Can You Resell or Share a Physical Game After Redeeming Its Digital Bonus?

Usually, yes: redeeming a separate digital bonus does not by itself prevent you from selling or lending the physical disc or cartridge. The code or account-linked entitlement normally stays with the account that redeemed it, however. A buyer should not be promised a bonus whose code has already been used or whose entitlement cannot transfer.

Whether the physical game may be resold or shared also depends on the platform, publisher terms, edition, region and local law. Treat the disc or cartridge and the digital bonus as two different things, then verify the rules for the exact copy.

The physical game and the digital bonus are separate rights

A disc or cartridge is a tangible item you can hand to another person. A download code, season pass, cosmetic item or other digital bonus is normally a license or entitlement recorded against a platform account. Redeeming the code changes the status of that digital entitlement; it does not rewrite who physically possesses the disc.

Microsoft’s official Digital Goods Rules use the formulation “All Digital Goods are licensed, not sold.” Xbox code support likewise describes redemption to a Microsoft account. In practical terms, the account that redeemed the code is the account associated with the bonus. Handing over the game media does not normally move that entitlement to the recipient’s account.

That separation explains the usual outcome: you can pass on the physical game, but you must describe it as a used copy without a transferable bonus unless you can verify that the bonus remains unused and is intended for the buyer’s region and platform.

What happens when a bonus code is redeemed?

A redeemed code is no longer a fresh code

One-time codes are consumed when the platform accepts them. Nintendo’s support guidance says that a code reporting as already used has been redeemed and directs users to check their eShop purchase history; it also warns that the code’s region matters. A seller should therefore never list an already-redeemed code as included, even if the printed card is still in the box.

An account-linked entitlement stays with the redeeming account

Some bonuses are granted directly to the account that enters the code. The recipient of the disc may be able to play the base game, but will not automatically receive that account’s downloadable content, currency, soundtrack or other reward. Removing the code card from the box does not change this result.

Content included on the physical media is different

An edition may place bonus content on the disc or cartridge instead of using a one-time code. In that case, the media may carry the content to its next user, subject to the game’s license and platform rules. Packaging, the edition name and the publisher’s instructions are the only reliable way to tell which delivery method applies; the title of the game alone is not enough.

Identify the bonus type before you sell or share the copy

Bonus delivery What redemption or transfer means What the next owner can be promised
Separate, one-time printed code Once redeemed, the code is consumed and tied to the redeeming platform account. The physical game, but no bonus unless a verifiably unused code is included.
Account-linked digital entitlement The entitlement remains associated with the account that claimed it. Access to the physical game only; the account owner should not be represented as transferring the entitlement.
Bonus content included on the disc or cartridge The content is present on the physical media rather than dependent on a new code. The content available from that media, subject to applicable software terms and regional compatibility.
Boxed product containing only a code There is no physical game to pass on after the code is redeemed. No unused digital product if the code has already been claimed.

Keep the packaging while you check. A “deluxe,” “collector’s” or “limited” label can describe several different combinations of physical and digital items. Read the insert, the back of the box and the publisher’s edition description, and do not infer transferability from the edition name.

Platform and regional terms can change the answer

PlayStation terms are region-specific

PlayStation’s UK Software Usage Terms identify disc-based software and state that resale requires express authorisation, including authorisation from the publisher when it is a separate company. That is a UK rule example, not a worldwide statement. A seller in another country must consult the terms that apply to that country and edition.

PlayStation’s US Terms of Service separately describe Store purchases as personal-use licenses that are generally not transferable, while physical purchases have separate terms. The distinction means a rule about digital Store items cannot automatically settle a question about a used disc, and a UK restriction cannot be generalized to every market.

Microsoft and Xbox rules cover licenses and special cases

Microsoft’s Digital Goods Rules describe digital goods as licensed and explain account and device permissions. They also discuss a disc-to-digital situation in which continued access depends on keeping the qualifying disc. That is a specific mechanism, not a universal rule for every Xbox title or every resale.

If the copy is an Xbox package with a separate code, check whether the code is unused and whether it redeems in the buyer’s region. Do not assume that the existence of a disc makes an associated digital item transferable.

