Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUsually, yes. You can generally run two different Steam games at the same time on one Windows PC, even when both are launched through the same Steam account. The main limits are your computer’s available CPU, GPU, RAM, storage performance and cooling, plus game-specific DRM, anti-cheat software and external launchers.
This is different from using one Steam account to play on two separate computers, which Steam does not support for simultaneous users. It is also different from launching two copies of the same game, which is a separate, game-specific problem.

The short answer
| Situation | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Two different games on one computer | Usually works |
| Two copies of the same game | Often blocked or dependent on the game |
| One account playing on two computers | Not supported while both sessions are active online |
| Separate accounts using Steam Families | Different games can generally be played simultaneously when sharing is supported |
Steam Community reports document multiple different games running concurrently on one PC, but Steam does not provide a universal guarantee that every pair of games will work together. The individual games and your hardware ultimately decide the result. See the Steam Community discussion about running multiple games and this discussion about multiple games on one PC.

- Open Steam and launch the first game normally.
- Wait until it reaches its main menu or has finished loading.
- Press Alt+Tab or the Windows key to return to the desktop.
- Open Steam, select Library, choose a different game and click Play.
- Use Alt+Tab to switch between the games.
You normally do not need a special Steam setting or launch command. If Steam asks whether you want to stop the first game, select Cancel, confirm that the first game has fully started, and try launching the second one from the Steam Library rather than from the first game’s overlay.

Can you actively play both games?
Both games can remain open, but running them is not the same as controlling them simultaneously.
- With one monitor, you will usually switch focus with Alt+Tab.
- With two monitors, you can place each game on a separate display if both support windowed or borderless-windowed mode.
- Exclusive fullscreen can make switching slower or cause a game to minimize.
- Some games pause, throttle performance, disconnect or stop accepting input when they lose focus.
- One keyboard and mouse normally cannot control two games independently at the same time.
For multitasking, set one or both games to Borderless Windowed or Windowed mode. A frame-rate cap for the background game can also leave more resources for the game you are actively playing.
Why the second game may fail to launch
Steam says another game is already running
The first game may still be starting, Steam may have stale information about a game that closed badly, or both titles may depend on a launcher with its own restrictions. Close the prompt, wait for the first game to finish loading, and retry from the Library. If the problem remains:

- Check Task Manager for a game or launcher process that is still running.
- End only the process belonging to the closed game if it is clearly stuck.
- Exit Steam completely, reopen it and launch the games in sequence.
Steam’s launch-options documentation describes game-specific launch behavior; it does not provide a universal switch that forces every game to run concurrently.

An external launcher blocks the second game
Games using Ubisoft Connect, the EA app, Rockstar Games Launcher or another publisher service may impose their own login or session restrictions. Steam may successfully start the executable while the external service prevents a second title from authenticating.
Anti-cheat reports a conflict
Anti-cheat systems can object to another game, overlay, launcher or background process. Do not attempt to bypass anti-cheat or DRM restrictions. Check the game publisher’s support guidance instead.
The second game crashes or performance becomes unusable
Two games compete for the same hardware. Try lowering settings in one game, capping its frame rate, pausing Steam downloads and closing browsers, recording software, overlays and unnecessary launchers. Use Task Manager, Xbox Game Bar’s performance widget or a hardware monitor to check CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM and temperatures.
How much hardware do you need?
There is no reliable fixed RAM, VRAM or graphics-card requirement because the answer depends on the two specific games and your resolution and settings.

- Demanding game plus lightweight game: Frequently practical.
- Two demanding modern 3D games: Possible on a powerful desktop, but often too demanding for mid-range systems.
- Older laptop or integrated graphics: More likely to experience stutter, crashes or thermal throttling.
RAM shortages can cause paging and severe stutter. Two 3D games may compete for GPU processing power and VRAM, while simulation-heavy games can consume substantial CPU time. A hard drive may also struggle when both games stream assets. Laptops can reduce performance under battery, power or thermal limits.
What if Steam asks to close the first game?
That prompt does not necessarily mean Steam universally prohibits two games on one computer. It can indicate a stuck Steam state, a shared publisher launcher, a game-specific single-instance rule, or an attempt to use one account across separate computers.
Cancel the prompt, make sure the first game is fully loaded, and launch the second title from Steam’s Library. If Steam still refuses, restart the client and check the second game’s support page for launcher, DRM or anti-cheat requirements.

Can you run two copies of the same game?
Do not assume that because two different games can run together, two instances of one game will work. The second launch may:

- Be refused by Steam or the game.
- Bring the existing instance to the foreground.
- Open a second process that DRM or anti-cheat then closes.
- Fail because both instances try to use the same online account.
- Work only through an official, game-specific mode for testing, LAN play or multiple accounts.
Any command-line method is specific to that title and may stop working after an update or conflict with its rules. Do not bypass licensing, DRM or anti-cheat protections.
Does this work with online games?
Possibly. Steam launching both games does not guarantee that their online services will accept both sessions. Restrictions may come from the game’s account system, server rules, anti-cheat software, publisher launcher or a requirement that each instance use a different account.
An online game plus an offline or lightweight game is usually the easiest combination. Two online games may also compete for CPU, GPU, bandwidth and background services.
What about playing on two computers?
Running two games on one computer should not be confused with using one Steam account on two PCs. Steam’s official account-use guidance says simultaneous play by multiple users on one account is not supported and may produce an “Invalid Steam UserID Ticket” error. Read Steam’s official account-use FAQ for that limitation.

Steam Offline Mode is not the standard solution for running two games on one PC. It is intended for compatible games without Steam network access. To prepare for it, launch the games online once, update them, confirm they do not require an active connection or external launcher, save your credentials under Steam > Settings > Security, then choose Steam > Go Offline. Steam warns that online-only games and titles using external launchers may not work in Offline Mode. See Steam’s Offline Mode guidance.
Using Steam Families
Steam Families matters when multiple people use separate Steam accounts and want to share eligible games. Steam says a family can contain up to six members, and members can play different games from the shared libraries at the same time when the titles support sharing.
For the same shared game, the family generally needs multiple copies if multiple members want to play it simultaneously. Developers can exclude games from Family Sharing, and titles that depend on external launchers or incompatible operating-system requirements may not work as expected. See Steam’s Steam Families FAQ, its Steam Families announcement and the developer documentation.
Save files and Steam Cloud
Opening two different games does not merge their saves; each title manages its own save files. However, be careful if the same game or save is open on another device. Steam Cloud can present a conflict when local and cloud progress differ, and external launchers may use separate cloud-save systems.
If a conflict appears, stop and compare which session contains the newest progress before choosing the local or cloud copy. Offline sessions can delay synchronization, and a game that saves continuously may overwrite progress unexpectedly.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- One person, one PC, two different games: Launch both normally; hardware and game-specific services are the main constraints.
- Two copies of one game: Check that game’s rules; do not assume it supports duplicate instances.
- Two people, two PCs, one account: Use separate Steam accounts instead of sharing credentials.
- Separate accounts with shared libraries: Steam Families may work for eligible games.
- Two people want the same shared game: Multiple copies are generally required.
- Two independently controlled windows: Use two monitors and windowed or borderless modes, but remember that input control remains a separate limitation.
