Yes. You can play the first Final Fantasy on PS5 through the PS4 version of FINAL FANTASY Pixel Remaster. It is a remaster based on the 1987 game, not an unchanged copy of the original release. PlayStation lists it as playable on PS5, with a caveat: some PS4 features may be absent, and the console may need updated system software.
Which version of Final Fantasy 1 works on PS5?
Look for the PS4 PlayStation Store game titled FINAL FANTASY. Square Enix released this Pixel Remaster on April 19, 2023. Its store description calls it a remodeled 2D version based on the original Final Fantasy, first released in 1987.

This is a PS4 product that PlayStation identifies as playable on PS5; the listing does not describe it as a native PS5 edition. The remaster updates the pixel graphics and audio and includes options and extras absent from an unchanged original-era release.
What the Pixel Remaster changes and adds
- Updated pixel graphics and audio.
- A choice between rearranged music and a soundtrack based on the original.
- Selectable fonts.
- Auto-battle and optional adjustments to encounters and experience.
- A bestiary, illustration gallery, and music player.
How to get it: individual game, bundle, or physical collection
| Route | What you get | PS5 and availability notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual digital game | The PS4 FINAL FANTASY Pixel Remaster, listed on the PlayStation Store. | PlayStation lists it as playable on PS5, subject to possible feature differences and system software requirements. |
| Digital I–VI bundle | FINAL FANTASY I–VI Bundle, covering all six Pixel Remasters. | The PlayStation bundle page notes PS5 compatibility. Its US page showed a promotion ending September 24, 2026; that offer has passed, so it should not be treated as a current deal. |
| Physical I–VI collection | A PS4 FINAL FANTASY I–VI COLLECTION edition. | Square Enix announced it as a limited physical release exclusive to the Square Enix Store while supplies lasted. Current stock is not established, and this is not evidence of a PS5 disc edition. |
Square Enix described the PS4 Pixel Remaster series as a digital release and separately announced the limited physical collection. The announcement does not establish present stock or availability through other retailers. Check the store serving your region for current listings.

- These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
- The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.

- Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
What to expect when playing on PS5
PlayStation’s compatibility notice says the PS4 game is playable on PS5, but some features available on PS4 may be absent. PlayStation also says the console may need the latest system software. The product information does not identify which features might differ, so do not assume every option has been verified to work identically on PS5.
For the original adventure on a PS5, the documented route is therefore the PS4 Pixel Remaster. If you specifically want an unchanged 1987 release, this product is not that: it updates presentation and includes modern convenience options.
Rank #2
- Final Fantasy IV IS consistently rated as one of the Top 50 games ever
- Vibrant Visuals And Unforgettable Melodies: A complete graphical overhaul for both Final Fantasy IV and The After Years
- Original SNES soundtrack, an all-new intro movie and cinematic CGI sequences from previous release, and a monster encyclopedia
Which option should you choose?
- You only want the first game: check the individual PS4 FINAL FANTASY listing in your regional PlayStation Store.
- You want the full numbered collection: compare the digital I–VI bundle with buying games individually; bundle pricing and availability can vary over time and by region.
- You want a physical set: the announced PS4 I–VI collection was limited and Square Enix Store exclusive while supplies lasted. Its current availability is not confirmed.
For the series’ release history, PlayStation’s US Final Fantasy guide identifies the first game as a 1987 release.
