How to Make a Small Game Prototype With Generative AI

By VGSources Team 12 min read

The reliable way to make a small game prototype with generative AI is to keep the game tiny, choose one core interaction, ask for one change at a time, and play-test after every meaningful edit. For a first project, a 2D action loop in Godot is the easiest scope to control. If you specifically want an integrated assistant that can help with scripts, scenes, and placeholder assets, Unity offers a separate AI-guided route, including an official character-customization prototype lesson.

AI can draft code, explain engine concepts, and produce prototype material. It cannot guarantee correct code, a finished game, performance, or commercial rights to generated content. You remain responsible for running the project, inspecting changes, and checking the terms that apply before distribution.

Start with a one-sentence prototype brief

Write the smallest playable idea before opening an engine. A useful brief names the control, the challenge, the feedback, and the ending condition:

This brief is deliberately narrow. It describes one player action, one obstacle type, one success metric and one repeatable loop. It does not promise a story, inventory, multiple levels, online play, procedural worlds or a large art set. Those can be experiments after the first loop works.

Turn the sentence into four checks:

  • Control: the player can move the character with a clearly defined input.
  • Challenge: an object or opponent creates a risk the player must respond to.
  • Feedback: the screen communicates movement, danger and score.
  • End and restart: a collision or timer ends the run, and the player can start again.

If a proposed feature does not improve one of those checks, defer it. A prototype is testing whether an interaction is promising, not proving that you can build a complete commercial game.

Choose the smallest route that answers your question

Use the route that matches what you are trying to learn. Godot’s official “Your first 2D game” tutorial builds a complete small action game with player movement, enemy spawning and scoring. It uses the example “Dodge the Creeps!” and includes code and tutorial assets. Godot explicitly recommends starting with 2D when you are new to game development or unfamiliar with Godot because 3D projects tend to be more complicated; the tutorial still assumes some programming experience. Read the Godot 2D tutorial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unity’s route is useful when the experiment is primarily about an integrated AI workflow or a 3D presentation. Unity Learn has an official lesson that creates a character-customization screen and uses Unity AI for assistance, animations, textures, materials, sprites and generated sound. That lesson requires Unity 6.2 or later. Open the Unity Learn setup lesson.

Route Best fit What the official material demonstrates Important caveat
Godot 2D A short action loop with movement, hazards and scoring A complete tutorial project, code samples and downloadable tutorial assets The latest documentation page warns that it may describe unstable features, and the tutorial assumes some programming experience.
Unity with Unity AI A prototype where built-in assistance and generated presentation assets are central A character-customization screen in Unity Learn, plus documented code and asset-generation features The AI suite is described as an open beta; setup, access, versions and terms can change.

The sources do not establish a controlled comparison of cost, speed, performance or beginner success rates. Choose based on scope, setup tolerance and the kind of prototype you need to evaluate, rather than assuming one engine is universally faster.

Route A: build a 2D action loop in Godot

1. Create the project and player scene

Follow the project-creation and scene-structure sections of Godot’s tutorial before asking AI to add features. The tutorial separates the player, enemy, main scene and HUD, which gives you clear places to inspect when something breaks. Start with a simple player graphic or one of the tutorial assets; visual polish is not needed to test movement.

Make the player scene responsible for its own movement and collision. Keep the main scene responsible for spawning hazards, tracking the run and deciding when the game ends. A small separation like this makes an AI-generated change easier to review: you can tell whether a bug belongs to input, collision, spawning or game-state code.

2. Get movement working without enemies

Define the input actions, connect them to the player and run the scene. Test left, right and any intended boundary behavior before adding a challenge. If the character does not move, do not ask for enemy spawning yet; give the AI the exact player script, the input action names and the error message, then request one diagnosis.

A useful prompt is:

Engine: Godot, current project version: [version].
Goal: move the player horizontally with the existing left and right input actions.
Relevant scene/script: [paste the player script and node tree].
Constraints: keep the current node names; do not add new systems.
Return: explain the likely cause, show the smallest code change, and list a manual test.

Replace the bracketed variables with your actual project details. Keep the template inside a code block so the engine and the AI do not confuse placeholders with literal code.

3. Add one hazard and a failure condition

Use the tutorial’s enemy-spawning pattern as a reference, then add only one hazard type. Verify that it appears at a predictable location, moves toward the play area and has a collision shape that matches its visible body. A sprite that looks dangerous but has an oversized collision shape creates a design problem, not an AI problem.

