Gaming PC Power Consumption: Desktop vs. Gaming Laptop

Gaming desktops often draw more power than laptops, but actual use depends on the system, game and setup. Learn how to measure watts and estimate cost.

Gaming desktops often draw more power than gaming laptops during play, but there is no single wattage that applies to every system. A California Energy Commission project report published in 2021 found average gameplay power of 34–410 watts among the desktops it tested and 21–212 watts among its tested laptops. Those are study results, not universal estimates for current gaming PCs. Your game, settings, hardware, displays and accessories all affect the result.

How much power do gaming desktops and laptops use?

The tested systems in the California Energy Commission project report averaged between 34 and 410 watts during gameplay for desktops, and between 21 and 212 watts for laptops. The breadth of those ranges matters as much as the comparison: the report measured particular systems and games, not every model on sale today. A separate European gaming energy-efficiency project also found wide variation within both categories, reporting roughly 12-fold variation among tested desktops and 10-fold among tested laptops; its surfaced report result does not establish a publication date.

These figures are not a like-for-like verdict on every desktop and laptop. Different game titles, graphics settings, frame rates, and system configurations can change power draw substantially. To compare two machines use the same workload, and be clear about whether the measurement includes the display and peripherals.

What counts as the power use of a gaming setup?

A laptop normally has its screen built in, while a desktop gaming setup typically requires a separate monitor. A laptop connected to an external display or dock adds those devices to its total as well. Decide whether you want to compare the computers alone or the complete setups, and count the same kinds of equipment on both sides.

For an estimate of your full gaming setup, include the monitor, dock and any other equipment you want to account for. For a computer-only comparison, measure the computer separately where practical and state that displays are excluded. U.S. Department of Energy guidance notes that external displays and docks can increase notebook power use; Intel’s buying guide also discusses laptop and desktop form-factor trade-offs.

How to measure your own gaming PC’s power use

  1. Choose the scope. Decide whether the reading should cover only the computer or the whole setup. Include the desktop monitor and peripherals for a full desktop total, and count any external display or dock used with the laptop.
  2. Match the workload. Run the same game with the same graphics settings and frame-rate target on each system. Use a representative gaming session and record its duration. Measure idle, sleep or off modes separately if those matter to your comparison.
  3. Measure at the wall. A plug-in electricity usage meter can show the draw of the equipment connected through it. Treat the result as a reading for your system under those conditions, not a universal benchmark. ECMA-383 sets out a procedure for measuring desktop and notebook computer power and energy use across operating modes.
  4. Record average watts and session length. A brief reading may not capture a whole session’s variation, so use a representative period and note what you measured.
  5. Convert the result to energy. Multiply average watts by hours used, then divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours (kWh).
  6. Estimate the cost. Multiply kWh by your electricity price per kWh, using the rate on your bill. The result is an estimate for the measured usage and rate.

How to calculate gaming electricity cost

Use these formulas:

  • Energy (kWh) = average power (watts) × hours ÷ 1,000
  • Estimated cost = energy (kWh) × your electricity price per kWh

For example, if a measured setup averages 200 watts during a two-hour session, it uses 0.4 kWh for that session. Multiply 0.4 by your own electricity rate to estimate the session’s energy cost. This calculation does not predict annual spending unless you also make realistic assumptions about how often and how long you play.

DOE’s published example annual-cost table uses an 11¢/kWh energy price at federal facilities as of July 2024, assumes a four-year product life, and draws on ENERGY STAR product-list data as of December 2024. Those are procurement-example assumptions, not a current household rate or a gaming-PC cost estimate.

Which form factor makes sense for your gaming?

Energy use is only one part of the choice. DOE guidance says notebooks tend to be more energy efficient because they are designed around battery power, but the complete setup can draw more when you add a dock or external display. Intel’s buying guide describes laptops as portable and generally less upgradeable, while desktops are more modular and can offer advantages for high-end components and thermal considerations. That manufacturer guidance is not an independent performance benchmark.

  • Compare energy use on your terms by matching games and settings, setting the same frame-rate goal, and counting equivalent displays and accessories.

ENERGY STAR says certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models through efficient components and better energy management while idle. This is broad computer-category guidance, not a gaming-specific comparison between desktops and laptops. Its computer information lists an effective date of October 2025; certification criteria cover multiple operating modes, power management and efficient power supplies.
