Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Yes—much of Final Fantasy XIV’s main scenario can be played without queuing with other players. The Duty Support system fills certain progression dungeons with NPC companions, allowing you to enter those instances without a matchmaking party. It is not a universal solo mode: support is limited to the duties on Square Enix’s current list, and trials, raids, and other activities can use different party requirements.
For any quest, the decisive check is the duty’s entry in the official Duty Support manual. If the instance is listed there, you can use NPCs; if it is not, follow the party rules shown in the normal duty listing.

What “solo” means in Final Fantasy XIV
In this context, solo play means progressing through supported content without other human players in your party. You still control one character, but Duty Support supplies the required companions as NPCs. Square Enix describes it this way: “The Duty Support system allows you to bring certain NPCs with you into instanced dungeons required to progress without queuing with other players.”

Duty Support is a duty-by-duty feature, not a switch that makes every activity in the game playable alone. A dungeon may offer NPC support while a nearby trial or raid may still be designed for a full player group.

The official manual’s list currently covers main-scenario dungeons from A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood, Shadowbringers, Endwalker, and Dawntrail. It also includes a small number of optional sidequest dungeons. Coverage therefore extends through the major story arcs, but the list—not the expansion name or quest category—is what determines whether a particular instance can be entered with NPCs.
This is useful if you are avoiding a queue, learning the game at your own pace, or simply uncomfortable making mistakes in front of strangers. You can complete a supported dungeon with the game’s characters instead of relying on a matched party. The system does not, however, establish that NPC runs are faster, easier, or more rewarding than runs with other players; Square Enix’s documentation does not provide those comparisons.
How to enter a dungeon with NPC companions
You can open Duty Support in two places: the Duty Support option in the Duty menu, or the entrance to a supported duty. Applicable entrances display a special icon. The process is short, but the interface still requires you to select the duty and register before entering.
- Open the Duty menu. Choose Duty Support, or interact with the entrance of a dungeon that shows the Duty Support icon.
- Select the duty. The menu displays the supported instance and the NPC party associated with it. If the duty is not present, the manual does not identify it as Duty Support content.
- Review the party. Some duties let you switch among available NPCs. A Realm Reborn instanced dungeons use preset NPC party members, so those companions cannot be changed.
- Register. Confirm the selected duty and party. This is the NPC equivalent of registering for the instance rather than joining a queue of other players.
- Commence the duty. Once registration is complete, enter the dungeon and proceed through its story objectives using the normal in-instance interface.
The exact NPC roster is therefore part of the duty’s design. Do not assume that every dungeon offers the same selection controls: the manual specifically distinguishes changeable rosters from the preset parties used in A Realm Reborn.
How much of the main story is covered?
Duty Support is built around progression dungeons, so it covers a substantial portion of the mandatory dungeon path through the game’s expansions. The official list identifies supported main-scenario dungeons in each of these story eras:

| Story era | What the official list establishes |
|---|---|
| A Realm Reborn | Supported main-scenario dungeons; NPC parties are preset and cannot be changed. |
| Heavensward | Supported main-scenario dungeons, with the specific duties shown in the current manual. |
| Stormblood | Supported main-scenario dungeons, with the specific duties shown in the current manual. |
| Shadowbringers | Supported main-scenario dungeons, with the specific duties shown in the current manual. |
| Endwalker | Supported main-scenario dungeons, with the specific duties shown in the current manual. |
| Dawntrail | Supported main-scenario dungeons, including additions documented in later patch notes. |
| Optional sidequests | A small number of optional dungeons are supported; optional status alone does not guarantee inclusion. |
The table describes the scope of the system, not a promise that every dungeon from an expansion is covered. Quest text can send you to several kinds of duties, and the current manual is the practical authority for an individual instance. Check the list when you reach a new dungeon instead of assuming that a story label means NPC access.
New Duty Support additions in Patch 7.5
Square Enix’s Patch 7.5 notes, updated May 11, 2026, added three more dungeons to Duty Support:

- Shisui of the Violet Tides from Stormblood
- The Clyteum from Dawntrail
The patch documentation also describes The Clyteum as a four-player dungeon that can be entered with Trust or Duty Support NPCs. That wording is a reminder that the game may refer to related NPC-entry systems by different names, while the duty’s own listing tells you which option is available.
Because support is updated through patches, an older guide can be incomplete even if its general explanation is correct. For the current status of a specific dungeon, compare the in-game entry with Square Enix’s live supported-duty list and the latest patch notes.
Which duties still involve other players?
Not every story-adjacent activity is a dungeon. Trials and raids are separate duty types, and current patch notes provide clear examples of content built around larger parties.

