Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Usually, no: installing a disc-based Xbox game does not remove the disc check, so you normally need the game disc in the drive to play. There is a newer exception for some Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs: Xbox may let you claim a limited digital license, then play without inserting the disc. Eligibility varies, and the license remains tied to continued possession of the qualifying disc.
Why an installed disc game still needs the disc
Installation and permission to play are separate. A disc can install game files to the console or prompt it to download them, but for ordinary disc play the console uses the disc to verify the license. Microsoft’s backward-compatibility instructions make this explicit for supported Xbox 360 and original Xbox games: the game downloads to storage, but the disc must remain in the drive to play.
So if you install a game from a disc and then remove it, expect the console to ask you to insert the disc before launching. The same applies if the game’s files came from a download initiated by the disc.
The exception: claim a disc-to-digital license
Microsoft now offers a disc-to-digital option for eligible Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs. On a supported Xbox console with an optical drive, insert a qualifying disc and follow the on-screen option to accept a digital license. Once claimed, the game appears in your library and can be played without the disc inserted. Xbox describes the feature as covering “thousands of titles,” but that is a broad launch description, not a published count of eligible games. See Xbox’s Series X information and its feature announcement.

Eligibility depends on the specific disc
Not every Xbox One or Series X disc qualifies. Microsoft says availability can depend on technical, licensing, publishing, or other factors and may change. Check the console’s prompt when you insert the disc; do not assume a particular title is eligible just because it is on one of those platforms.
Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs are not eligible for this conversion. Those discs can still play on supported backward-compatible consoles, but the disc must be inserted for the license check.

The digital license is still linked to the disc
Claiming the digital license does not turn the disc into an independent digital purchase. Microsoft’s Digital Goods usage rules state: “The digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc.” Microsoft may revalidate eligibility and suspend or revoke access if you no longer have the disc; the license cannot be transferred separately from it.
Which Xbox consoles can use discs?
| Console configuration | Can read a physical game disc? | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | No | Series S is digital-only. You cannot insert a game disc to install it or claim a disc-to-digital license. |
| Xbox Series X with an optical drive | Yes | It can play supported physical games and is the type of console needed to claim an eligible disc-to-digital license. |
| All-digital Xbox Series X configuration | No | It cannot read a physical disc. Use a separately owned digital copy or a digital entitlement already available to your account. |
Series X configurations differ, so check the exact model or product listing rather than relying on the “Series X” name alone. Microsoft describes the Series S as digital-only and distinguishes disc-drive and all-digital Series X configurations on its console page.

Does this work offline?
Offline play is a separate question from whether the disc is required. A disc does not guarantee that every game will run without an internet connection: some titles depend on online services, and others may need downloads. Microsoft’s 2013 policy update said Xbox One disc games would work offline after a one-time setup while still requiring the disc at the time. That statement is historical policy context, not a guarantee for every current game or for the newer disc-to-digital license. See Microsoft’s 2013 Xbox One policy update.
