Yes. You can play Sea of Thieves on Steam with the same Xbox Live account you use on the Microsoft or Xbox version, and that account’s progress and items will be available. You still need a Steam license to launch the Steam version: owning Sea of Thieves on Xbox or Windows does not give you a free Steam copy.
How the shared account and progress work
Sea of Thieves ties game progress to your Xbox Live account, not to your Steam profile. Sign in on Steam with the Xbox Live account associated with the profile you want to use. Rare says ranks, cosmetics and currency will be available after you sign in, letting you continue where you left off.

That means your Steam profile and Xbox Live account serve different purposes: Steam provides access to the Steam game, while the Xbox Live account identifies your Sea of Thieves progress and items. Rare’s support guide explains this in its Steam account-linking instructions; the Sea of Thieves Steam Launch FAQ also confirms that progress carries over.
How to link the right Xbox Live account on Steam
- Start Sea of Thieves through Steam.
- When prompted, sign in with the Xbox Live account that has the Sea of Thieves progress and items you want to access.
- Confirm the account-link prompt.
Rare’s support guide also says you can link through Xbox Game Bar or the Xbox app. A Microsoft account must be signed up to Xbox Live for this process; this is an account prerequisite, not a separate subscription requirement.

If you linked the wrong account
Sign out from the game’s start screen or main menu, then sign in with the correct Xbox Live account. If you unlink the original account and use a different one, the original account’s progress and items will not be available while the other account is linked. Link the original account again to access that profile’s progress and items.

Check these two things before switching platforms
- Account: Make sure you can sign in to the Xbox Live account that holds the profile you want. Progress follows that account, not the Steam account.
- Game license: Check that you own Sea of Thieves on the storefront you intend to use. Shared progress does not transfer a game license between Steam, Xbox and Windows.