Eight-player trials
Patch 7.5 identifies The Unmaking as an eight-player trial. Its stated group size is evidence that it is designed for a player party of that scale; it is not evidence that all trials share exactly the same entry rules. Check the individual duty entry for the instance you need.
Eight-player raids and 24-player alliance raids
The same notes list Windurst: The Third Walk as an eight-player party or a 24-player alliance. Patch 7.4 separately lists Hell on Rails as an eight-player trial and AAC Heavyweight Tier as an eight-player raid. These examples show why “the main story” is not a sufficient solo test: a quest can lead to content whose intended structure is a trial, raid, or alliance raid rather than a four-player dungeon.
NPC support remains duty-specific
Patch 7.4 describes Mistwake as enterable with Trust or Duty Support NPCs while listing the larger group duties above separately. The practical rule is simple: NPC availability belongs to the individual duty, not to the entire expansion, patch, or quest chain.
Duty Support versus a normal matched party
The official material establishes one direct comparison: who fills the party. It does not establish universal differences in clear time, difficulty, reward rates, or NPC combat performance, so those should not be treated as guaranteed advantages or disadvantages.
| Question | Duty Support | Normal matchmaking |
|---|---|---|
| Who joins the party? | NPC companions supplied through Duty Support. | Other players found through the game’s matchmaking system. |
| How do you start? | Select Duty Support from the Duty menu or a supported entrance, choose the duty and party, register, then commence. | Use the normal duty registration and queue process shown for that instance. |
| Can you choose companions? | Depends on the duty. A Realm Reborn dungeon rosters are preset; some duties allow switching available NPCs. | You do not select named NPC companions; the system matches players according to the duty’s party structure. |
| Clear time, difficulty, rewards | Not established as universally faster, easier, or more rewarding by the cited official documentation. | Not established as universally faster, easier, or more rewarding by the cited official documentation. |
For a player worried about delaying strangers, the meaningful difference is control over the party’s human membership. Duty Support removes the need to queue with other players for supported dungeons. It does not remove the dungeon’s mechanics or change a duty into an unrestricted exploration mode.

A practical solo-story routine
Use this routine whenever the main scenario sends you to an instance:
- Identify the duty type. Read the duty name and whether it is labeled dungeon, trial, raid, or alliance raid.
- Check Duty Support. Open the Duty menu and look for the entry, or inspect the entrance for the special icon.
- Confirm the exact patch-era entry. If a guide says a dungeon was unsupported, it may predate an addition such as the Patch 7.5 support for The Dusk Vigil, Shisui of the Violet Tides, or The Clyteum.
- Review the available NPCs. Note whether the party is fixed or whether the interface lets you switch companions.
- Register and commence. After selecting the duty and party, start the instance through Duty Support.
- Recheck when the quest changes activity type. A dungeon completed with NPCs does not imply that the next trial or raid will offer the same option.
This approach prevents the two most common mistaken assumptions: that every story duty is soloable, and that an unsupported duty is missing because the player used the wrong menu.

Verify the duty name
Story quests can mention an area, objective, or encounter that is not the formal duty name. Use the instance’s actual entry in the Duty menu or at its entrance, then compare that name with the official list.
Check whether it is a trial or raid
If the activity is labeled as a trial, raid, or alliance raid, do not infer dungeon-style NPC support from the surrounding quest. The examples in Patches 7.4 and 7.5 demonstrate that these categories can have eight-player or 24-player structures.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Common questions from players who prefer to avoid strangers
Do I have to run every dungeon with strangers?
No. For a dungeon listed in Duty Support, NPCs can fill the party so you do not queue with other players. Dungeons outside the list and other duty types may follow different rules.
What if I make mistakes and bother other players?
Duty Support is specifically useful for supported progression dungeons when you want to practice or learn without a human party. It does not make every duty private, so check the listing before entering.
Can I choose which NPCs accompany me?
Sometimes. The manual says some duties allow players to switch available NPCs, while A Realm Reborn instanced dungeons use preset parties that cannot be changed.
Does “solo” include every main-scenario boss?
No. The supported list concerns specific duties, principally progression dungeons. Trials and raids can specify eight-player parties or a 24-player alliance, as shown in current patch documentation.
Where to verify changes
Use the official sources rather than relying on an old expansion guide:
- Square Enix: Duty Support | Game Manual — supported duties, access instructions, and NPC-selection rules.
- Square Enix: Patch 7.5 Notes — the additions of The Dusk Vigil, Shisui of the Violet Tides, and The Clyteum, plus current examples of larger duties.
- Square Enix: Patch 7.4 Notes — Mistwake NPC entry and examples of trial and raid group sizes.
In short, Final Fantasy XIV supports a largely solo-friendly main-story route through NPC-assisted dungeons, but it does not turn the entire game into a solo campaign. Check the exact duty, use Duty Support when it is listed, and expect separate party requirements when the story moves into trials, raids, or alliance content.