Ask for one bounded change at a time: first spawn a hazard, then move it, then detect the collision, then end the run. Include the relevant scene tree and script in each request. Do not paste an entire unrelated project unless the AI needs it; smaller context makes unintended edits easier to spot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Add score, HUD and restart

Once the player can fail, add a single score rule, such as points for time survived or hazards avoided. Display the value in a HUD label. Then add an explicit game-over state and a restart action. The official Godot tutorial presents project setup, player coding, enemies, the main scene, HUD and finishing steps as one complete loop, so it is a useful checklist for what “playable” means in this scope. Use the tutorial’s sequence as a reference.

Test the whole loop manually:

  1. Launch the project from the main scene.
  2. Move immediately and confirm the input responds.
  3. Allow a hazard to reach the player.
  4. Check that the score changes according to the rule you wrote.
  5. Confirm the failure message or state appears.
  6. Restart without closing the editor and verify that the score and hazards reset.

5. Improve feel only after the loop survives testing

After the controls, collision, score and restart work, ask AI for small feel improvements: acceleration, a brief hit flash, a spawn-rate curve or a clearer HUD. Change one variable or system per request. Keep the original working version available so you can revert a change that makes the game less readable or less fun.

Route B: use Unity’s AI-guided workflow

What Unity AI can do

Unity’s documentation describes an in-editor assistant and generators for sprites, textures, materials, sounds, animations and terrain layers. See Unity’s “Get started with AI in Unity” documentation. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent evidence that generated code will be correct or that a particular asset will suit your game.

Unity’s May 5, 2026 overview describes three interaction styles:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ask: ask questions or request explanations without handing over a multi-step implementation.
  • Plan: have the tool present a proposed sequence before it acts, giving you a chance to review scope.
  • Agent: allow it to write scripts, modify scene components, create prefabs and verify changes, subject to the project’s access and configuration.

Use Ask while you are learning the project, Plan for a change that touches several objects, and Agent only when you can inspect and test the resulting files and scene. The article describes these as product features; its description is not a reliability guarantee. Read Unity’s May 5, 2026 beta overview.

Set up the project with the version and access the lesson expects

The Unity Learn example starts with a new Universal 3D project and specifies Unity 6.2 or later. Follow that lesson’s setup rather than assuming every Unity installation exposes the same AI controls. Check the Unity Learn prerequisite and setup steps.

Unity’s May 5, 2026 article describes the AI tools as an open beta for Unity 6.0 or later and says projects need to be linked to Unity Cloud. In that article, Unity Personal users receive 1,000 free credits for 14 days, while Pro, Enterprise and Industry users have access included with their subscriptions. Those are dated access terms, not permanent pricing or entitlement promises. Confirm the current plan, regional availability, account requirements and setup pages before starting a new project. Verify the current beta conditions with Unity.

Build a character-customization prototype in slices

The official lesson is a good bounded experiment: a player or mannequin, a small set of appearance choices and a screen that shows the result. Begin with a static scene and one selectable property, such as a material or accessory. Confirm that the selection changes the visible object before asking for animations, sounds or additional categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give the assistant project-specific context:

Unity version: [exact version].
Prototype goal: one character-customization screen with one selectable material.
Current objects: [scene hierarchy and component names].
Constraints: use the existing Universal Render Pipeline scene; do not rename objects.
Request: propose a plan first, identify files and components you will touch, and include a manual test.

Review the plan. If it includes unrelated systems, narrow the request before allowing an Agent-style action. After the change, inspect the scene hierarchy, serialized fields, generated scripts and console output. Then enter Play mode and make the selection several times, including switching back to the original option.

Use generated presentation assets selectively

Generate an asset only when it helps you answer the prototype question. For a customization screen, a temporary texture or material may make the choice legible; a complete character art set is unnecessary until the interaction is convincing. Unity’s documented categories include sprites, textures, materials, sounds, animations and terrain layers, and the Unity Learn example exercises several of them. Review the documented generation categories.

Ask for one asset with a clear role, dimensions or duration where applicable, and a style constraint that prevents accidental scope growth. Keep source prompts and generated files together in the project so you can identify what needs a rights review later. Replace a placeholder if it obscures the interaction, but do not polish assets that cannot yet be tested in a working loop.

Prompt generative AI so changes stay reviewable

Specific requests produce more inspectable results than “make me a game.” Include five things in every meaningful request:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Engine and exact version: Godot or Unity, plus the project version.
  2. Current state: the relevant script, scene hierarchy, component values or error text.
  3. Desired behavior: one observable change, such as “restart the run when the player presses R.”
  4. Constraints: existing names to preserve, systems not to touch and acceptable implementation limits.
  5. Verification: a short manual test and an explanation of assumptions.

