Sometimes, but there is no reliable way to guarantee that cryptocurrency sent to a scammer will be returned. Contact the exchange or crypto ATM operator you used immediately and ask whether it can stop or reverse the transfer. Preserve the transaction details, report the scam, and be wary of anyone who promises recovery for an upfront fee.
What to do immediately
- Contact the sending exchange or crypto ATM operator. Use contact details from its official website or app. Explain that the transfer was fraudulent and ask whether it can stop or reverse it. This is worth trying, but it is not a guaranteed remedy. The FTC’s cryptocurrency scam guidance recommends contacting the company used to send the money.
- Preserve the evidence. Save the transaction ID or hash, the sending and receiving wallet addresses, cryptocurrency type and amount, and the date and time. Keep receipts, screenshots, messages, platform URLs, usernames, phone numbers, and email addresses. Do not delete messages or wallet records.
- Report the scam. In the United States, submit reports to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and the FTC’s ReportFraud.ftc.gov. You can also contact local police and your state attorney general.
- Secure any affected accounts. If the scam involved a compromised exchange account or stolen credentials, contact the exchange through its independently verified website or phone number, change passwords, and secure the account. Do not follow links or instructions in unsolicited messages claiming to be exchange staff.
- Report follow-up recovery pitches too. Include the caller’s or sender’s name, handle, wallet address, payment demand, and any claim of government or law-firm affiliation. The FBI asks reporters to provide information about how the person contacted them as well as financial transaction details.
What information to include in a report
The FBI says useful transaction details include the cryptocurrency addresses, amount and type of cryptocurrency, date and time, and transaction ID or hash. Add a clear account of how the scam began, what the scammer said, and where you sent funds. Attach or retain copies of relevant receipts and communications.

- Sending and receiving wallet addresses
- Transaction hash or ID
- Cryptocurrency type and amount
- Date and time of each transfer
- Scammer’s contact details, usernames, platform URLs, and payment instructions
- Messages, screenshots, receipts, and any subsequent recovery-service offers
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s reporting guidance lists the FBI, FTC, state attorney general, and local police as possible contacts. Use trusted official websites and phone numbers to reach agencies and financial institutions, rather than contact details supplied by an unsolicited message.
Why recovery is uncertain
Cryptocurrency payments do not have the same legal protections as credit- or debit-card payments, and the FTC advises consumers to ask the sending exchange or ATM operator whether a transaction can be reversed. Whether a platform can act depends on the circumstances, including where the funds went and whether an account can be identified or frozen. The cited government guidance does not provide a general recovery success rate.

Tracing a transfer is not the same as recovering it. A tracing report does not itself return assets or authorize anyone to seize them. The FBI warns that some fraudulent recovery firms provide incomplete or inaccurate tracing reports and then demand additional fees.
Possible routes—and what they can and cannot do
| Route | What it may do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Sending exchange or crypto ATM operator | May be able to advise whether it can stop or reverse the transfer. | The FTC presents this as an action to try, not a promise of reversal or repayment. |
| Exchange account freeze | An exchange may freeze an account under its internal processes or in response to legal process. | A freeze is not guaranteed, and it does not by itself establish that funds will be returned. |
| Law-enforcement report | Gives authorities transaction and contact information that may be relevant to an investigation. | Filing a report is not a guarantee that the funds will be recovered. |
| Civil litigation | The FBI identifies litigation as an option victims may choose to pursue. | Whether it is available or useful depends on the facts and jurisdiction; the FBI advisory does not promise success. |
The FBI’s IC3 advisory states: “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” That distinction matters: a private tracing service cannot compel an exchange to freeze or return assets.

How to recognize a recovery scam
People who have already lost money may be targeted again through social media, messaging platforms, advertisements, search results, and comments on cryptocurrency content. A purported recovery service may demand payment upfront, claim it has special access to law enforcement or courts, provide a weak tracing report, or ask for more money after the first payment.
