The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild lets you roam Hyrule freely during the adventure, and you can keep exploring after defeating Calamity Ganon. After the ending, however, the game reportedly returns you to a save from before the final battle rather than leaving Hyrule in a post-Ganon state.
What “free play” means in Breath of the Wild
Free roaming is built into the base game: you can explore Hyrule in the order and at the pace you choose, rather than following a fixed route through every objective. Nintendo describes climbing towers and peaks, using the Sheikah Slate map, riding horses, rafting, shield-surfing and paragliding as ways to travel through the world. Weapons wear out, while food and clothing help Link handle environmental and combat challenges. Nintendo’s game page describes the exploration and traversal options.
Can you keep playing after beating Calamity Ganon?
Player reports describe the game returning to the save made before the final battle after the ending. That save is marked to show that you have completed the story, but Hyrule does not remain in a changed state with Ganon defeated. You can continue from that point, finish activities you left undone and choose to fight Ganon again. Nintendo’s cited product pages do not document this save behavior, so it is best understood as the reported way the game handles its ending. Player discussion of continuing after the final battle.
What can you do in the base game?
You can leave the main story aside and explore, take on challenges, or pursue unfinished objectives. The central point is that free roaming does not depend on beating Ganon or buying add-on content: it is part of the main game. Your progress toward the ending and the activities you choose to pursue are separate decisions.

What optional content adds
The Expansion Pass adds challenges and story material; it is not a separate mode required for free roaming. Nintendo’s UK listing describes two DLC packs and three treasure chests:
- Pack 1: Trial of the Sword, Hero’s Path, Master Mode, a travel medallion and hidden items. Nintendo says Trial of the Sword has 45 rooms and Hero’s Path can track about 200 hours of movement. These figures describe those specific features, not the game’s total length.
- Pack 2, The Champions’ Ballad: the Divine Beast Tamer’s Trial, additional shrines, a large dungeon, story material about the Champions and Zelda, and the Master Cycle Zero. Nintendo says you must complete the four main challenges to free the Divine Beasts before playing this content.

Are amiibo needed to explore?
No. Amiibo are optional extras, not a requirement for free play. Nintendo says some compatible figures can provide in-game items, and the Wolf Link amiibo can summon an ally. Availability and compatibility depend on the amiibo; neither function is needed to roam Hyrule. Nintendo notes that amiibo are sold separately on its UK product page.
