How to Enable Steam Family Sharing in 2026: Steam Families Explained

By VGSources Team 5 min read

Steam Family Sharing is now part of Steam Families. To enable it, open Steam’s Store page, select Account Details, choose Family Management, then select Create a Family. Name the family and invite the other Steam accounts. Steam Families replaced the old device-authorization version of Family Sharing and Family View in September 2024.

Once someone joins, they automatically receive access to eligible games owned by other family members. Each player keeps separate saves, achievements, and Workshop files, but sharing is subject to game exclusions, regional restrictions, family-size limits, and a strict one-year membership cooldown.

How to enable Steam Family Sharing

  1. Open Steam’s Store page in the Steam Client, mobile app, or a web browser.
  2. Select Account Details.
  3. Open Family Management.
  4. Select Create a Family.
  5. Enter a family name. You can change the name later.
  6. Select Invite a Member.
  7. Search for or select the Steam account you want to invite.
  8. Choose whether the account is an adult or child.
  9. The invited account must accept the invitation from its Steam alert.

Valve supports family management through the Steam Client, mobile device, and web browser. The current setup is documented in Steam Support’s Family Management guide.

What Steam Families does

A Steam Family can contain up to six total members: the creator plus five invited accounts. Valve describes the feature as intended for a household of up to six close family members.

After joining, an account automatically gets access to eligible games owned by the other members. A family library appears in the Library’s games-list area. The account that bought a game remains its owner; joining a family does not transfer ownership.

Each person plays with their own:

  • Saved games
  • Steam achievements
  • Workshop files

You do not need to share one Steam login, authorize another computer, or sign the game owner into someone else’s device.

Can family members play at the same time?

Yes, but the number of copies matters. A family member can play a shared game while its owner is online playing a different game. However, only one person can use a particular owned copy at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if one family member owns one copy of Game A, only one family member can play that copy at once. If the family owns two copies, two members can play Game A simultaneously. Three simultaneous players require three family-owned copies.

This is different from the old system, where using the owner’s library could block access to the entire library.

Which games cannot be shared?

Steam Families shares games automatically; adults generally cannot opt individual games in or out of adult-to-adult sharing. A title may nevertheless be unavailable if it falls into one of Steam’s exclusion categories:

  • It requires an additional third-party key, account, or subscription.
  • It is free-to-play, or its DLC was purchased for a free-to-play game.
  • The game or DLC is restricted in the relevant region.
  • It does not support the other member’s operating system.
  • The publisher has marked it unavailable for Family Sharing.
  • The original owner has marked the game private.

Developers can opt out of Family Sharing for technical or other reasons, including after a game has previously been shareable. Steam carries publishers’ earlier Family Sharing settings into Steam Families. See Valve’s Steam Families documentation for developers for the publisher-side rules.

Offline play is also title-dependent. A shared game can be played offline only if that particular game supports Family Sharing, so an otherwise eligible title is not guaranteed to work offline.

How to set up parental controls

Steam Families gives adult members controls over child accounts. To configure them:

  1. Open Account Settings > Family Management.
  2. Select Manage.
  3. Expand the child’s entry.
  4. Toggle Enable Parental controls.

The parental-controls panel can manage game access, Steam feature access, and playtime limits. Adult controls can also cover access to the Steam Store, Community, and Friends Chat; hourly or daily playtime limits; playtime reports; approval for extra playtime or feature access; and child-account recovery.

Children cannot manage the family. They also cannot remove themselves from it.

How purchases work for child accounts

A child can submit a shopping-cart payment request to an adult in the family. The adult can approve and pay from a mobile device or email. When approved, the game is added to the child’s account—it is purchased for that account rather than merely borrowed from the adult.

Important restrictions before you create a family

Leaving can trigger a one-year wait

An adult can leave a Steam Family, but must wait one year from joining the previous family before creating or joining another. A family slot that becomes vacant also has a one-year cooldown before another member can occupy it.

Because of that restriction, do not treat Steam Families like a temporary sharing group for unrelated accounts. Check the members and roles carefully before accepting invitations. An adult family member can remove any member, while a child must be removed by an adult or Steam Support.

Cheating can affect the game’s owner

If a family member receives a game ban for cheating while playing another member’s copy, the owner of that copy is also banned in that game. Other family members are not affected. Only share with people whose conduct you trust.

What happened to old Steam Family Sharing instructions?

Steam Families became available to all users on September 11, 2024, replacing the previous Steam Family Sharing and Family View systems. Valve’s announcement is available on the Steam Community announcements page.

Older guides that tell you to open Steam > Settings > Family, enable Authorize Library Sharing on this device, authorize computers, or sign the owner into another device describe the legacy system. Those steps are not the current way to set up family sharing. Steam’s legacy guidance is preserved in its older Family Library Sharing help page.

If you previously used legacy Family Library Sharing, Steam recommends creating a Steam Family. After creation, Steam automatically recommends accounts that were previously authorized for sharing.

Family View settings also migrate: creating a Steam Family and adding a child transfers that account’s existing Family View settings into Steam Families parental controls. The old PIN-based unlock method is removed, while the other settings remain.

Steam Family Sharing troubleshooting checklist

  • A game is missing: Check whether it requires a third-party account or subscription, is free-to-play, is region-restricted, is private, is unsupported by the member’s operating system, or has been excluded by its publisher.
  • Two people cannot play the same game: Confirm how many family-owned copies exist. Each simultaneous player needs a separate copy.
  • The game will not work offline: Offline use is not guaranteed; the specific game must support Family Sharing.
  • You cannot invite someone: Check the six-member limit and the account’s family-membership cooldown.
  • You cannot find the old authorization setting: You are looking at an outdated guide. Use Account Details > Family Management instead.
  • A child has too much access: Open Account Settings > Family Management > Manage, expand the child’s entry, and enable parental controls.

Steam Families does not require a command-line command or other command-based enablement step. The setup is performed through Family Management.
