Nintendo warns that some games may not start, may have in-game issues, or may need original Switch Joy-Con. Check the current listing for the exact game before you buy a Switch 2 for your library or purchase a Switch game specifically to play on it.
How Nintendo Switch game compatibility works
Switch 2 supports compatible Nintendo Switch software, but its hardware differs from the original console. That means “backward compatible” does not guarantee that every game will behave exactly as it did on Switch. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance explains the broad rules; its title-level compatibility information (check Nintendo’s current page for your region) identifies reported game-specific limitations.

Nintendo’s UK guidance says: “While future testing and updates may increase the number of supported titles, some games may take longer to become playable, may experience partial functionality issues, or may not be supported.” Treat a compatibility listing as a current status rather than a permanent guarantee: Nintendo says testing and updates may change support, and its European materials include issues under investigation as well as problems addressed by updates.
Check the exact game before relying on it
Look up the individual title in Nintendo’s current compatibility information before buying a console or game on the assumption that it will work. The listing distinguishes games that do not start or progress from games that start but have problems during play, and may note when an issue has been addressed. Check the region and game edition relevant to your copy; a general claim about Switch compatibility is not a substitute for a title-specific status.

Nintendo directs questions about third-party games to the publisher. If the listing does not answer a particular question about a game, the publisher is the appropriate place to ask.
Physical games, digital games, and saves are separate
| What you have | How it works on Switch 2 |
|---|---|
| Physical Nintendo Switch game card | Insert the card, provided the game is compatible. A card’s presence does not establish that the title has no limitations. |
| Digital Nintendo Switch game | Compatible digital software is available through the Nintendo Account linked to the console. |
| Save data and other console data | Moving game access does not itself move all data. Use Nintendo’s separate Switch-to-Switch 2 transfer instructions and check what transfers before starting. |
Nintendo’s support guidance covers access to compatible games, while the system-transfer guide describes migration. Not all data transfers, and some transfer methods delete data from the source console. Read the current instructions carefully, particularly if multiple users or save data are involved.

Some games need original Switch Joy-Con
Nintendo identifies games that cannot be played using the Joy-Con 2 included with Switch 2. Such titles may require original Switch Joy-Con—for example, where a game depends on the original controller’s features or physical setup. Nintendo also notes that the Labo Toy-Con kits are affected by Switch 2’s different size or shape, so do not assume the original Labo experience will carry over.
Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the console. They also need a Switch console or a compatible charging grip or stand to charge. Check the game’s listing and controller requirements before you depend on them.

Old microSD cards do not store Switch 2 game data
Switch 2 is designed to use microSD Express cards for game data. A microSD card used in the original Switch is not compatible for storing Switch 2 game data. Nintendo says an older Switch microSD card can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch; that media use does not make the card suitable for Switch 2 game storage.
Compatibility is not the same as a Switch 2 upgrade
Some Switch games have optional free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance when played on Switch 2. Those enhancements are separate from basic compatibility and do not apply to every compatible game. Check Nintendo’s information for the specific title to see whether an update or upgrade exists and whether it is free or paid.
