hkdll.dll Errors: Safe Diagnosis and Repair on Windows 11/10

By VGSources Team 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

hkdll.dll is not a normal Windows component, and its historical associations are more concerning than the commonly repeated OpenCV description suggests. If Windows says hkdll.dll is missing or cannot load, identify the program and file path first, then remove unwanted monitoring software or reinstall the legitimate application that actually requested it.

What this file actually does

The name hkdll.dll has been described as a “Small GUI & Video library for OpenCV samples” belonging to Intel’s Open Source Computer Vision Library. That attribution is not reliably confirmed for this exact filename. The better-documented historical associations point to Actual Spy, Actual Keylogger, and related ASMonitor installations.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters. A missing DLL message does not prove that the file belongs to Windows, OpenCV, Intel, or the application you were trying to open. It only means that something attempted to load a file with that name and Windows could not complete the request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unlike a Microsoft system DLL, hkdll.dll is not established as a component of Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is also not a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, a Windows driver, or a standard file that should be copied into System32 or SysWOW64.

Microsoft Windows 11 (USB)
  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

The filename alone cannot prove that every copy is malicious. Files can be renamed, reused, or bundled with different software. However, a copy found in an unfamiliar monitoring, startup, or program directory deserves immediate security checks, especially if it appeared after antivirus software quarantined or removed a threat.

The most important clues are:

  • The complete path of the file.
  • The program that displayed the error.
  • The antivirus detection name.
  • The file’s digital signature and publisher.
  • Whether the file is referenced by a startup item, scheduled task, service, or shortcut.

Do not rely on an online DLL listing that assigns an internal description to the file. Verify the exact filename shown in the error dialog. A typo is possible, particularly if the intended file was highgui.dll, highgui100.dll, or another opencv_*.dll.

Causes by symptom

What you see Most likely explanation Correct response
The message appeared after an antivirus detection Antivirus removed a suspicious DLL but left an autorun reference Scan the PC, uninstall the associated software, and remove the leftover startup entry
The error names ASMonitor, Actual Spy, or Actual Keylogger Historical monitoring software is trying to start Treat the installation as unwanted unless you knowingly installed it
A known computer-vision application fails The application may use a different OpenCV DLL, or its installation is damaged Confirm the exact filename and reinstall the application from its developer
The error appears immediately after signing in A startup shortcut, registry entry, task, or service still points to the missing file Inspect startup locations and remove only the entry belonging to the unwanted program
The file is under System32 or SysWOW64 The location is suspicious because this is not a verified Windows component Do not replace it or register it; scan the machine and check its signer
regsvr32 reports a missing entry point The DLL is an ordinary application library, not a self-registering COM component Stop using regsvr32; repair or remove the owning application
SFC and DISM report no problems Windows system files are probably intact Focus on the third-party program, startup reference, or security event
Only one legitimate program fails That program’s files or dependencies may be incomplete Repair or reinstall that program from its official installer

First, find out what is requesting hkdll.dll

Do this before downloading anything or changing Windows folders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the exact error

Read the complete message and copy the filename manually. Windows may show messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because hkdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “There was a problem starting hkdll.dll.”
  • “Error loading hkdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because hkdll.dll was not found.”

These are generic loader messages. They do not identify the publisher or prove that the missing file was safe.

Also note when the message appears:

  • During startup
  • When opening a particular application
  • When launching a game
  • After an antivirus cleanup
  • After uninstalling software

If the error appears before you open any program, an autorun item is more likely than a healthy application missing a dependency.

Search for remaining copies

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC in the left pane.
  3. Click the search box in the upper-right corner.
  4. Search for hkdll.dll.
  5. Record every full path that appears.
  6. Right-click each result and select Properties.
  7. Check the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.

Do not delete a file solely because its name looks suspicious. A path under an unfamiliar monitoring directory is more significant than the name by itself. A file with no publisher, no signature, and a recent creation date should be handled as potentially unsafe.

Check Microsoft Defender Protection History

If the message started after a security scan:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Under Current threats, select Protection history.
  5. Expand entries related to hkdll.dll or the program that attempted to load it.
  6. Read the detection name and affected path.

Do not restore the item just to make the error disappear. Restoration puts the file back where security software can detect it again. Only consider restoration when the file belongs to a known legitimate application and you have independently verified its publisher, path, and purpose.

Fix 1: Scan the PC and remove suspected monitoring software

This is the safest first repair when the file is associated with Actual Spy, Actual Keylogger, ASMonitor, or an unknown monitoring program.

