Yes. You can play modern games without owning a console by installing them on a capable PC, streaming supported games from a cloud service, or streaming from a gaming PC you already own. The right route depends on the games you want, your devices and internet connection, and whether you need offline play.
Choose how you want the games to run
| Route | Where the game runs | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local PC gaming | Your own computer | A PC that meets each game’s requirements, plus the game or subscription | Offline play where supported, higher performance, or responsive competitive play |
| Cloud gaming | A service provider’s remote hardware | A supported game, compatible device, available region, suitable internet, and often a subscription | Playing on a device that cannot run the game locally |
| Remote play | Your own gaming PC | A gaming PC that can run the game, plus a remote-play device and network connection | Using a phone, TV, or another computer as a screen for your PC |
Play games locally on a PC
A Windows PC can run downloaded games from storefronts such as Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG, as well as through Xbox. The game uses your computer’s processor, graphics hardware, memory, and storage, so check the requirements for each title rather than assuming any laptop will be sufficient. Microsoft’s Windows PC gaming guide explains the basic distinction: installing games uses the PC’s hardware and can support offline access where the game permits it, while streaming can let you start without waiting for an installation.

Local play is a practical choice if you want to play offline, need consistent responsiveness, or want the PC itself to provide the graphics performance. The trade-off is the up-front cost of suitable hardware, along with any game purchases or subscriptions.

Cloud gaming runs the game on remote hardware and sends the picture and sound to your device; your controls travel back over the internet. That means you may not need a gaming PC, but the service must support the particular game, device, and region you plan to use. Network stability and latency also matter: a fast connection alone does not guarantee a responsive experience.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox Cloud Gaming offers selected games on supported devices that include Windows PCs, phones, tablets, select smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, and some VR headsets. Availability varies by game, region, plan, and platform. Most games require an eligible Game Pass plan and a compatible controller; some titles offer touch controls or other input options. Xbox lists selected free-to-play games that can be played with a free Microsoft account.
On the US cloud-gaming page accessed October 11, 2026, Xbox listed monthly cloud-playtime allowances of five hours for Essential, ten for Premium, and fifteen for Ultimate. These plan details can change and may differ by region. Xbox also says PC Game Pass does not include Xbox Cloud Gaming, so check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming page for plan eligibility and limits before subscribing.

GeForce NOW
GeForce NOW streams a supported catalog of PC games; it does not provide access to every PC game. You need access to the game through a connected store or subscription, and the specific title must be available on the service. NVIDIA lists computers, phones, tablets, smart TVs, Fire TV devices, and gaming handhelds among supported device categories.

NVIDIA’s requirements vary with device and streaming quality. For several device categories, its guidance lists 15 Mbps for HD at up to 60 frames per second and 25 Mbps for Full HD at 60 frames per second. NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and specifies latency below 80 ms to a data center. Those are service requirements, not promises of a particular image quality or lag-free play at your location. Review the current GeForce NOW requirements for your device and target quality.

Stream from a gaming PC you own
Steam Remote Play sends video and audio from a game running on your gaming PC to another device and sends your input back to that PC. You can use a phone, TV, or another computer as a remote screen, but the host computer must still be turned on and capable of running the game. This is different from cloud gaming: the provider is not supplying the computer that runs your game.

- Game availability: Confirm that the exact games you want are playable through your chosen store or streaming catalog.
- Device and region: Check that the service supports both your device and your location. A device category being supported does not mean every model or region is covered.
- Connection: Consider stability and latency as well as download speed. If possible, test the service on the network and device where you plan to play.
- Offline needs: Installed PC games can work offline when the specific game allows it. Cloud gaming and remote play require a connection to the remote system.
- Plan and total cost: Compare the required subscription, any game purchases, and—if playing locally—the cost of a PC powerful enough for your games.
- Controls and display: Check whether your device needs a controller, whether the game supports touch or another input method, and whether the screen is comfortable for play.
For a setup that can run demanding games without a console, start with local PC requirements. If your device is not powerful enough, check cloud catalogs and compatibility for the games you want. If you already own a gaming PC, remote play can extend it to other screens without shifting the hardware requirement to a cloud provider.
