Can You Play Factorio From Floppy Disks? How the Setup Works

A custom filesystem lets Factorio data span thousands of floppy disks, but one reader and manual swaps make the reported full load take about a week.

Yes—but it is a storage experiment, not a cluster of computers running Factorio. In a January 13, 2026 report, Hackaday described creator DocJade’s setup: thousands of floppy disks, one reader and a custom filesystem. Hackaday says loading all of Factorio this way takes about a week, with manual disk changes—not just the disks’ transfer rate—limiting access.

What “floppy disk cluster” means here

The term can suggest multiple computers sharing processing work. That is not the arrangement Hackaday describes. The project stores game data across thousands of floppy disks and reads it through a single reader. Its challenge is making that scattered storage behave enough like a usable filesystem for the game to access.

Hackaday’s report is the available account of the project; its linked creator video could not be independently inspected. The reported design and timing below should therefore be understood as Hackaday’s description, not as independently verified testing.

How the disk store works

A custom filesystem maps data to disks

Rather than using a RAID array, the setup uses a custom filesystem mounted through FUSE. A dedicated disk stores pool information, helping the system track where files are located and reducing disk changes. The filesystem can split one file across multiple disks, so a file need not fit on a single floppy.

Hackaday describes the filesystem as loosely POSIX-compatible, but says it omits features such as permissions and links. The report does not identify the filesystem implementation or repository, the exact disk format or capacity, or the reader model.

Someone still has to change the disks

When requested data is on another disk, the user is prompted to insert it. With one reader, access depends on having the right disk available; the required manual swaps are a central bottleneck for both reading and writing. The setup is therefore better understood as a slow, human-assisted game-data store than as fast storage that happens to use unusual media.

Why Factorio can work—and why many games might not

Hackaday says Factorio loads most of its game data into memory at launch. That behavior helps make the floppy setup workable: after the lengthy initial loading, the game has much of what it needs in memory rather than continually requesting assets from disks.

Games that dynamically load textures, world maps or other chunks during play are a poorer fit. If a needed chunk cannot be made available promptly, the game may crash. That is a compatibility issue, not simply a matter of accepting slower loading screens: an application that expects timely random access may fail when its data is waiting on a disk swap.

How long does loading take?

Hackaday reported that loading all of Factorio from this setup takes “about a week.” This is an approximate project figure from its January 13, 2026 report, not a benchmark independently verified here. The same report describes the store only as “thousands of disks”; it does not give an exact count.

The week-long figure illustrates the difference between making a game’s files available in principle and using them conveniently. A single disk reader, scattered files and manual media changes mean that the process is governed by how quickly the needed disks can be supplied, not just by nominal floppy transfer speed.

What the project demonstrates

  • A custom filesystem can present data spread over many removable disks as a mounted store, including files split across disks.
  • One reader and repeated manual swaps make access extremely slow and dependent on user intervention.
  • Software that loads most of its data at startup is a more plausible fit than software that needs assets on demand during play.

It is an inventive demonstration of storage and compatibility, not evidence that floppy disks are a practical alternative to modern game storage. The report does not provide enough detail to reproduce the build exactly: among other things, the disk format, precise disk count, drive model and filesystem code are unspecified.
