Yes—but PC play means running the original PlayStation 3 version of Demon’s Souls in the RPCS3 emulator, not playing the 2020 PlayStation 5 remake on PC. RPCS3 supports Xbox/XInput and PlayStation controllers through configurable handlers, and its compatibility list marks the listed PS3 game entries “Playable.” That status does not guarantee the same results on every PC or emulator build.
Which version of Demon’s Souls can you play on PC?
RPCS3 emulates the original PS3 release. It is not a PC version of the 2020 remake, which is a PS5 title. The RPCS3 compatibility list shows the listed original-game entries as “Playable,” with records dated May 4, 2020, and December 3, 2022. Check the RPCS3 compatibility list for the current entry and status; a database classification is not a promise of identical performance across hardware or builds.
How do you set up a controller in RPCS3?
Connect the controller to your PC, then open RPCS3’s gamepad settings and select the handler that matches it. Check the selected device and bindings before launching the game. The handler names and operating-system details are covered in RPCS3’s controller configuration guide.
Xbox or another XInput-compatible controller
- Connect the controller to the PC.
- In RPCS3’s gamepad settings, select the XInput handler.
- Confirm that RPCS3 has selected the intended controller and review its bindings.
RPCS3 describes Xbox and third-party XInput-compatible controllers as widely supported on PC and generally usable without extra tools. Expect Xbox-style button labels rather than PlayStation symbols. RPCS3’s guide also says XInput does not provide motion controls or pressure-sensitive buttons.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.

DualShock 4
RPCS3’s guide says the DualShock 4 can use its dedicated handler on Windows over USB or Bluetooth without extra setup. If DS4Windows, ScpToolkit, or similar remapping software is running, disable it when using RPCS3’s dedicated handler; such tools can interfere with detection or input. On Linux, device permissions and a udev rule may be needed, so follow the guide’s current instructions for your distribution and device.
DualSense
RPCS3’s guide says the DualSense generally follows the same PC-use notes as the DualShock 4. Do not assume that connecting it enables Adaptive Triggers or HD vibration in RPCS3: the guide says RPCS3 and other PC software do not currently use those features.

DualShock 3
RPCS3 provides a dedicated DualShock 3 handler. Windows setup depends on the driver and operating system; the RPCS3 guide describes options including DsHidMini and Sony’s driver. For DsHidMini, its v3 FAQ recommends SXS mode paired with RPCS3’s DualShock 3 handler. Use the current project documentation for your controller and system rather than relying on old forum instructions.
Which controller should you choose?
| Controller route | Setup and compatibility notes | Labels and input features |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox or XInput-compatible | Choose XInput in RPCS3; third-party XInput devices are described as widely supported and generally need no additional tools. | Xbox-style labels; no motion controls or pressure-sensitive buttons via XInput. |
| DualShock 4 | Dedicated RPCS3 handler; Windows USB or Bluetooth is described as working without extra setup. Linux may require permissions and a udev rule. | PlayStation-style controller and handler. |
| DualSense | Generally follows the DualShock 4 PC-use guidance in RPCS3’s guide. | Do not expect Adaptive Triggers or HD vibration support in RPCS3. |
| DualShock 3 | Dedicated handler; Windows driver approach depends on system. DsHidMini’s FAQ recommends SXS mode with the RPCS3 handler. | PlayStation controller; use current driver and emulator documentation. |
There is no single best choice for every setup. If you already own a supported controller, try it first; buying a new one is not a prerequisite implied by RPCS3’s controller guidance. Choose based on handler support, setup effort, preferred button labels, and whether you need motion or pressure-sensitive input.

What if RPCS3 does not detect the controller?
- In gamepad settings, confirm that the selected handler matches the controller type and that the right device is selected.
- For a DualShock 4 using RPCS3’s dedicated handler, disable DS4Windows, ScpToolkit, or similar software that may compete for input.
- On Linux, check the current RPCS3 guide for device permissions and udev-rule requirements.
- For a DualShock 3, verify that the driver and mode match the current RPCS3 and DsHidMini documentation.
- Recheck the handler guide if your controller revision or operating system differs from the documented setup; support can depend on those details.
Sony’s PlayStation gaming on PC support page notes that controller support can vary by game even when a DualSense is connected to a PC. That guidance concerns PlayStation games on PC; for the PS3 original running in RPCS3, use RPCS3’s handler-specific documentation.
