Salma joins you temporarily during Coming of Age at Ironbind Barrow, but she leaves when the quest ends instead of becoming a permanent follower. Mods can change that outcome.
Why Salma accompanies you at Ironbind Barrow
Salma is a Redguard adventurer you meet with Beem-Ja outside Ironbind Barrow during Coming of Age. They invite you into a treasure hunt and travel with you through the quest. That scripted company is temporary; it does not mean Salma has the ordinary follower dialogue that lets you recruit her for later adventures.
What happens to Salma after Coming of Age?
Beem-Ja turns against you near the end of the quest. Once he is defeated, Salma expresses regret about how the adventure ended and says she needs time to reflect. The quest reference records her leaving, not offering to follow you. The Coming of Age walkthrough reproduces her line: “I never cared for the treasure, I only wanted an adventure, but not for things to turn out like this and now I need time to reflect.”
How to recruit Salma with a mod
Skyrim Special Edition: Salma Replacer and Follower
The Salma Replacer and Follower listing says that after the quest, Salma can be found at Nightgate Inn and recruited after a brief conversation. The author describes it as an ESL mod and says Salma becomes essential once recruited. Check the live listing for availability and compatibility with your game version and other mods; its description does not establish compatibility with every setup.

Original Skyrim: Salma as a Follower
The older Salma as a Follower listing says it adds follower dialogue after the Ironbind Barrow encounter. Its author notes problems, including repeated ending dialogue and cases where console steps are needed to get Salma out of the cave. Treat it as an older, potentially buggy option rather than a guaranteed fix.

A Steam community post describes adding a character to the follower faction with console commands, but also warns that quest-involved characters can cause errors; the author recounts Salma vanishing as the quest state advanced. This is an anecdotal, version-sensitive workaround, not a supported recruitment path. If you try it, make a separate save first and be prepared to reload rather than rely on the character remaining available.
