Some Xbox 360 consoles can now use a software-based modification that remains in place after a reboot—but the method is limited to specific motherboard revisions and carries a risk of data loss or a console that will not boot. The project is called Xbox360PeerPressure; it does not work on every Xbox 360, and it is different from the older, temporary Bad Update exploit.
What does “software-modded” mean here?
Xbox360PeerPressure describes a persistent softmod for compatible Xbox 360 hardware. Its documentation says the setup modifies the console’s NAND image and hard-drive security sectors. “Persistent” distinguishes it from an exploit that must be triggered again after a reboot; it does not mean the method is risk-free or works on every console.

The timing makes the news notable: the Xbox 360 launched in 2005, so 2025 marked 20 years since launch. That anniversary is context, not evidence that Peer Pressure was released on the anniversary itself. Xbox 360 launch history

Which Xbox 360 models can be softmodded?
Peer Pressure lists five supported motherboard revisions: Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper, and Trinity. It excludes Corona and Winchester, citing a hardware-level fix in the southbridge. Check the motherboard revision rather than relying on the console’s retail name or appearance; the project’s documentation is the source for its compatibility list. Xbox360PeerPressure documentation

Why does the method require a hard drive?
The exploit depends on a timing-sensitive race while reading the hard drive’s security sectors. The project requires a hard drive and recommends a mechanical 2.5-inch drive; it says some SSDs may work, but does not recommend them. A general “2.5 inch SATA hard drive for Xbox 360” search is not a guarantee of fit or compatibility: verify the connector, physical fit, and your console revision against the project instructions before choosing a drive. How does Peer Pressure compare with Bad Update?
| Method | Persistence | Compatibility stated by the project | Documented trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox360PeerPressure | Presented as persistent | Xenon, Zephyr, Falcon, Jasper, and Trinity; Corona and Winchester are excluded | Modifies NAND and HDD security sectors; data loss or a console that will not boot is possible |
| Bad Update | Not persistent; must be triggered again after reboot or power-off | Dashboard 17559 | Its author describes it as a proof of concept, not an RGH replacement |
These are claims in the projects’ own documentation, not independent testing. Bad Update’s documentation also states a 30% success rate and an exploit time of up to 20 minutes; those figures apply to Bad Update, not Peer Pressure. Bad Update project documentation

What are the risks before attempting it?
Peer Pressure warns that modifying NAND and HDD security sectors can cause data loss or prevent the console from booting. Recovery may require a hardware NAND flasher. Treat this as a console modification, not a routine software setting: read the project’s current instructions in full and make sure you understand the recovery implications before proceeding. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat is established—and what is not?
The project documentation establishes a persistent-mod claim for listed motherboard revisions, a hard-drive requirement, and risks tied to changes to NAND and HDD security data. The evidence cited here does not establish an exact Peer Pressure release date or its current release/version status. Check the project repository for the latest compatibility and instructions before making any decision.
