cities’ history or say that the structure is a working portal. Concept artist Mariana Salimena described the design goal as “Mystery, curiosity, and history”: Meet the Deep Dark. That speaks to the visual design, not to a confirmed portal function.
Why it does not light in vanilla Minecraft
The official material reviewed describes the Deep Dark, Ancient Cities, and Reinforced Deepslate, but does not provide an activation method. A secondary gaming guide likewise says the structure cannot be activated in vanilla Minecraft: Sportskeeda’s Ancient City portal guide. So in an unmodified world, there is no supported way to light or open it.

#1 Best Overall
- Capture the excitement and adventurous play of Minecraft!
- Each 3.25-inch scale Minecraft action figure comes with an accessory to recreate favorite in-game moments!
- Each also includes 1 Redstone Building Piece -- fans can collect the figures and combine all 6 building pieces to build a working TNT Cannon (each sold separately, subject to availability).
- For even more ways to play and display, the pixelated character figures are posable with movable joints!
- The collectible figures make a great toy for video-game players and fans ages 6 years old and up, who will want them all! (Each sold separately, subject to availability.)
Do not waste time trying flint and steel, a Warden drop, or an improvised activation ritual. The available sources support no vanilla procedure using those—or any other item.
What changes with mods or data packs?
A mod or data pack can change Minecraft’s behavior, so an add-on could give the structure a function. There is no universal modded activation method: check the specific add-on’s instructions and the Minecraft version it supports. Do not treat an add-on’s feature as a vanilla mechanic.

Explore the Ancient City safely
The Deep Dark can be dangerous: sculk sensors and shriekers can lead to a Warden encounter. Mojang recommends bringing torches and wool when exploring; these are in-game preparation items, not ingredients for activating the structure. See Mojang’s Deep Dark exploration guidance.
