Yes. You can play Nintendo Switch Sports offline in local play on a single console, either by yourself against computer opponents or with other players on that console. Choose “Play Locally” in Nintendo’s U.S. support wording; the Japan menu calls the option “Play with Nearby People.” You do not need an internet connection or a Nintendo Switch Online membership for this mode.
Which mode works without internet?
Select local play on one console. Nintendo lists all eight sports in this membership-free mode; the number of players varies by sport, up to four. Golf and Basketball require the game’s free software update.

A solo player can compete against computer opponents. For same-console multiplayer, the game may require additional Joy-Con controllers depending on the sport and how many people are playing.
How the modes compare
| Mode | Internet | Nintendo Switch Online membership | Players and notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play Locally / Play with Nearby People on one console | Not required | Not required | One to four players depending on sport; solo play is against computer opponents. |
| Play Globally trial | Required | Not required for the trial | Single-player trial competition against computer opponents. |
| Play Globally online / play with friends online | Required | Required | Online play requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, according to Nintendo. |
| LAN Play across consoles | Nintendo describes a wired local network setup; whether every configuration works with internet service disconnected is not established | Not stated by the cited Nintendo LAN instructions | Nintendo’s U.S. instructions allow up to four consoles and eight players total, with the sport determining the limit. This is not local wireless play. |
Why the free online trial still needs internet
“Play Globally” is an online mode. Nintendo offers a membership-free trial in which a player can compete against computer opponents, but the trial still requires an internet connection. It is not the offline option; use local play when you need the game to work without connectivity.

Can nearby consoles connect wirelessly?
No. Nintendo Switch Sports does not support local wireless communication between nearby consoles. Nintendo documents LAN Play separately as a wired network setup: its U.S. instructions allow up to four consoles and up to eight players in total, depending on the sport. Because Nintendo’s cited instructions do not establish that every LAN setup works with internet service disconnected, do not treat LAN Play as a confirmed internet-free alternative.
Controllers and other hardware you need
- The game requires compatible Joy-Con controllers and does not support Handheld Mode.
- A solo player does not need extra controllers if they already have a compatible controller. Same-console multiplayer can require additional Joy-Con, depending on the sport and player count.
- The Leg Strap is optional for some Soccer gameplay. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap.
How to start playing offline
- Launch Nintendo Switch Sports on your console.
- Choose “Play Locally” (the U.S. support label) or “Play with Nearby People” (the Japan menu wording). This is the one-console local mode; it does not connect to nearby consoles.
- Choose a sport and the available player setup. For Golf or Basketball, install the free software update if it is not already installed.
You do not need to buy a Nintendo Switch Online membership for local offline play.
