No—not as an officially supported setup. Microsoft’s current Xbox Cloud Gaming requirements do not list PlayStation 5 as a supported device, and Sony says PS5 does not include a dedicated web-browser app. That means the official documentation does not establish a supported way to run Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5. It does not prove that every unofficial workaround is impossible or dependable.
If your priority is responsive, locally rendered Xbox play, an Xbox console with a compatible game installed is the clearer option. If you value access from several supported devices and do not mind a network stream, Xbox Cloud Gaming can be convenient. “Better” depends on that trade-off rather than on a universal performance verdict.

Can you play Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5?
What Microsoft’s requirements establish
Microsoft’s current Xbox Cloud Gaming information lists supported device categories and supported browsers, but PS5 is not among them. The documented categories include Windows PCs; Apple and Android phones and tablets; Xbox consoles; selected LG, Samsung and VIDAA smart TVs; Amazon Fire TV; and selected Meta Quest headsets. The service can also be accessed through browsers on supported computers and mobile platforms.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Because PS5 is absent from that list, the accurate conclusion is not officially supported by the documented requirements. That is narrower than saying Xbox Cloud Gaming can never run on a PS5. An unsupported experiment, exploit or future software change is not the same as a supported product feature, and the available official information does not validate any such workaround.

Why a browser idea does not solve the problem
Xbox Cloud Gaming supports browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Safari when used on supported devices. Sony, however, says PS5 does not include a dedicated web-browser app. Without an officially supported browser path or a PS5 entry in Microsoft’s device list, there is no documented setup you can follow on the console itself.
A PS5 can still be part of your entertainment system while Xbox Cloud Gaming runs elsewhere—for example, on a computer, phone, supported television or streaming device. That is different from running the Xbox service on PS5.
What this means in practice
- Do not subscribe or buy hardware on the assumption that PS5 is an approved Xbox Cloud Gaming endpoint.
- Use Microsoft’s live requirements and catalog information to verify a supported device, game, plan and region.
- Treat claims that a particular PS5 workaround is guaranteed as unverified unless Microsoft or Sony documents it.
What Xbox Cloud Gaming requires on a supported device
Subscription, game and region eligibility
Microsoft says most cloud play requires an active Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential subscription, a supported game and region, a supported device and a compatible controller. The exact cloud catalog is not permanent: availability can change by time, region, Game Pass plan and platform.
There is a limited exception for selected free-to-play games. In supported regions, those titles can be played with a free Microsoft account. That exception does not make PS5 a supported device, and it does not apply to every game.
Device and browser support
The current support page should be your authority for a present-day compatibility check because Microsoft’s list can evolve. A December 19, 2025 Xbox Wire guide describes cloud play through apps on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, gaming handhelds, smart TVs and streaming devices, and Meta Quest. It also describes browser play on macOS, iOS and iPadOS, Android, ChromeOS and Steam Deck. The current requirements page takes precedence if the two lists differ.
Internet connection and controller
Microsoft specifies a 10 Mbps minimum connection for Xbox Cloud Gaming and notes that some devices may require 20 Mbps for best quality. These are service requirements or recommendations, not a promise that a stream will be sharp, stable or lag-free at those speeds. Microsoft recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. A compatible controller is also part of the normal setup.

Connection quality depends on more than the headline download rate. Wireless interference, congestion, distance to the service and the device’s own network behavior can affect the result. The official figures should therefore be used as a baseline check, not as a performance guarantee.
Game availability is separate from device availability
A supported phone, television or computer does not automatically make every Xbox title playable in the cloud. The game must be cloud-eligible under your plan and region at the time you play. Check the live catalog before subscribing for one particular title, especially if the game is the main reason for choosing streaming.
How native Xbox play works
The console runs the installed game
With native play, a compatible Xbox game is installed on an Xbox console and the console renders the game locally. Microsoft’s guide says Game Pass titles can be downloaded to a console, PC or handheld for offline play. The practical distinction is that the game session is not being continuously delivered as video from a remote Xbox.
Offline use after installation
A downloaded title can be played offline according to Microsoft’s guidance, subject to the game’s own requirements and any account or license checks it may need. Cloud play, by contrast, requires an active network connection for the session because the game is running remotely and the video output is being streamed to you.
Hardware requirement
Native Xbox play requires Xbox hardware. An Xbox Series X is the most direct hardware fit for someone choosing the local-play side of this comparison; verify the current model, stock and specifications before buying. A compatible Xbox controller is useful for cloud play on supported devices as well, but it does not turn PS5 into an officially supported Xbox Cloud Gaming device.

