Yes. You can play regular, non-VR PS5 games on PS VR2 in Cinematic Mode: the game appears on a virtual screen inside the headset. It remains a standard, flat game—not a 360-degree VR experience.
How regular PS5 games appear in PS VR2
Cinematic Mode puts the PS5’s game or media image on a virtual cinema screen. Sony says you can play non-VR PS5 games this way, while games made for PS VR2 use VR Mode to present content in a virtual environment. Wearing the headset does not turn a regular game into a VR game.
Sony lists Cinematic Mode display output as 1920×1080 HDR, with 24Hz, 60Hz, and 120Hz options. These are headset output specifications; they do not describe the native resolution or frame rate of every game. Sony’s PS VR2 features page describes the mode and its display output.
How to start a regular game
- Turn on your PS5 and PS VR2.
- Select a non-PS VR2 game or a media app on the PS5.
- View the content on the virtual screen in Cinematic Mode.
While Cinematic Mode is active, the social-screen image on the TV is disabled. You can resize the virtual screen in settings. To reposition it, hold the Options button on the PS VR2 Sense controller. Sony’s Cinematic Mode setup instructions cover these controls.

Cinematic Mode versus VR Mode
| What to expect | Cinematic Mode | VR Mode |
|---|---|---|
| What you play | Regular, non-VR PS5 games and media | Games that support PS VR2 |
| How it looks | A flat image on a virtual screen | VR content presented in a virtual environment |
| Play area | No VR play area required | Play-area requirements depend on the game and play style |
For VR games, Sony lists sitting, standing, and roomscale play styles. Its stated minimum is 1 m × 1 m (3 ft 4 in × 3 ft 4 in) for sitting or standing, with enough space to move the Sense controller; roomscale requires at least 2 m × 2 m (6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in). See Sony’s PS VR2 play-area guidance for details.

- PS VR games are not PS VR2 games. Sony says PS VR2 cannot play PS VR content.
- PS4 VR gameplay is not supported. The PS VR2 manual says supported PS4 games can appear in Cinematic Mode when played on a PS5, but PS VR2 is not compatible with the PS4 console and cannot play PS4 games in VR Mode.
- Check each game’s listing. PS VR2 support, play styles, and whether a controller such as DualSense is supported or required vary by title. Sony recommends checking compatibility and VR-system icons on the PlayStation Store.
For current console and game distinctions, consult Sony’s PS VR2 compatibility guidance and the PS VR2 instruction manual.
