Yes: a Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card can be physically passed to another person and used on another console, and its game can be started offline after the game data has been downloaded. The card is only a key, not the full game, so the new console needs an internet connection and enough storage for its own download. The card must stay inserted while playing.
What a game-key card contains
A Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card is different from a standard game card: it does not contain the full game data. Instead, it provides the key used to download that data over the internet. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download it. The required storage space is indicated on the game’s packaging. Nintendo’s game-key card overview

Can you resell or lend one?
In practical terms, yes: you can hand the physical card to someone else. Nintendo says a game-key card can be used on another console, and playing requires the card to be inserted. The recipient must download the game data to their own console before its first launch there; the card does not carry an installed copy from one console to another. Nintendo’s published guidance supports physical transfer, but does not describe a dedicated game-key-card lending feature or state a specific resale policy or legal rule. Can you play a game-key card offline?
After the initial download, Nintendo says the game can be started without an internet connection. Keep the game-key card inserted in the console while playing; downloading the data does not make the card optional. Offline availability applies to starting the installed game, not necessarily every mode or feature. A title may require an internet connection for online play or other internet-dependent functions. Nintendo’s president described the same first-download and subsequent-play distinction in the company’s 2025 shareholder Q&A, Q16.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What changes when you move the card to another console?
The game data must be downloaded on each console where it is played for the first time. Nintendo says save data is stored in the console, not on the game-key card, so passing on the card does not pass along the previous player’s save file. The recipient needs access to sufficient storage on the console or a microSD Express card, as well as an internet connection for that download.
Before lending, selling, or taking the game offline
- Check the packaging for the game’s required storage space.
- Make sure the console has enough internal storage or microSD Express storage for the download.
- Download the game data before relying on offline play.
- Keep the game-key card inserted whenever playing.
- Check the specific game’s online requirements if you need a particular mode or feature to work without internet.
Why Nintendo uses game-key cards
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said game-key cards are one of the distribution methods introduced to accommodate larger game-data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 compared with Nintendo Switch. That is Nintendo’s stated rationale for the format. In the same 2025 Q&A, Furukawa explained: “The game-key card used for Nintendo Switch 2 does not contain the full game data for the game itself; instead, it stores a key to activate the software. An internet connection is required for downloading the data for the game the first time you play it. Subsequent gameplay does not require an internet connection, but the game-key card must be inserted into the system.”

- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn includes bonus in-game content (delivered via an online update) and a set of collectible stickers. This edition also includes a Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card.