| Question | Xbox Cloud Gaming | Native Xbox play |
|---|---|---|
| Is PS5 support established by official documentation? | No. PS5 is not listed among Microsoft’s documented supported devices, and Sony says PS5 has no dedicated browser app. | Not applicable. Local play requires an Xbox console. |
| Where does the game run? | On a remote Xbox, with gameplay video and input transmitted over the network. | On the Xbox console after a compatible game is installed. |
| Internet dependence | Required throughout the cloud session. Microsoft gives a 10 Mbps minimum and says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. | A downloaded title can be played offline according to Microsoft’s guide. |
| Responsiveness | Streaming adds a network leg between your input and the remote console. Results vary with the connection and other conditions; no universal latency figure is established here. | Avoids the cloud-streaming leg. No controlled measurement is available to quantify the difference for a particular game or player. |
| Catalog access | Requires a cloud-eligible game, plan and region. | Requires access to and installation of the compatible Xbox game. |
| Where you can play | Across Microsoft’s supported device categories, subject to current compatibility rules. | On Xbox hardware, with the installed game. |
| Convenience | Can avoid a console download and work across supported screens, but depends on network quality and service availability. | Requires Xbox hardware and installation, then offers local execution and offline capability for downloaded titles. |
Is playing on Xbox better than streaming?
Responsiveness-sensitive games
Microsoft Game Development Kit documentation states: “Game streaming adds latency between the user and the Xbox console that’s running your game.” That extra path can matter more in games where immediate input response is important. The statement explains the mechanism, not a fixed number of milliseconds for every household.

Native play removes that cloud-streaming route. It is therefore the safer choice when your decision is primarily about avoiding network-dependent input delay. It would be inaccurate to promise that every Xbox setup feels identical, because local display, controller and console conditions still vary.
Unreliable or restricted internet
If your connection is shared, congested or unavailable for periods of time, local play is more dependable after the game is installed. Cloud play can be excellent when the network is stable, but a speed test that meets Microsoft’s minimum does not guarantee consistent image quality or low input delay.
Convenience and access across screens
Cloud gaming is more convenient when you already own a supported phone, computer, television, streaming device or headset and want to avoid installing a large game. It also lets one subscription reach several supported device types. That flexibility is the principal advantage over an Xbox-only local setup.
Catalog and ownership questions
Cloud eligibility follows Microsoft’s plan, platform, region and time-based catalog rules. A title may be available for download on Xbox while not being available to stream under the plan or region you are using. Conversely, cloud access may be useful when you do not want to install the game immediately. Check the title’s current status rather than assuming that download and cloud rights are identical.
How to check whether cloud play will work for you
Use this verification sequence
- Choose the device first. Confirm that the computer, mobile device, television, streaming device, console or headset appears on Microsoft’s current supported-device information. Do not substitute PS5 for an item on that list.
- Check the access method. If you plan to use a browser, verify that the device supports one of Microsoft’s listed browsers. If you plan to use an app, check that Microsoft lists the relevant platform and app route.
- Check the game. Look up the title in the live Xbox cloud catalog while signed in to the region and plan you intend to use. Availability can change.
- Check the plan or free-to-play exception. Most cloud sessions require Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential. Only selected free-to-play games qualify for the free-account option, and only in supported regions.
- Check the controller. Have a compatible controller ready. A controller can operate a supported cloud device; it cannot add official PS5 compatibility.
- Check the connection. Compare your connection with Microsoft’s 10 Mbps minimum, account for the possibility that your device may need 20 Mbps for best quality, and prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi where practical.
Prepare the network realistically
Use the minimum figures as a go/no-go screen, then test at the time and location where you normally play. If several people are streaming or downloading, the available capacity for the game can fall. Moving to a less congested 5 GHz connection may help, but neither that change nor a qualifying speed test guarantees a smooth session.
If the only screen you have is PS5
There is no documented PS5 setup to complete. Use a supported computer, mobile device, television, streaming device or headset instead, or choose native Xbox hardware if local play is the goal. Waiting for an official compatibility change is different from relying on an unofficial workaround.

