Which platforms support Stardew Valley mods?
The Stardew Valley modding guide distinguishes supported computer and mobile versions from console editions:

The guide names Switch, PS4, and Xbox One; it does not separately enumerate later PlayStation or Xbox generations. Its documented setup therefore does not establish mod support for those newer console editions either.
Why Xbox app instructions do not mean Xbox console mods
Stardew Valley’s Windows installation instructions include a procedure for the Xbox app. That procedure applies to the game installed through the Xbox app on a Windows PC. It does not provide a way to install mods on an Xbox console.

How modding works on supported platforms
On a supported installation, SMAPI is the mod loader. The guide’s basic process is to install SMAPI, then unzip each mod into its own folder inside the game’s Mods folder. Check whether each mod works with your game version: SMAPI checks compatibility and may disable incompatible SMAPI mods. These steps do not make the standard Switch, PlayStation, or Xbox console editions moddable.
The guide says mod-related save corruption is extremely rare, recommends occasional save backups, and notes that SMAPI creates a daily backup. That is a precaution for supported modding, not a guarantee that every mod is risk-free.

Is console mod support coming?
In a January 7, 2026 statement reported by GamesRadar+, Stardew Valley creator Eric Barone (ConcernedApe) said: “If it was simple to do, I wouldn’t be opposed. But I don’t think it would be possible, for numerous reasons.” That is a dated comment, not an announcement that console mods will never be possible.
Console versions do receive updates, but that is separate from mod support. ConcernedApe’s February 12, 2025 patch announcement described version 1.6.15.1 as addressing console issues and syncing console content with the latest PC content. The post said the Switch patch was available February 26, 2025; it did not announce console mod support.

Where to play if you want mods
Choose a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer for the platforms the guide marks fully supported, or Android if the mods you want are available there. For portable play, the guide lists Steam Deck under supported Linux/PC modding, while cautioning that modding may increase power use. It is a handheld PC, not a console edition with a separate mod system.
