No. Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition does not run on the original Nintendo 3DS. It requires a system from the New Nintendo 3DS family. Nintendo’s listing says the game is “Only playable on the New Nintendo 3DS series.”
Which Nintendo 3DS systems can play it?
The game’s title is Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition, and the “New” identifies the compatible hardware family. It works on New Nintendo 3DS-series systems, not the earlier models. Nintendo’s official game listing specifies the New Nintendo 3DS series; Nintendo’s software compatibility guidance says New Nintendo 3DS software cannot be used on older systems.

Can you still buy the game digitally?
Nintendo ended purchases in the Nintendo 3DS eShop on March 27, 2023, as stated on its eShop FAQ. A compatible console alone therefore does not mean you can newly purchase the game digitally. If you are considering a used console or copy, confirm exactly what is included; Nintendo’s information does not establish current second-hand stock or that a particular console listing includes the game.
