To install and play a disc-based game, the destination console must have a compatible disc drive and you must insert the original game disc. For PS4-to-PS5 and PS5-to-PS5 moves, Sony’s same-network Data Transfer is the direct option; saved progress has separate transfer methods.
What transfers—and what does not
Console data transfer can copy game data and other supported content to the destination. For a disc-based game, Sony instructs you to insert the disc in the destination console to install the game. The disc remains necessary to play that copy; transferring its data does not create a digital license. Sony’s transfer guide covers the process and eligible data.

Make sure the destination hardware can read the disc. A PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive cannot use PS4 Blu-ray game discs. Sony says supported PS4 disc games can run on a PS5 with a disc drive, but some PS4 games may not be playable on PS5. Check the specific title using Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility information. Sony’s US PlayStation page reports more than 4,000 PS4 games ready to play on PS4 and PS5; that count is not a guarantee that every title works. PlayStation 5

- On the PS4, sign in with the account you plan to use on the PS5. Install the latest system software and synchronize trophies.
- Connect the PS4 and PS5 to the same network. If both usually use Wi-Fi, connecting them with a LAN cable can make the transfer faster; the cable is optional.
- On the PS5, follow the transfer prompts during initial setup. If setup is complete, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep both consoles powered on and do not change their network settings while the transfer is running. Sony warns that interrupting the process in these ways may damage or lose data.
- For a disc-based game, insert its disc into the PS5 with a disc drive to install it. Keep the disc available to play.
Data already saved on the destination console does not transfer over, so do not assume this process will merge all existing files. Sony also notes that a child account cannot transfer during the destination console’s initial setup. Finish setup first, or use an adult account during initial setup and transfer both accounts then. Move data from one PS5 to another PS5
Sony supports transferring data from a PS5 to another PS5. Sign in with the same account and use the destination console’s transfer prompts, following the instructions in the transfer guide. Supported categories include games playable on PS5, saved data, user and account information, screenshots, clips, and console settings. To install a disc-based game on the new console, insert its disc; transferring data does not remove the disc requirement.

For details on extended storage and saves, use Sony’s transfer guide and Sony’s extended-storage instructions. If the old console is unavailable, cloud storage may help with saves if you have uploaded them, and USB can provide game data if you already have it on a compatible extended-storage drive. Neither method supplies a digital license for a disc-based game.

Before you start
- Check that the new console has a disc drive if you want to use a Blu-ray game disc.
- Confirm the particular game is compatible with the destination console; compatibility is not universal.
- Sign in with the account associated with the data you want to transfer.
- Decide whether you need installed game data, saved progress, or both; they may require different steps.
- If using USB extended storage, distinguish it from a regular USB drive used to copy PS4 saves. PS5 saved data cannot be copied to USB.
