Verdict: The GeForce RTX 2070 remains a capable 1080p card and an adjustable-settings 1440p card, but it is only a sensible purchase when the used price is roughly $140–$170 in the US. At more than $200, newer hardware—particularly the RTX 4060—usually offers better efficiency, ray tracing, features and ownership risk. This 2025-focused assessment uses August 2026 used-market data for the price context.
RTX 2070 at a glance
NVIDIA launched the RTX 2070 as a high-end mainstream Turing GPU. It introduced hardware ray tracing and Tensor cores to a broader market than the RTX 2080, and it remains useful because of its CUDA support, NVENC encoder and DLSS Super Resolution compatibility.

Gaming performance in modern titles
There is no honest single FPS figure for an RTX 2070. Results change with the game engine, CPU, memory, driver, preset, upscaling and whether ray tracing is enabled. Older reviews such as TechSpot’s RTX 2070 testing and Tom’s Hardware’s Founders Edition review establish launch-era positioning, but 2018 workloads do not represent every 2025 game.

| Use case | Practical expectation |
|---|---|
| 1080p esports | High-refresh gameplay is often realistic, subject to the game and CPU. |
| 1080p modern AAA rasterization | Generally viable at high settings; demanding games may need reduced shadows or textures. |
| 1440p rasterization | Usually playable at medium/high settings, but not consistently at maximum settings in the newest releases. |
| 1440p ray tracing | Often requires reduced RT settings and DLSS; heavy implementations can feel uncomfortable. |
| 4K | Normally requires aggressive upscaling and reduced settings. |
| Path tracing | Not a realistic native-performance target. |
1080p
This is the RTX 2070’s strongest role. Rasterized games, competitive titles and older DirectX 11 releases can make good use of its performance. In newer AAA games, high rather than ultra settings are the sensible starting point, particularly for shadows, volumetric effects and textures.
1440p
QHD remains possible, but it is now an adjustable-settings experience rather than an ultra preset guarantee. Lowering a few expensive options, using DLSS Quality where available and monitoring 1% lows produces a better result than chasing a maximum preset.
4K and demanding effects
The card’s 448GB/s bandwidth does not make it a practical modern 4K card. Native 4K and heavy ray tracing can overwhelm its compute and memory headroom; reduced resolution or upscaling is essential.
Ray tracing, DLSS and feature support
DLSS Super Resolution
The RTX 2070 has Tensor cores and supports DLSS Super Resolution in compatible games. NVIDIA’s RTX and DLSS documentation lists supported games and applications. DLSS is game-specific, not a universal driver switch. Quality mode is a reasonable 1080p or 1440p starting point, while performance modes can look softer or show more artifacts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrame generation
Do not buy an RTX 2070 expecting the same Frame Generation feature set associated with RTX 40- and RTX 50-series cards. The card supports the earlier DLSS upscaling technology, but it should not be marketed as a DLSS 3 or DLSS 4 Frame Generation product.
Ray tracing
Dedicated RT cores let the RTX 2070 render ray-traced reflections, shadows and lighting. That is a real advantage over GTX-era cards, but modern RT workloads are much heavier than launch-era demos. Selective RT settings plus DLSS can work; full RT or path tracing often creates an unattractive performance trade-off.

Streaming and creator work
The dedicated NVENC encoder makes the card useful for game streaming and recording without relying entirely on the CPU. CUDA-compatible creative applications also benefit. However, encoder capabilities and efficiency are not identical to newer NVIDIA generations, and 8GB of VRAM limits large scenes, high-resolution projects and many AI workloads.
Is 8GB of VRAM enough?
Eight gigabytes is workable, not future-proof. At 1080p it remains adequate for many games. At 1440p, high rather than ultra textures are often the practical choice. Ultra texture packs, large open worlds, mods and ray tracing can exhaust the allocation.

