Generally, no: once a gem is placed in a socket, it cannot be removed or restored. You can replace it with another gem, but the original is destroyed when you finalize the replacement. If you are unsure, leave the current gem in place.
What happens when you socket a gem?
Blizzard Support’s US search listing for “Socketed Wrong Gem in Item” states: “Once a gem is placed into a socket, it cannot be removed or restored.” Its listing showed an update five months before capture. The support article itself redirected to a Battle.net login, so this answer relies on the accessible official listing rather than a claim of personal testing.
There is no ordinary undo, and Blizzard’s published guidance does not promise that Customer Support can recover a gem after socketing.
Can you replace the gem?
Yes. You can place a different gem in the same socket, but doing so consumes the gem already there. The replacement changes the socket’s effect; it does not return the old gem to your inventory. Confirm your choice before finalizing the new socketing.

What about Jewelhammer’s Focus?
Warcraft Wiki’s socket reference names Jewelhammer’s Focus as a removal method, which appears to conflict with Blizzard’s broad support guidance. The reference does not establish that it works in current Retail or that it is generally obtainable. Treat it as a possible version- or item-specific exception, not as a reliable general solution; check the item and game version before relying on it.
Blizzard’s Burning Crusade manual explains historical gem socketing and socket bonuses, but it does not establish current gem-removal behavior.

Can an addon recover a gem?
No recovery feature is established for Domination Socket Helper. Its Retail listing describes socket-interface features and one-click replacement, which may make socketing more convenient, but it is not presented as a way to restore a consumed gem.
