Mega Evolution is a temporary transformation for eligible Pokémon in Pokémon GO. It lasts eight hours, improves battle performance, and activates bonuses tied to that individual Pokémon’s Mega Level. The first activation requires species-specific Mega Energy; later activations become cheaper, and eventually free after the Pokémon’s rest period. Only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon can be active for a Trainer at a time.
What Mega Evolution changes
Mega Evolution temporarily changes an eligible Pokémon into its Mega form. The transformation affects both combat and resource rewards, but it does not permanently replace the Pokémon’s ordinary form. When the eight-hour timer expires, the Pokémon returns to normal automatically.

The transformation belongs to one Pokémon, not to your entire collection of that species. Its Mega Level, rest timer and reduced future cost are tracked separately for each individual Pokémon. Two Pokémon of the same species can therefore have different activation costs, levels and bonus values.
How long it lasts
A Mega Evolution remains active for eight hours. The timer continues to run while you are away from the game. When it ends, the Pokémon reverts to its regular form; its Mega Level does not reset.

Only one can be active
You can have only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon active at a time. Mega Evolving a second Pokémon before the first timer ends immediately returns the first one to its regular form. The two transformations do not overlap, so plan which species will provide the most useful battle or catching bonus before you activate anything.
Where the option appears
On an eligible Pokémon’s summary screen, the Mega Evolve button appears when you meet the requirements. You can also activate Mega Evolution from a Raid Battle Lobby or while selecting a GO Battle League Battle Party. The game only displays the option for species and individual Pokémon that qualify, so a missing button usually means that the Pokémon is ineligible or a prerequisite has not been met.
Mega Energy: what it costs and how to get it
Mega Energy is tied to a species. Energy for one species cannot be spent on another, and the exact amount needed varies by species and by that individual Pokémon’s Mega history. The first Mega Evolution normally has the highest cost.
Ways to earn Mega Energy
- Mega Raids: A successful Mega Raid awards Mega Energy for the raid boss’s species. You receive the energy even if you do not catch the boss afterward. The Pokémon Company’s guide gives a range of 150 to 250 Mega Energy, with the amount determined by how quickly the raid boss is defeated.
- Field Research and Timed Research: Some tasks award species-specific Mega Energy when completed.
- Other game activities: Pokémon GO periodically provides additional ways to obtain Mega Energy. Availability can change with events and updates, so check the current task descriptions and event details in the app.
Because Mega Energy is species-specific, check the species name on a reward before deciding whether it advances the Pokémon you intend to use. A large balance for one Mega species does not reduce the cost of another.
Initial activation versus later activations
The first activation for an individual Pokémon consumes its full initial requirement. After that first transformation, the same Pokémon develops a lower recurring cost. Once its rest period ends, you can Mega Evolve it again without spending energy. If you need it before the rest period finishes, the game offers a reduced-energy activation instead.

Repeated Mega Evolutions raise that Pokémon’s Mega Level. Higher levels shorten the rest period and reduce the amount of energy needed for an early reuse. The exact schedule is species-specific, so use the Mega information shown on that Pokémon’s details screen rather than applying another species’ numbers.
Rest periods and reduced-cost reuse
After a Pokémon’s first Mega Evolution, it must rest before it can transform for free again. You can wait for the timer or pay a reduced amount of Mega Energy to activate it sooner. Mega Level progression makes both choices more favorable by shortening the wait and lowering the early-reuse cost.
Mega Beedrill example
The official Pokémon.com guide uses Mega Beedrill to illustrate how the progression works. These figures are an example for Beedrill, not a universal schedule for every species:

The table describes the guide’s worked example only. Other species can have different rest periods and energy values, and the game can change requirements in later updates.
Mega Levels and Super Max Level
Mega Levels are permanent progression for an individual Pokémon. Each time you Mega Evolve that Pokémon, it moves closer to the next level. When the eight-hour transformation ends, the level remains; you do not lose progress by allowing the form to expire.

Levels can improve several benefits, including the rest period, the reduced activation cost and rewards from catching Pokémon. The game presents the exact level information on the individual Pokémon’s Mega details screen.

The current Pokémon GO Help Center describes a further Super Max Level. Unlocking it requires Mega Energy even when the Pokémon reached the preceding level without a separate unlock payment. Not every Mega Pokémon can currently reach Super Max Level. Treat the level shown in the app as authoritative for that species and that individual, because availability and requirements can change.
Raid and battle bonuses
Attack boost for allies
When your Mega-Evolved Pokémon is participating in a raid, Pokémon belonging to other Trainers receive an attack boost. Attacks that match the Mega Pokémon’s type receive an additional boost. This makes a type-matched Mega especially valuable when a group is using attacks that exploit the raid boss’s weakness.
Boosts from multiple active Mega-Evolved Pokémon do not add together. If more than one Mega is present in the battle, the game uses the highest applicable boost rather than stacking every boost. Choosing the strongest or best type match is therefore more useful than simply adding another Mega to the lobby.
Where Mega Pokémon can fight
- They can participate in raids.
- They can battle at Gyms.
- They can fight Team GO Rocket encounters.
- They can be used in battles with friends.
- They generally cannot be used in GO Battle League, except in special cups or events that explicitly allow them.
- They cannot be assigned as Gym defenders.
The last restriction is important: Mega Evolution is an active battle and catching tool, not a way to leave a permanently transformed defender at a Gym.

