Check PlayStation Network status first, then work through the free, reversible steps below. The paths differ between PS5 and PS4, and no single step guarantees a faster download.
1. Check PlayStation service status
Before changing console or router settings, check the PlayStation Network Service Status page. If the relevant service has an alert, PlayStation advises waiting until service is restored and trying the download again. Status can change, so check the live page rather than assuming there is an outage.
2. Restart a download that will not start
If the download is queued or appears not to begin, try pausing and resuming it. If that does not work, cancel and delete the stalled download entry, then find the game in your Library and start the download again. This removes the download entry, not your saved games.

3. Make sure there is enough free storage
A download can fail or stop if the console does not have the required free space. Check the game’s stated requirement and the console’s available storage before retrying.
- PS5: In Game Library, select the game, open the more menu, and choose View Product to check required space. Check available capacity under Settings > Storage.
- PS4: In PlayStation Store, select the game and review Details for the minimum required free space. Check available capacity under Settings > Storage.
Free enough space to meet the game’s stated requirement, then retry the download. PlayStation’s error-code index associates PS4 error CE-37704-1 with a download canceled because there is not enough HDD space; the code-specific guidance is available in the PlayStation error-code index.

4. Test the console’s internet connection
Run the built-in connection test to check whether the console can connect to the internet. A successful test does not establish that the Store’s servers, your internet provider, or local Wi-Fi conditions are the cause of a particular slow download, but it helps identify a console connection problem.
- PS5: Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
- PS4: Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
If you are troubleshooting PS5 error CE-107928-7, PlayStation’s specific error guidance also recommends checking network settings and resetting them if necessary. It advises turning off the modem and/or router, waiting five minutes, then turning it back on. That advice is tied to this error’s troubleshooting steps; a router restart is not a guaranteed fix for every slow download.

When a wired test may help
If Wi-Fi seems unstable and you can connect the console to the router, try Ethernet as a diagnostic. PlayStation suggests testing a wired connection where possible in its game launch troubleshooting guidance. It is optional: you do not need to buy a cable just to follow the Store download steps, and a wired connection will not resolve a PlayStation service interruption.
5. Check for system software updates
Make sure the console is running current system software, then retry the download. PlayStation’s system software update troubleshooting for PS5 and PS4 also includes testing the internet connection and restarting the console. If the download problem continues, follow the update guide for your console model rather than applying steps intended for the other system.

6. Use Safe Mode recovery only if simpler checks fail
If the service, queue, storage, connection, and software checks have not helped, PlayStation’s download troubleshooting guide recommends a model-specific Safe Mode recovery:
- PS5: Start the console in Safe Mode and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- PS4: Start the console in Safe Mode and select Rebuild Database.
Follow PlayStation’s current download troubleshooting instructions and Safe Mode directions for your model. The option names are not interchangeable: PS5 includes Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, while the stated PS4 download step is Rebuild Database.

7. Use the error code to choose the next step
If an error code appears, look up that exact code in PlayStation Support and follow its instructions. Different codes point to different failure types, so one generic fix should not be applied to every download problem.
- PS5 CE-107928-7: PlayStation identifies this as an error that stopped a game download. Its steps include deleting and retrying the download, testing the connection, checking or resetting network settings, and restarting the modem/router with a five-minute wait.
- PS4 CE-36244-9: PlayStation says the download was suspended and the downloaded content is likely corrupted. Its guidance includes restarting the PS4 and download; if the problem recurs, checking local network settings, trying another network if available, or waiting if the connection is temporarily busy. Storage and system-initialization steps appear in the persistent-error guidance; do not initialize the console casually.
For persistent errors, use the relevant code-specific PlayStation Support page and provide the exact code and console model when contacting support. The official guidance does not determine whether a particular ISP, local interference, or current service condition is responsible.
