Yes, but only in a limited sense. Xbox supports connecting a Steam account to an Xbox/Microsoft profile for social features and, in some games, account-based cross-platform services. The connection does not merge your Xbox and Steam accounts, combine storefront libraries, or transfer purchases. Whether saves, progression, DLC or multiplayer access carry over is decided by each game and its publisher.
What “linking Xbox and Steam” can mean
Players commonly use the word link for three different relationships. Keeping them separate prevents most account and purchase misunderstandings.
Social linking
The Xbox app for Windows has a Link accounts feature that includes Steam. This can help with finding friends, viewing online activity or using Xbox social features while playing on PC. Game-specific account linking
A Steam game may ask you to sign in with an Xbox/Microsoft account, or with the publisher’s own account, and associate your Steam identity with that profile. Games that use a cross-platform identity can then provide features such as shared progression. Microsoft’s PlayFab documentation describes this model, but it does not apply to every title: PlayFab account-linking guidance.

Storefront ownership
Your Steam license, Xbox console license, Microsoft Store license and PC Game Pass access are separate entitlements. Linking accounts does not merge them. Microsoft also says personal Microsoft accounts cannot be merged or combined, and purchases, balances, gamertags and game progress cannot be transferred between Microsoft accounts: Microsoft account-combination policy.
How to link Steam to your Xbox profile
The Xbox app’s labels can change by version, region and account state, so treat this as the usual route rather than a guaranteed menu sequence. The current Xbox app listing specifies Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or higher.
- Install or update the Xbox app for Windows.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that contains the intended Xbox gamertag, saves and entitlements.
- Open your profile or account settings.
- Choose Link accounts, Linked social accounts or the equivalent social-account option.
- Select Steam.
- Complete authorization in the official Steam sign-in window.
- Confirm that the displayed Steam account is the one you intended to connect.
The Xbox app can also aggregate or display games installed through other PC storefronts. That view is for discovery and launching; it is not a merged ownership library. If the option is absent, the game or account may require linking elsewhere, or the app may be outdated.
How game-level linking works on Steam
Many games do not use the Xbox app for linking. Instead, the connection appears at first launch or in the publisher’s account portal.

- Launch the game’s Steam version.
- Choose its Xbox/Microsoft sign-in, account-link or publisher-account option.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account belonging to the Xbox profile you actually want.
- Approve the Steam-to-Xbox or publisher-account association.
- Restart the game if the expected profile or entitlements do not appear immediately.
Before approving, check every account name carefully. Some publishers restrict unlinking, relinking or the number of Steam accounts that can be attached, and a first-time association can become the identity the game expects thereafter.
What transfers between Xbox and Steam?
There is no universal Xbox-to-Steam transfer. The following reflects the usual position; a game’s own support documentation is the final authority.

Is Xbox Game Pass the same as Steam?
No. PC Game Pass is a Microsoft-account subscription delivered through the Xbox ecosystem on compatible Windows devices. Steam is a separate storefront and account system. The Xbox app may show a game installed from Steam, but that does not turn the installation into a Game Pass entitlement or make a Game Pass license a Steam license.
A title can be included in Game Pass and also sold on Steam, but you must use the version and entitlement belonging to the storefront you chose. A Game Pass subscription is not required merely to link accounts. Does linking enable cross-play or cross-save?
Not automatically. These are independent game features:
- A game may support Xbox-to-Steam cross-play but keep saves separate.
- It may support cross-save without allowing cross-play.
- It may support both, or neither.

Can an Xbox purchase be played through Steam?
Usually not by linking alone. You generally need the Steam version or a publisher system that explicitly grants access across versions. The same applies in reverse: a Steam purchase does not normally unlock the Xbox console or Microsoft Store edition. Never treat the Xbox app’s aggregated game view as proof that you own another storefront’s license.

- Exit the game and stop playing on the newly displayed or empty profile.
- Write down the Xbox gamertag, Microsoft account, Steam account and any publisher account involved.
- Read the game’s official account-management instructions before unlinking anything.
- Do not repeatedly unlink and relink; some systems preserve the original association or impose cooldowns and limits.
- Contact the game publisher first for missing saves, progression, DLC or profile problems.
- Contact Xbox or Steam support for sign-in, security or platform-account issues.
Microsoft’s account policy does not provide a general way to merge profiles, and PlayFab’s guidance notes that a stale cross-platform identity can keep a game attached to the wrong account.

The link option is missing
- The title may not support Xbox linking, or may offer it only in-game or on the publisher’s website.
- The Xbox app may need updating.
- You may be signed into a different Microsoft account than the one containing your gamertag.
- Menu availability can differ by app version, region and account type.
My Steam game does not appear in the Xbox app
The app’s aggregated view is not an ownership database. Confirm that the game is installed and that the app recognizes that storefront installation. A missing entry does not transfer or invalidate the Steam license.
My Xbox save is missing on Steam
The game may not support cross-progression, or the Steam build may require a separate publisher account. App-level social linking cannot create shared saves where the game has not implemented them.
Authorization fails or the wrong profile keeps returning
Close the game, verify which Microsoft and Steam accounts are active in their official clients or browsers, then follow the publisher’s account-realignment procedure. Avoid third-party “linking” tools and do not create a replacement profile until support confirms that it is safe.

Security checklist
- Authenticate only on official Xbox, Microsoft, Steam or publisher domains.
- Never give your Steam password to another person or an unsolicited “support agent.”
- Use Steam Guard and secure the email account attached to Steam.
- Check the account name before approving every link.
- Ignore unofficial pages promising instant account merges or transferred purchases.

What if I only want to use an Xbox controller on Steam?
You do not need to link Xbox and Steam accounts to use an Xbox controller with Steam. Controller compatibility and account linking are separate issues.

Do not assume so. The game or publisher may limit how many Steam identities can be connected and whether a link can be changed.

Can I unlink Xbox and Steam later?