Sony’s separate service
Sony’s PlayStation cloud-streaming service is a different platform. Its current information describes selected PS5 games streamed to PS5 consoles and PlayStation Portal with PlayStation Plus Premium in listed regions. It is not a route to Xbox games or Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Supported alternatives to PS5 for Xbox Cloud Gaming
Computers and mobile devices
Microsoft lists Windows PCs plus Apple and Android phones and tablets among its supported categories. Browser access is described for macOS, iOS and iPadOS, Android, ChromeOS and Steam Deck in the December 2025 guide. Confirm the current requirements before relying on a particular operating-system version or browser.
Televisions and streaming devices
Selected LG, Samsung and VIDAA smart TVs and Amazon Fire TV are listed categories. Models and regional availability can change, so check the exact television or streaming-device compatibility rather than assuming that every product in a brand family works.
Xbox consoles, handhelds and headsets
Xbox consoles, gaming handhelds and selected Meta Quest headsets are also described in Microsoft’s materials. The live support page remains the right place to verify the exact model, app and region combination.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
“The minimum speed means it will be smooth.”
It does not. Ten Mbps is Microsoft’s stated minimum, and some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Treat those figures as prerequisites, not a promise about resolution, buffering or input response.

“Every Game Pass game streams.”
Cloud access depends on the title, time, region, plan and platform. Confirm the game in the live catalog before committing to a subscription or device.
“A controller makes PS5 compatible.”
A compatible controller is required for normal cloud play on a supported endpoint. It does not create a browser app, add PS5 to Microsoft’s device list or make an unsupported workaround official.
“PlayStation cloud streaming can run Xbox games.”
Sony’s service streams selected PlayStation games. Its existence does not bridge the Xbox and PlayStation cloud catalogs.
“Streaming latency has a universal value.”
No controlled comparison or universal latency measurement is established for this choice. Microsoft documents that streaming adds latency, but the amount experienced by a particular player depends on the full network and hardware path.
Which option fits which player?
| Your priority | More suitable direction | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want Xbox games on PS5 specifically | Neither officially on PS5 | The documented Xbox requirements do not list PS5, and PS5 has no dedicated browser app. |
| You want the lowest dependence on internet conditions | Native Xbox play | An installed compatible game can be played offline according to Microsoft’s guide. |
| You want to use a computer, phone, television or streaming device you already own | Xbox Cloud Gaming | Those are among Microsoft’s supported categories, subject to exact model, plan, region and catalog checks. |
| You play titles where immediate input response is especially important | Native Xbox play is the lower-risk choice | It avoids the cloud-streaming leg that Microsoft says adds latency; no fixed advantage is quantified here. |
| You want to avoid installing a game before trying it | Xbox Cloud Gaming, if the title is eligible | Streaming runs the game remotely, but still requires a supported device, controller, connection, plan and region. |
| You want PlayStation games streamed to PS5 | PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming | Sony’s separate service covers selected PS5 games in listed regions; it does not provide Xbox Cloud Gaming. |
Bottom line for a PS5 owner
Official information does not currently establish Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5 as a supported configuration. Use a supported Xbox cloud device if flexibility matters, or install compatible games on Xbox hardware if local execution and offline play matter more. Choose between those two delivery methods based on your device access, connection reliability, catalog needs and sensitivity to streaming latency—not on an assumption that PS5 can act as an Xbox cloud client.
