Can You Play Pokémon X and Y on Nintendo Switch?

The original Pokémon X and Y are 3DS games, not Switch games. Here’s what you need to play them and what Pokémon HOME can—and cannot—do.

No. The original Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are Nintendo 3DS games, and Nintendo Switch cannot play 3DS cartridges or digital games. To play either original, you need compatible Nintendo 3DS-family hardware and a copy of the game.

Why Pokémon X and Y do not work on Switch

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y launched for the Nintendo 3DS family on October 12, 2013. Nintendo identifies them as 3DS games. The Switch does not support backward compatibility with physical or digital games designed for older consoles, so a 3DS cartridge will not run in a Switch, and a 3DS digital purchase cannot be played on it either. Nintendo’s Pokémon X listing and Pokémon Y listing identify the platform; Nintendo’s backward-compatibility support page explains the Switch limitation.

How to play the original games

Use compatible Nintendo 3DS-family hardware and an authentic copy of Pokémon X or Pokémon Y. Nintendo ended purchases for the 3DS family eShop on March 27, 2023, so buying the game digitally from that store is no longer an option. If buying a used cartridge, check its condition, region, and listing details before purchase.

Nintendo says online play and other functions that use online communication for Nintendo 3DS-family software ended on April 8, 2024. The games remain playable on compatible hardware, but do not expect their former online features to work. See Nintendo’s support information for Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

What to do if you only own a Switch

If you want to play Pokémon on your Switch, choose a Pokémon game listed for that console in Nintendo’s Pokémon game catalog. It will be a separate Switch-compatible game, not a port of Pokémon X or Pokémon Y.

Can Pokémon HOME transfer Pokémon from X and Y?

Pokémon HOME is a way to move eligible Pokémon, not a way to play the original 3DS games on Switch. Nintendo lists Pokémon Bank among HOME’s compatibility options, but transfers depend on current rules and restrictions. Check Nintendo’s Pokémon HOME compatibility information before relying on a particular Pokémon being transferable to a specific destination.
