Yes—GTA 5 Story Mode generally works without an ongoing internet connection, but offline access depends on how you set up the game. On PC, plan to sign in, update the game and launcher, and launch the game online before going offline; periodic entitlement checks can mean reconnecting later. GTA Online requires an internet connection.
What works offline—and what does not?
Rockstar Games Customer Support says that Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection. That is different from GTA Online, which is an online mode. An offline Story Mode session also does not make internet-dependent functions available: Rockstar notes that Online play, cloud-save synchronization, and game updates may require reconnecting. Rockstar’s offline-play guidance was last updated May 1, 2024.

How to prepare GTA 5 for offline play on PC
Rockstar’s documented procedure is for the Rockstar Games Launcher. Prepare while you have a working internet connection; offline mode is not a promise that a fresh PC installation can be activated without going online.
- Connect to the internet and sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Update the launcher and Grand Theft Auto V.
- Launch GTA 5 through the launcher while online at least once.
- In the launcher, open Settings, select Grand Theft Auto V, and add
-scofflineonlyunder Launch Arguments. - Select Play or start the game from your preferred launcher.
These steps follow Rockstar’s GTAV PC offline instructions and its offline-mode guidance after launcher installation. To return to Online play, cloud synchronization, or updates, reconnect, remove the launch argument, and relaunch.

Why PC offline access may stop working
Rockstar’s PC requirements say internet access is required for activation and periodic entitlement verification, as well as online play. The company’s entitlement FAQ says that after you connect and verify your entitlement, you can play offline again. It does not specify a fixed offline duration, so do not treat offline access as permanent.
If the launcher cannot sign in offline or GTA 5 reports Error Code 133, Rockstar’s troubleshooting guidance points to a prior online launch and verification on that computer. Reconnect and launch the game to restore verification. Rockstar also says launcher offline sign-in requires that the account was previously signed in on that machine with Remember me enabled while online and Rockstar services were available.

How console offline play differs
Rockstar says a Rockstar Games account is not required to play Story Mode on console, although some online features do require an account. That account rule does not establish whether every console edition—physical or digital—can be installed, patched, or set up without internet. Check the requirements for your specific console and edition before relying on a completely offline setup.

Rockstar’s PC system requirements, updated December 10, 2025, list internet access for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. The requirements page does not turn that into a guarantee of uninterrupted offline access.