Ask the tool to show a diff or identify every file it changed when that option exists. Read the code rather than accepting a confident explanation. AI may invent an API, use a version-incompatible property, omit a reference in the inspector or solve the wrong problem while producing plausible text.

Run and inspect the project after every meaningful change

“It generated successfully” is not the same as “the prototype works.” Treat editor messages and AI-reported verification as clues, then play the build yourself. Unity describes Agent mode as able to verify changes, but that feature does not replace your own interaction test. See the limits implied by Unity’s beta description.

Use this test pass after each change that affects behavior:

  • Controls: every intended input responds once, without stuck or duplicated actions.
  • Boundaries: the player cannot leave the intended play area unless that is deliberate.
  • Collision: visible bodies and collision shapes agree, and a hit occurs at a sensible distance.
  • State: score, selections and timers reset when a new run starts.
  • Failure or completion: the player can tell what happened and what action comes next.
  • Restart: repeating the run does not duplicate enemies, listeners, audio sources or UI.
  • Performance sanity: the editor and standalone build remain responsive during the short test.

Keep a short bug list with the exact reproduction steps. Give the AI one bug at a time, attach the smallest relevant context, and rerun the same reproduction steps after the fix. If a fix introduces a new symptom, revert it and ask for a narrower alternative instead of stacking more generated patches.

Use AI assets as prototype material, not automatic legal clearance

Generated content can be useful for testing readability, mood or feedback, but “generated” does not establish that you may redistribute it everywhere. Unity’s May 5, 2026 article states: “Developers are responsible for managing app store declarations and verifying usage rights for generated content.” Read the statement in context.

Before distributing a build, record:

  • which provider or engine feature produced each asset;
  • the date and account or plan used;
  • the prompt or source material, where your workflow retains it;
  • the applicable terms and any restrictions on commercial use, attribution, training data or redistribution;
  • the app-store or platform declarations required for generated content.

The available documentation does not settle rights for every generated output, provider, country or platform. If the terms are unclear, replace the asset with material whose license you can verify or keep the prototype private while you resolve the question. Do not use a recognizable character, logo, song or photograph merely because an AI tool produced a similar result.

Common failure modes and precise recovery steps

The AI changes too much

Restore the last working version, then ask for a plan that names only the files and objects required for the next behavior. Preserve existing node, GameObject, component and input names. A smaller diff is easier to test than a complete rewrite.

The code looks right but nothing happens

Check the object reference, scene instance, enabled component, input-map entry and console error before requesting another code sample. Tell the AI exactly which reference is null or which message appears. Ask it to explain the execution path from input to visible result, then test that path with a temporary log or on-screen value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generated art overwhelms the prototype

Replace the asset with a colored rectangle, primitive, plain material or short tone. If the interaction is no longer understandable, improve contrast and scale rather than adding more art. Return to generated assets only when they answer a specific presentation question.

The scope keeps expanding

Keep a “later” list outside the active task: extra enemies, shops, dialogue, save files, multiplayer and procedural generation can all wait. The next request should make the existing loop clearer, more responsive or easier to restart. If it cannot be tested in a few minutes, split it again.

When to expand the prototype

Expand only after a new player can understand the control, encounter the challenge, see feedback, reach the end state and restart without your explanation. Then choose one improvement category:

  • Feel: tune movement, timing, hit feedback or spawn pacing.
  • Readability: improve contrast, labels, sound cues and hazard telegraphing.
  • Variety: add one new hazard, option or pattern and test whether it changes decisions.
  • Presentation: replace the most distracting placeholder, not every placeholder.

After each expansion, return to the same controls, collision, state and restart checklist. A prototype that gains content while losing reliability is answering a less useful question than the smaller version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final pre-release checklist

  1. Play from a clean launch, not only from the currently open scene.
  2. Test the intended keyboard, controller or pointer input on the target platform.
  3. Trigger every failure, completion and restart path at least once.
  4. Inspect generated scripts, scene references, prefabs, materials and audio for unintended dependencies.
  5. Remove unused generated files and identify the source and terms for every asset you keep.
  6. Check current engine, AI-beta and platform requirements on the official pages immediately before distribution.
  7. Make the required app-store declarations and keep a record of your usage-rights review.

A small prototype is successful when it gives you a trustworthy answer about its central interaction. Generative AI can shorten the distance to that answer, but the creator’s narrow scope, inspection and repeated play-testing are what make the result dependable.
