Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor ordinary players, there is currently no documented, supported way to play Roblox inside an externally managed virtual machine. Roblox announced on August 7, 2025 that general players detected using third-party emulators are kicked and must switch to an official Roblox installation on a native platform. The exception is creator testing with the required experience permissions.
What Roblox officially supports
Roblox’s current policy uses the broad term emulators and does not publish a whitelist of supported virtual-machine products. It does not specifically confirm Hyper-V, VMware Workstation, VirtualBox, Parallels, or cloud VMs as supported for normal play.

For general players, the supported options are official Roblox versions downloaded from roblox.com, the App Store, or Google Play, and run on a supported native platform. See Roblox’s official emulator-policy announcement.
What happens when Roblox detects a VM
In affected configurations, Roblox may display “Roblox cannot run inside of a virtual machine”, open and immediately close, or exit before you join an experience. A loading screen followed by a shutdown can also be consistent with emulator detection; it should not automatically be diagnosed as a missing DirectX feature, insufficient RAM, or a graphics-driver fault.

Hardware acceleration or GPU passthrough does not change the policy. These features may improve graphics performance or address virtual-GPU limitations, but they do not make an externally managed VM officially supported or guarantee that Roblox will not detect it.
The supported creator-testing exception
Roblox allows users with edit permissions for an experience to test from an emulator. Roblox also said it planned to expand the exception to users with a play test-permission role, but its announcement did not provide a guaranteed date for that expansion.

This is different from ordinary players launching Roblox Player in a Windows or macOS guest. It is also different from Roblox Studio’s built-in emulator, which Roblox says is unaffected by the policy.

Disabling Hyper-V
On Windows, Hyper-V, Memory Integrity, and Credential Guard can conflict with third-party virtualization software. Microsoft explains that VMware and VirtualBox may fail to start guests or fall back to slower emulated virtualization when Hyper-V-related components are active. Its Windows virtualization guidance describes a host virtualization-stack conflict.

Disabling Hyper-V may improve VMware or VirtualBox performance, but it is not a Roblox-supported method for playing inside a VM. The Windows host conflict and Roblox’s separate emulator detection are two different problems.
GPU passthrough
GPU passthrough can help a guest operating system access stronger graphics hardware, but it does not remove evidence that the operating system is virtualized. Roblox has not stated that GPU passthrough makes Roblox Player supported in a VM.

Using the Microsoft Store version or an old 32-bit client
Claims that the Microsoft Store release bypasses detection, or that a legacy 32-bit client remains supported, are anecdotal and not exceptions in Roblox’s current policy. Roblox does not promise either method as a supported solution.

Running a hypervisor inside another VM adds another independent compatibility problem. The outer VM must expose hardware-virtualization extensions, and the guest hypervisor must then start successfully. VMware’s documentation says nested hypervisors are generally unsupported for VMware vSphere ESXi, Workstation, Fusion, and Player, subject to limited exceptions involving Hyper-V and Windows guests; see its nested-virtualization support article.

Even if nested virtualization works, it does not override Roblox’s emulator restriction. A cloud VM therefore has no documented general-player guarantee either.
What you should do instead
- For normal play: install Roblox natively from roblox.com, the App Store, or Google Play on an officially supported platform.
- For experience development: use Roblox Studio and its built-in emulator, or use an external emulator only when you have the permissions required for creator testing.
- If you see the VM error: do not assume that changing graphics settings, enabling passthrough, switching distribution channels, or disabling Hyper-V will make the setup supported.
- Do not bypass detection: VM-detection bypasses, client patching, anti-cheat tampering, and similar procedures are not supported instructions. Roblox’s Terms of Use, effective May 19, 2026, prohibit circumventing technological measures designed to protect the Services.
Bottom line
As of September 2026, Roblox Player in an externally managed VM is not a supported setup for ordinary players. It may technically launch in some configurations, but detected third-party emulators can be rejected or disconnected. Use native Roblox for playing, or Roblox Studio and the permitted testing workflow for development.
