To keep the app available but filter some videos, turn on Restricted Mode in YouTube’s settings. These are separate controls: Restricted Mode is a filter, not a guarantee that all unsuitable content will be hidden.
Choose whether to block YouTube or filter its videos

Block the YouTube app with Nintendo parental controls
- On the Switch, open System Settings.
- Select Parental Controls, then Parental Controls Settings.
- Choose a restriction level. In Nintendo’s North American instructions, Child and Pre-Teen lock YouTube; Teen and Not Restricted leave it accessible.
If you want to block YouTube without changing other restrictions, choose Custom Settings and restrict the relevant software. The available labels and rating rules can vary by region, so check the options shown on your console.
Use YouTube Restricted Mode to filter videos
- Open the YouTube app on the Switch.
- Open Settings inside the app.
- Enable Restricted Mode.
Nintendo Support says Restricted Mode hides videos that may contain inappropriate content, based on user flags and other signals. It can reduce exposure to some videos, but should not be treated as a complete content block.

Know how region and shared-console settings affect the choice
Nintendo’s North American support pages describe preset levels as Child, Pre-Teen, Teen, and Not Restricted. Nintendo’s Japanese instructions instead describe age-rating categories: because YouTube has no rating in that system, Nintendo says to restrict software rated for ages 12 and up to prevent YouTube from launching. That broader rating restriction can also affect other software in the same group; the Japanese instructions describe an exception mechanism for selected software. Do not assume those Japanese rating labels or thresholds match the options on consoles in other regions.
Nintendo’s parental-controls settings apply at the console level rather than providing different restriction settings for each user. If children share a Switch, Nintendo’s Japanese support guidance advises setting restrictions for the youngest child. The parental-controls smartphone app is an optional way for a guardian with a Nintendo Account to manage settings; the documented app-blocking path is also available directly on the console. Nintendo says the Switch does not include a general-purpose internet browser for freely viewing websites. These steps address access to the YouTube app and filtering within YouTube, rather than general web browsing. See Nintendo’s parental-controls overview.