- VRAM limitation: texture quality or asset streaming must be reduced to avoid stutter, hitching, missing assets or crashes.
A game can show acceptable average FPS while still suffering from VRAM pressure and poor frame pacing. Browsers, recording software and AI tools can also compete for memory, so leave headroom rather than treating all 8GB as available to the game.
RTX 2070 versus newer and related cards
RTX 4060
The RTX 4060 launched at a $299 starting price in 2023, according to NVIDIA’s announcement. A US used-market tracker listed an August 2, 2026 average of $283 and a fair asking range of $267–$293 (market data).
Its Ada Lovelace design brings substantially better performance per watt, newer ray-tracing hardware and access to newer frame-generation features. It is the better choice for a new build, lower electricity use, quieter operation or longer feature life. The RTX 2070 remains attractive only when the roughly $100–$120 saving matters and the card is tested.
Do not assume the RTX 4060 wins every rasterized comparison. Independent TechSpot and Tom’s Hardware testing shows that Radeon alternatives can be competitive in non-RT workloads. Compare the games and software you actually use.

RTX 2070 Super
The RTX 2070 Super is a different GPU, generally faster and potentially different in power, cooling and price. Marketplace listings often blur the names. Verify the exact model with a GPU-Z screenshot, board model, CUDA-core count, memory specification and power connectors. Never use Super benchmark results to describe the original RTX 2070.
AMD alternatives
AMD’s current product range is listed on its Radeon graphics page. Radeon cards may offer stronger rasterized value or more VRAM at a similar price, while NVIDIA generally retains advantages for ray tracing, CUDA software and the DLSS ecosystem. Check encoder requirements, game mix, power draw and application compatibility before choosing.

A tracker based on 137 US eBay listings reported a $171 RTX 2070 average and a $161–$179 fair asking range, updated August 2, 2026 (source). Completed sales around $159.89–$170 are more useful than inflated active listings: $159.89, $160 and $170. Prices vary by model, shipping, tax, seller protection and return terms.
| Price | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Under $150 | Compelling if fully tested and returnable. |
| $150–$170 | Generally fair for a clean, working card. |
| $170–$190 | Condition, cooler, warranty and accessories must justify the premium. |
| Above $200 | Usually skip for newer hardware, unless a special compact model or transferable warranty solves a specific need. |
Some Newegg marketplace listings appeared around $223.99–$269.99 (listing page), which is weak value against completed sales and the tracked fair range.
Compatibility, power and thermals
NVIDIA rates the reference board at 175W and recommends a 550W system supply. A quality 550W unit is preferable to a cheap higher-wattage model; older supplies may have degraded capacitors or unsuitable cabling. Partner cards can draw more power, use different connectors and occupy two or more slots.
- Check the exact card’s connector arrangement and length before buying.
- Confirm case clearance, especially for triple-fan models.
- Blower coolers can suit compact cases but are usually louder.
- Inspect hotspot temperature as well as average GPU temperature.
- Dust, worn fan bearings and dried thermal paste are common used-card concerns.
Used-buying checklist
- Identify the GPU: Confirm it is the original RTX 2070, not a 2070 Super or ambiguous OEM listing.
- Inspect the card: Look for corrosion, burn marks, bent brackets, damaged connectors, missing screws and oil residue.
- Request evidence: Ask for GPU-Z plus a recent benchmark showing temperature, hotspot, clocks and fan behavior.
- Verify outputs: Test the DisplayPort and HDMI ports you need for flicker, artifacts and signal drops.
- Test immediately: Install the current NVIDIA driver, run a repeatable benchmark and play several games before the return window closes.
- Keep protection: Do not finalize a marketplace transaction until stock-clock stability, temperatures and noise are acceptable.
Who should buy the RTX 2070?
Good fit
- A budget-conscious 1080p upgrader moving from a GTX 10-series or older Radeon.
- An entry-level 1440p player comfortable lowering settings or using DLSS.
- A streamer who benefits from NVENC and finds a tested card near $150–$170.
- A small-form-factor builder who specifically needs a compact model at a sensible price.
Skip it
- Anyone paying over $200 without exceptional warranty or form-factor value.
- Buyers seeking long-term 1440p ultra performance or serious path tracing.
- New premium builds where efficiency, noise and modern features matter.
- Anyone unable to obtain a functional test or meaningful return option.
Final verdict
The RTX 2070 is still usable, but its value is almost entirely price-driven. At $140–$170, it is a reasonable used 1080p and entry-level 1440p card with DLSS, hardware ray tracing and NVENC. At $170–$190, inspect the model and condition carefully. Above $200, choose newer hardware—most often an RTX 4060 or a well-priced Radeon alternative—unless the older card offers a specific compactness or warranty advantage.
