To judge a handheld gaming PC’s upscaling support, check the exact model and processor, the upscaler’s implementation, which games support it, the screen’s native resolution, and the power conditions behind performance claims. A processor that supports an upscaling technology does not make that technology available in every game.
Start with the upscaler, not the feature label
“Upscaling support” can refer to different things. AMD describes FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) as in-game upscaling and frame generation. Its product documentation says FSR versions 1, 2, 3, and 4 are available only in select games, require integration by the game developer, and work on select AMD products. Check both the game’s settings and the handheld’s documentation; an FSR-capable processor alone does not establish that a particular game can use FSR. AMD Ryzen Z-series product documentation

Check whether driver-level scaling offers another route
ASUS describes Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) as driver-level scaling for games where in-game FSR is unavailable. Its ROG Ally FAQ says to set a game to 720p to upscale the image to 1080p; it also says RSR does not affect a game already set to 1080p. These instructions describe ASUS’s implementation on the Ally, not a universal control path for every handheld or operating system. Check the exact device’s software documentation for its own behavior. ASUS ROG Ally FAQ
Match the game’s render resolution to the handheld screen
Compare the handheld’s native panel resolution with the resolution at which the game renders. Lowering render resolution may improve performance, but it also changes the image the upscaler must reconstruct. Feature names do not establish how a specific game will look at a particular setting. ASUS announced the original ROG Ally with a 120 Hz, 1920×1080 touchscreen; that is a model-specific example, not a specification for every Ally or handheld. ASUS ROG Ally launch announcement

Verify the exact processor and configuration
AMD lists handheld processors in its Ryzen Z1 and Z2 families with different graphics architectures and specifications. A processor family can help identify the hardware, but it does not settle whether a particular game integrates FSR or whether the device’s software exposes a driver-level alternative. Confirm the exact processor and SKU on the product listing, then verify support in the relevant game and device documentation. AMD Ryzen Z-series product documentation
Read performance claims with their power conditions
Handheld performance depends on the selected power mode and whether the device is plugged in. ASUS lists 10W Silent, 15W Performance, and 25W Turbo modes for the Ally X, with Turbo reaching 30W when connected to AC. Those are Ally X specifications, not settings or results to assume for another model. ASUS ROG Ally X product page

ASUS’s published test notes specify Windows 11, a 120 Hz 1920×1080 display, Turbo at 30W, and the device plugged in with 65W power delivery. ASUS also notes that scores vary with configuration and newer drivers. Treat those figures as manufacturer results under the stated plugged-in conditions, not as a prediction of battery performance. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInclude operating system and software tools in the check
The software environment can affect which scaling options are available. Lenovo describes FSR and band-limited pixel scaling on SteamOS models of Legion Go S. That claim is specific to the SteamOS configuration; do not assume another operating system or model variant exposes the same tools. Confirm the operating system and exact configuration when comparing listings. Lenovo Legion Go S product information

Use this checklist when comparing handhelds
- Identify the exact model, processor, and configuration—not just the product family.
- Find out whether the claimed upscaler is game-integrated, driver-level, or both.
- Check whether the games you play support the relevant in-game option.
- Compare native screen resolution with the game’s render resolution and available scaling options.
- Verify the operating system, driver tools, and device-specific controls.
- Record the power mode and plugged-in or battery conditions attached to any performance claim.
Vendor documentation establishes feature descriptions and product specifications, but it does not provide a controlled cross-device comparison of image quality, frame rates, or battery life. Those outcomes should not be inferred from feature names or manufacturer test results alone.