Run a full scan

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Click Scan now.
  6. Allow Windows to quarantine or remove detected threats.
  7. Restart Windows after the scan completes.

If you suspect active spyware or the normal scan cannot remove the item:

  1. Return to Windows Security → Virus & threat protection.
  2. Select Scan options.
  3. Choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
  4. Click Scan now.
  5. Save your work and allow Windows to restart.

Defender Offline scans before the normal Windows desktop loads, which can help when a process protects or reloads the unwanted file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Uninstall the associated program

After scanning:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for Actual Spy, Actual Keylogger, ASMonitor, or an unfamiliar program installed around the time the error began.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Follow the uninstaller’s instructions.
  8. Restart the computer.
  9. Run another full scan.

Remove only software you can confidently identify as unwanted. Historical removal instructions for these old programs may mention registry values and file paths, but do not blindly delete registry entries based on an old list.

Remove a leftover startup reference

If the error remains after the program is removed:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an entry associated with the removed program or an unknown publisher.
  4. Right-click it and select Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Then check scheduled tasks:

  1. Open Start and type Task Scheduler.
  2. Open Task Scheduler.
  3. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  4. Review tasks whose names clearly identify the removed monitoring program.
  5. Open a task and inspect its Actions tab.
  6. Delete only a task that clearly launches the unwanted program or points to its leftover directory.

Do not disable random Microsoft tasks or entries merely because they have no obvious description. If the message continues, also inspect the program’s uninstall entry and any related service before making further changes.

The repair worked when Windows starts without the hkdll.dll message and the suspicious program no longer appears in installed apps, startup entries, scheduled tasks, or security history.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the legitimate application

Use this path only when you knowingly installed the application that displays the error and its publisher is trustworthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try the built-in repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Restart the application.

Some desktop programs instead provide a repair option in Control Panel:

  1. Open Start and type Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs → Programs and Features.
  3. Right-click the affected program.
  4. Choose Repair, if available.
  5. Follow the prompts and restart Windows.

Reinstall from the original source

If repair does not help:

  1. Uninstall the affected application from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Download the application only from its official developer or use the original installer you trust.
  4. Install it normally.
  5. Restart Windows again.
  6. Open the application and confirm whether the error has disappeared.

For a genuine OpenCV-based program, use the program developer’s installer or its documented build output. OpenCV’s Windows guidance explains that application DLLs are normally found beside the executable or in the configured OpenCV binary directory, not by copying files into Windows system folders.

If the application still requests hkdll.dll, inspect its installation directory and dependency list. The program may have been built with an old or incorrect filename, or the error may actually refer to a different OpenCV library.

Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application generally requires its 32-bit dependencies even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Installing a 64-bit DLL in its place will not solve the problem and may produce a different loader error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe rule is:

  • Keep an application’s DLLs in the application’s own folder unless its documentation says otherwise.
  • Install the architecture required by the application, not simply the architecture of Windows.
  • Do not copy a 32-bit file into System32.
  • Do not copy a 64-bit file into SysWOW64.
  • Do not mix DLLs from different application builds.

Windows uses separate file-system redirection rules for 32-bit and 64-bit software. A system-folder copy can also affect unrelated programs and hide the actual installation problem.

Fix 3: Remove a broken shortcut or startup entry

Sometimes antivirus has correctly removed the file, but Windows continues trying to launch the old program.

Check the Startup folder

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter shell:startup.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for a shortcut belonging to the removed application.
  5. Right-click the shortcut and choose Delete.
  6. Repeat with shell:common startup if the computer has multiple users.
  7. Restart Windows.

Delete only a shortcut that clearly points to the unwanted program. If the shortcut belongs to software you still use, repair or reinstall that software instead.

Check the application’s shortcut

If the message appears after clicking a desktop shortcut:

  4. Confirm that it points to the intended program.
  5. If the target points to a deleted directory or suspicious executable, remove the shortcut.
  6. Create a new shortcut from the application’s repaired installation if necessary.

A persistent message after the shortcut is removed usually means another startup mechanism is involved, such as Task Scheduler or a service.

Fix 4: Use System File Checker and DISM only for Windows corruption

SFC and DISM are useful when protected Windows components are damaged. They will not recreate a third-party hkdll.dll, and running them should not be your main response to a file associated with spyware or an old application.

First install pending updates and restart:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.

Then open an elevated Terminal:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Terminal.
  3. Right-click Windows Terminal.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart when both commands complete.

