Possibly—if the game is a participating digital title installed on a compatible device, and the game and device can run without a live connection. Xbox Play Anywhere does not itself provide internet or power, and an offline session’s save will not sync to another device until the device reconnects. Whether it would work in a particular Canadian ice fishing hut depends on the game, hardware, power and connectivity there; those details are not established here.
What Xbox Play Anywhere lets you do
Xbox Play Anywhere is for participating digital games. An eligible purchase from the Xbox Store or Windows Store can be played on supported Xbox consoles, Windows PCs and supported gaming handhelds without buying the game again for each device. A digital code bought from a participating retailer can also qualify. Disc games do not. Check the game’s Play Anywhere badge or the official Xbox Play Anywhere page before relying on the feature.

Sign in with the Xbox/Microsoft account that owns the game. The eligible title should appear as installable on Xbox and in the PC app library. The same game can be signed in on only one console, one PC or one supported handheld at a time.

Does Xbox Play Anywhere work offline?
Play Anywhere is not the same thing as streaming: a locally installed PC version runs on the PC rather than being streamed from an Xbox. But the program rules do not guarantee that every game can launch or remain playable offline. Check the selected game’s requirements and any connection or sign-in needs set by its publisher. The general Play Anywhere entitlement alone is not enough to promise offline play.

Save synchronization is a separate issue. Microsoft says its game-save system stores data locally and synchronizes it to the cloud when the device connects to the internet. So an offline session may create or update a local save, but do not expect that progress to appear on another device until the first device reconnects and the save has synchronized. Confirm the save is up to date before switching devices. Microsoft’s Game Saves overview explains this synchronization behavior.
Local play, Remote Play and cloud streaming are different

Remote Play and cloud gaming rely on a network connection. Neither establishes whether a particular hut has usable signal. For a trip where connectivity is uncertain, local installation is the relevant setup to investigate—but check the game’s own offline behavior rather than assuming it.

Check the device and game before leaving
Xbox Canada lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher for PC play through its PC app. That is an app-level baseline, not a guarantee that every game will run on every PC. Microsoft advises checking the particular publisher’s minimum requirements, and Xbox notes that system needs and performance vary by game. A Windows gaming handheld may also be a Play Anywhere device, but verify that both the handheld and chosen title are supported. See Xbox on PC and Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules.
- Choose the game. Look for the Play Anywhere badge in the store or confirm it on the official list. Do not infer eligibility from a game having Xbox and PC versions.
- Check ownership and account. Use the account that owns the eligible digital game. A disc copy does not qualify for Play Anywhere.
- Install and test at home. Install the relevant version on the device you plan to bring, sign in, and check the game’s publisher requirements and behavior. If you intend to move between devices, confirm the save has synchronized before departure.
- Plan power and connectivity separately. The Play Anywhere rules do not specify a hut’s power supply, battery runtime or network coverage. Confirm the actual arrangements for the location and device rather than treating them as part of the feature.
- After playing offline, reconnect before switching devices. Allow the save to synchronize, then verify the updated progress is available on the next device.
What Canadian game listings can and cannot tell you
The Canadian Microsoft Store’s Play Anywhere-filtered catalog is a live listing, not a fixed inventory. It can help identify eligible games, but titles and availability may change; check the current Canadian catalog before choosing a game. Fishing Planet appeared among the catalog entries reported in 2025 research, but that does not establish it as the game for any specific hut trip.

Xbox Wire reported more than 1,000 Play Anywhere games on July 28, 2025. That is a dated figure, not a verified count for 2026. For an individual game, the badge or current catalog is more useful than a broad historical total.

The feature can make one eligible digital purchase usable across supported devices, with progress designed to carry across them after save synchronization. It cannot by itself answer whether a particular trip will work: the deciding details are the title’s offline and hardware requirements, the device’s compatibility, the account and installation state, and the hut’s actual power and network conditions. Without those specifics, a report of a successful or failed hut test would be guesswork.
