A USB drive is central to the Bad Update software-mod process described in the current Bytes N Bits V1.3 guide, but it is not the whole setup: the console must meet the guide’s software requirements, and the reported method also uses specific files and a game save. Compatibility is not universal, and the exploit must be run again after shutdown or a crash.
What the USB drive does—and what else you need
Bytes N Bits describes the USB drive as storage for Bad Update’s exploit files and homebrew apps; the drive can stay connected while the exploit is used. Its author gives a 64 GB stick as an example, not as a stated minimum or a requirement for every setup. Choose capacity based on the files and apps you intend to store rather than treating that example as a universal specification. Bytes N Bits’ Bad Update V1.3 guide is dated 29 August 2026.

The guide also describes a game-save trigger. In its V1.3 instructions, the route uses Rock Band Blitz files and a game save. The USB drive is therefore one part of a setup that also depends on the right console software, the correct files, and the game-related route supported by the guide.
Check the console’s dashboard and the current instructions
The V1.3 guide says its described setup needs dashboard version 17559 and advises checking the project repository if a console has a higher dashboard. Treat that as the guide’s stated compatibility condition, not a verified universal rule for every Xbox 360 or every release of Bad Update. The available sources do not establish a complete, current compatibility list by console revision or dashboard version.

Before preparing files, compare the console’s dashboard and hardware details with the project’s current documentation. If those details are not explicitly supported there, do not assume that the V1.3 steps—or the game route described in another article—will work on that console.
Which game route applies?
Bad Update’s reported entry route has changed over time, so instructions from different dates should not be mixed casually:

Those accounts describe different points in the project’s history. They do not establish that each game option works with every Bad Update release. Check the current project instructions for the specific release before relying on a particular game or save method. Gizmodo’s 2025 overview provides the earlier account.

Bad Update versus an RGH hardware modification
The sources describe Bad Update as a software route that avoids opening the console for a hardware modification. RGH is the hardware-modification alternative; the available accounts do not supply enough detail for a full comparison of compatibility, reliability, or technical difficulty.

Expect to rerun the exploit after power-off
Bad Update is not persistent across shutdowns in the reported setup. Bytes N Bits says to run it again after the console is powered off or crashes; Gizmodo likewise reports that it must be rerun after the console is turned off. Plan on repeating the software step when needed rather than treating the initial run as a permanent modification.

The V1.3 guide recommends backing up console-specific data after the first boot, including NAND-related files. Follow the current project’s instructions for identifying and storing those files, and keep the backup somewhere other than the USB drive being used for the process. The recommendation is consequential: do not skip it or substitute guessed steps if you are unsure how the backup applies to your console.