Catching bonuses and Mega Levels
An active Mega Pokémon gives extra Candy when you catch Pokémon that share a type with it. For example, a Mega whose type matches the Pokémon you are hunting can increase the Candy earned from those catches during the eight-hour window.
Higher Mega Levels can add further rewards, including extra catch XP and a greater chance of receiving Candy XL. The Pokémon.com guide’s Mega Beedrill example lists the following values:

These are Beedrill example values from that guide, not guaranteed universal numbers for every Mega species. Check the current Mega Level details for the Pokémon you plan to use before relying on a particular XP or Candy XL figure.
How to Mega Evolve a Pokémon
- Choose the activity. Decide whether the transformation is for a raid, a Gym or Rocket battle, friend battle, or a planned catching session. Because the form lasts eight hours and only one can be active, the timing matters.
- Select an eligible Pokémon. Open your Pokémon storage and choose the individual whose type, moves and Mega Level fit the activity. Confirm that its summary screen displays the Mega option.
- Check the Mega details. Review the species-specific energy requirement, current Mega Level, rest status and available bonuses. This screen is also where you can see whether a special prerequisite is missing.
- Tap “Mega Evolve.” Confirm the energy payment when prompted. The transformation starts immediately and the eight-hour duration begins.
- Use the active window deliberately. Enter the raid or battle while the Mega is active, or begin a same-type catching route. If you activate another Pokémon, the first transformation ends.
You can perform the same activation from a Raid Battle Lobby or while choosing a GO Battle League Battle Party. The game will show the cost and eligibility before you confirm.

Special cases: alternate forms and prerequisites
Charizard X and Charizard Y
Some species have more than one Mega form. Charizard can become Mega Charizard X or Mega Charizard Y. The reduced future cost applies only to the form you selected first. Unlocking one form does not reduce the initial cost of the other; the other form requires its own full first activation before its recurring cost can decrease.

Rayquaza and Dragon Ascent
Rayquaza has an additional requirement. Before Mega Evolving it, you must obtain a Meteorite and use that item to teach Rayquaza the move Dragon Ascent. The Help Center says Meteorites can come from Special Research. A Charge TM or Elite Charge TM cannot teach Dragon Ascent, so those items cannot substitute for the Meteorite requirement.
Eligibility can change
The roster of Mega-eligible Pokémon, available Mega Levels, exact costs and bonus values are not fixed across every game version or event. If a species does not show the Mega icon or the activation button, consult the current in-game details rather than relying on an older list.
When to spend energy: a practical decision framework
Activate before a raid when the type match matters
For a raid group, prioritize a Mega that boosts the attacks your team is actually using. A Mega that shares a type with those attacks supplies the additional matching-type boost, while a poorly matched Mega may provide less useful support. Activate shortly before the raid so the eight-hour period is not wasted while you are offline.

Activate before a focused catching session
If you are hunting one species or one type, start the Mega shortly before the route, event hour or research session. The same-type Candy bonus applies to catches during the active period, and a higher Mega Level can improve XP and Candy XL outcomes.
Wait when the free reuse is close
If the Pokémon’s rest timer is nearly complete and you do not need it immediately, waiting preserves Mega Energy. Use the reduced activation cost when the upcoming raid or catching opportunity is more valuable than the energy you would save by waiting.
Compare the individual Pokémon, not just the species
When you own multiple candidates, compare their Mega Levels, current rest timers, energy costs, moves and type relevance. A higher-level individual may be the better choice even if another Pokémon has slightly better ordinary combat statistics, because its shorter rest and stronger bonuses can matter over repeated sessions.
Common problems and how to resolve them
- The Mega button is missing: Confirm that the species is eligible, that you selected the correct form, and that any special requirement—such as Rayquaza’s Dragon Ascent—is complete.
- You do not have enough energy: Earn species-specific Mega Energy through Mega Raids, research tasks or currently available activities. Energy for another species will not help.
- The cost is higher than expected: You may be attempting the individual’s first activation, or you may be activating a different form such as Charizard X versus Charizard Y. First activations and first activations of alternate forms use the full requirement.
- The Pokémon cannot transform for free yet: Its rest period has not ended. Wait for the timer or use the reduced-energy option for early reuse.
- Your previous Mega disappeared: Activating another Mega ends the first one immediately. Only one active transformation is allowed.
- You cannot place it in a Gym: Mega Pokémon are not eligible to remain as Gym defenders, even though they can fight in Gym battles.
- The bonus does not match an older guide: Species values, Mega Level availability and event rules can change. Use the current details screen for the individual Pokémon.
What to verify in the current game
Official Pokémon GO guidance establishes the core rules: an eight-hour duration, one active Mega at a time, species-specific energy, permanent Mega Level progress and lower future costs after the first use. Exact species values remain volatile. Before spending energy, open the Pokémon’s Mega information and verify the current initial cost, reduced cost, rest period, maximum available level, form and any prerequisites.