A successful result means Windows repaired or verified protected system components. It does not mean that a missing third-party DLL was restored. If both commands report no violations and the error remains, return to the application, malware, and startup checks.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through repair steps and do not know what changed; its free scan identifies issues, while repair features require the full version, and reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix for an application-specific DLL.

Fix 5: Do not update drivers unless the evidence points there

hkdll.dll is not established as a device driver. Updating graphics, chipset, printer, or camera drivers is therefore not a direct fix for this filename unless the affected program is a known hardware application and its publisher specifically identifies a driver dependency.

If a hardware-related application is failing:

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.
  2. Expand Driver updates, if available.
  3. Install only a driver that matches the affected hardware.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Test the application again.

You can also check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Cameras, Display adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the Device status message.
  7. Use Update driver only when a driver problem is actually reported.

Do not install a driver simply because a DLL website recommends it. The driver and the application are separate components.

Outbyte Driver Updater can help identify stale drivers when you are manually checking many devices; its free scan shows the reported issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional, and it will not replace the legitimate application that owns hkdll.dll.

Why downloading hkdll.dll is usually the wrong repair

Do not download hkdll.dll from a random DLL download site and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That approach can fail because:

  • The file may contain malware.
  • The version may not match the program.
  • The architecture may be wrong.
  • The file may have been modified or renamed.
  • The missing DLL may only be one of several missing dependencies.
  • The real problem may be an unwanted startup reference.
  • A replacement can allow spyware to run again.

The safe sources are the official installer for the legitimate application, the application’s original installation media, or the official OpenCV distribution and documentation when the program genuinely uses OpenCV. Microsoft’s own system repair tools are appropriate for Windows components, not for reconstructing an unverified third-party DLL.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

regsvr32 registers certain COM and ActiveX DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.

Do not run:

regsvr32 hkdll.dll

unless the application’s publisher explicitly instructs you to do so and documents that this particular file supports registration. An ordinary application library will often produce an error about a missing entry point, and forcing registration does not restore missing dependencies or remove a startup reference.

Should you enable Windows Features or install runtimes

Windows Features are not a reliable source for this file. Enabling .NET Framework, legacy components, or other optional features will not recreate an unverified hkdll.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and graphics drivers are not proven fixes for this exact filename. Install a runtime only when the legitimate application’s official documentation or installer identifies it as a requirement. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the application itself.

When System Restore is appropriate

System Restore is a fallback when:

  • The error began recently.
  • You have a restore point from before the change.
  • The affected program was legitimate.
  • Malware removal and application repair have not resolved the problem.

To check:

  1. Open Start and type Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  5. Review the affected programs.
  6. Start the restore if the point is appropriate.

System Restore is not a substitute for malware removal. If spyware may be active, scan first and seek professional incident-response help for a business or sensitive computer.

Frequently asked questions

Is hkdll.dll part of Windows?

No verified evidence establishes it as a Windows 10 or Windows 11 component. Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.

Is hkdll.dll an Intel OpenCV file?

The commonly repeated OpenCV description is not verified for the exact filename. It may be a mix-up with highgui.dll or another OpenCV library. Confirm the exact filename and the application that requested it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is hkdll.dll malware?

The filename alone is not enough to prove that. Historical evidence strongly associates particular copies with Actual Spy, Actual Keylogger, and ASMonitor, so a copy in one of those directories should be treated as suspicious and scanned.

Why did the error appear after antivirus removed the file?

The security software may have removed the DLL while leaving a startup shortcut, scheduled task, service, or registry reference. Remove the unwanted program and its verified leftover startup entry instead of restoring the file.

Can I fix it by copying the file from another PC?

No. The other copy may have the wrong architecture, version, publisher, or security status. Reinstall the legitimate owning application from its official source.

What if the message actually meant highgui.dll?

That is plausible. Copy the exact filename from the error dialog, then repair or reinstall the OpenCV-based application that requested it. Do not substitute one DLL name for another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error remain after uninstalling the program?

An autorun shortcut, scheduled task, service, or broken registry reference may remain. Check Task Manager’s Startup apps, the Startup folders, and Task Scheduler for entries clearly belonging to the removed program.

Will SFC or DISM restore hkdll.dll?

No. They repair protected Windows components. They will not recreate a third-party application DLL or remove a spyware startup reference.

Should I use Device Manager?

Only if the affected application is reporting a genuine hardware or driver problem. Device Manager is not a general solution for hkdll.dll.

What is the safest fix?

Run a full Microsoft Defender scan, use Defender Offline when spyware is suspected, identify the file path and owner, uninstall unwanted monitoring software, remove its leftover startup reference, and reinstall a legitimate application only from its official source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
