Yes—but “playing alone” can mean different things. You can often enter matchmaking without friends, but still play with or against other people. Some games offer AI opponents or a mode designed for solo entry; private matches and offline play have separate rules. The answer depends on the game, mode, and platform.
What does “playing multiplayer alone” mean?
There are three distinct ways to play without bringing friends along:
- Solo queue: You join matchmaking by yourself. The game may place you in a team with strangers or match you against other people.
- Play with or against AI: A mode uses bots or other computer-controlled characters. This may be a full bot match or a mix of human players and bots.
- Play without other participants: You start a private or offline session by yourself. Not every game or mode permits this, and a private match may require other players to join before it can start.
Can you solo queue into a multiplayer game?
Often, yes. Solo queue means you enter matchmaking alone; it does not mean the match will be a single-player experience. For example, Nintendo’s Splatoon 3 guide says Regular Battle searches for other players and begins when eight players have joined. A player can queue alone, but the resulting match includes other people.
Nintendo also lists Anarchy Battle (Open) and Salmon Run as modes that can be played alone online. Salmon Run supports one to four players fighting waves of enemies. Whether you are matched with other people or face only AI depends on the particular mode’s rules.

Can you play multiplayer games against bots?
Some games offer AI opponents, but bot access can vary by game mode and map. Steam Support notes that some Valve games support AI bots, but not all maps do.
EA’s Apex Legends beginner guide identifies Bot Royale as an option. In EA’s Apex Legends mode guide, Bot Royale may add bot squads when there are not enough similarly ranked human players; bots cannot join your squad in that mode. That is bot-assisted matchmaking, not a guarantee that every match is entirely AI-controlled.

Can you start a private match by yourself?
Do not assume that a private or custom lobby can launch with one player. In Splatoon 3, Nintendo describes Private Battle as a room that one player creates for others to join. Bungie’s Destiny 2 guide describes private matches as hosted Crucible lobbies. Those descriptions establish how the lobbies are set up, not that they support a one-person match.

- Participants: Does the mode use human players, bots, or a mix? Are bots opponents only, or can they join your team?
- Private-match minimum: Can a lobby start with one person, or must other players join?
- Offline play and progression: Does the mode work without an online connection, and do its progress or rewards count? Check these separately; rules vary by title.
- Platform and online access: Confirm that the mode is available on your platform and check any online-service, subscription, password, or player-eligibility requirements. Microsoft’s session access-control documentation describes restrictions such as passwords and player or skill requirements.
If you name the game and platform, its official mode or support page is the best place to verify the current rules. Matchmaking behavior, online requirements, and mode availability can change.
