Yes. Minecraft Realms is optional: friends can play through a live Bedrock world, a local-area network (LAN), or an online server. The right option depends on whether you share a network, which Minecraft edition you use, and whether the host needs the world to stay available when they are offline.
Ways to play Minecraft together without Realms
| Option | Edition and connection | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Join a friend’s world | Bedrock over the internet | A quick session hosted by a friend | The host and joining friend must both be online and friends in Minecraft. Minecraft Help |
| LAN world | Bedrock or Java on the same local network | Playing together at home or on one shared network | The host must start the world, and everyone must be on the same network. Bedrock LAN guidance; Java LAN guidance |
| Online server | Java server for Java players; Bedrock server for Bedrock players | Internet play through a server address | Players must use a compatible edition and game version. Self-hosting can require computer and network setup. Minecraft Help; official server software |
| Realms | Edition-specific subscription | A private cloud world for invited players | It is a paid option, not a requirement for multiplayer. Minecraft Realms |
Join a friend’s Bedrock world online
This is the simplest no-Realms option if the host is available to play. Both players need to be friends in Minecraft and online at the same time. The host starts an online world; the other player selects Play, opens the Friends tab, and joins the friend’s world when it appears as joinable. The world is only available while the host is playing. Play over LAN
LAN works when everyone is connected to the same local network, such as the same home network. It does not provide a way for friends elsewhere on the internet to join.
Bedrock
- Connect each device to the same network and make sure players are using a current game version on supported devices.
- On the host’s world settings, turn on Multiplayer Game and Visible to LAN Players, then start the world.
- Other players open Worlds and select the LAN world when it appears.
Java
- The host loads or creates a world and opens the in-game menu.
- Select Open to LAN, choose the available settings, and start the LAN world.
- Other players on the same network join through the multiplayer screen.
Join or host an online server
Java players can join an existing Java server without subscribing to Realms. In Minecraft, select Multiplayer, then use an existing server entry, Direct Connection, or Add Server and enter the server address. The server and players’ game versions need to be compatible. - Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
You can also run your own server. Minecraft provides Java and Bedrock server software at no download cost. Hosting still requires a capable computer; Java needs a compatible Java runtime, and Bedrock’s dedicated server supports specified Windows or Linux versions. To let people connect from outside your local network, you may need network or firewall configuration. The exact setup depends on your operating system and network, so check the official requirements before configuring a server. Minecraft server downloads and requirements

Check edition and platform requirements first
- Match editions. Java and Bedrock are separate multiplayer ecosystems. A Java player generally needs a Java server or world; a Bedrock player needs Bedrock. Check each player’s edition before choosing a connection method. Minecraft multiplayer guidance
- Check console subscriptions. Online multiplayer on consoles may require the platform’s own subscription: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. That requirement is separate from a Minecraft Realms subscription. Minecraft multiplayer requirements
- Review child account permissions. Multiplayer access may need to be enabled in the child account’s settings. Minecraft account guidance
Which option should you choose?
- Choose a Bedrock friend world for a quick online session when the host can stay in the game.
- Choose LAN when everyone is on one local network and wants to play directly from the host’s world.
- Choose an online server for internet play through a server address, especially if the group needs a world that is not tied to a friend’s live Bedrock session.
- Choose Realms only if its private cloud-world convenience suits your group; it is not the only way to play together.