Nintendo codes require both redemption status and region matching

Nintendo’s support material treats an “already used” download code as redeemed and tells the user to verify the related purchase in eShop history. Nintendo also notes that codes are region-sensitive. A code that works for the original owner may still be unusable by a buyer whose account or console is set to a different region.

These platform examples establish why there is no single worldwide yes-or-no rule. The publisher’s game-specific terms, the platform agreement, the edition and the law where the transaction occurs all matter.

Checklist for a seller

  1. Confirm the item is physical. Make sure you have a disc or cartridge, not a box that contained only a download code.
  2. Record the exact identity. Note the platform, title, edition, region marking and publisher. Different editions of the same game can use different bonus systems.
  3. Locate every bonus reference. Check inserts, stickers, receipts and the packaging description for wording such as “download code,” “redeemable,” or “included on disc.”
  4. Determine redemption status. If you entered a code, treat it as used. For Nintendo purchases, the eShop purchase history can confirm that the content appears on the redeeming account. Comparable account histories or support pages on other platforms may provide confirmation.
  5. Do not test an unused code casually. Entering it to see whether it works can consume the one-time entitlement and make the copy less valuable to a buyer.
  6. Read current terms. Check the platform agreement, the publisher’s terms for that edition and the resale rules in your jurisdiction. Terms can change, so use the current versions.
  7. Separate transferable from non-transferable items. Keep account-linked content on your account and remove it from the advertised contents. The buyer receives the media and anything that genuinely travels with it.
  8. Write the listing precisely. State the platform and edition, say whether the bonus code is unused, used or absent, and avoid promising access to content tied to your account.

How to describe the copy accurately

A clear listing makes the physical item and the bonus status unmistakable. For example:

Rank #2
Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
Physical game disc, [platform and edition as printed on the case]. Disc tested and included. The original bonus download code was redeemed and is not included as an available benefit. Buyer receives the disc, case and manual only.

When the code is genuinely unused, say so only if you can support that statement and the region is clear:

Physical game cartridge, [platform and regional edition]. Bonus code card is present and has not been redeemed. Code availability and regional compatibility should be confirmed before purchase.

Avoid phrases such as “complete with all DLC,” “bonus included” or “digital extras guaranteed” when the content was claimed on your account. Keeping a used card in the case does not make the code available.

What a buyer should ask before paying

  • Is the item a disc or cartridge, or is it a code-only package?
  • What exact platform, edition and region are shown on the case or cartridge?
  • Was any printed code redeemed, and can the seller state that in writing?
  • Is the advertised bonus on the physical media or delivered through an account code?
  • Does the listing promise only the physical game, or does it make a separate claim about digital content?

If the seller cannot establish that a code is unused, value the copy as though the code is unavailable. A photograph of an intact card proves only that the card exists; it does not prove that the entitlement remains unused or will work in your region.

Sharing a game is not the same as transferring its bonus

Lending a disc or cartridge to a friend and selling it are different transactions, but the digital distinction is the same. The friend may use the physical media where the platform and software terms allow, while the redeemed bonus remains with the original account. Do not represent a temporary loan as a way to give someone your account-linked DLC.

If the bonus is embedded on the media, the friend may receive that content with the disc or cartridge. If it was a one-time code, sharing the physical copy does not create a second redemption. Keep the claim limited to what the recipient can actually access from the media.

Common problem cases and the appropriate response

The code says “already used”

Stop advertising it as available. For Nintendo, check eShop purchase history to confirm where the content was credited. On other platforms, use the platform’s account history or support process. The correct remedy for a listing is to disclose that the code is redeemed, not to give the buyer access to your account.

The buyer’s region does not match

Region differences can block a code even when it has never been redeemed. State the region printed on the package and tell the buyer to verify compatibility before purchase. Do not promise that changing a console’s region will make every code valid.

The package mixes a disc with a digital-only item

Many editions combine a playable disc with a code for an add-on. Treat each component separately: the disc is the physical item, while the code follows the account and region rules. List the disc and the code status as separate lines.

A disc-to-digital feature is involved

Microsoft’s rules describe at least one case where digital access depends on retaining a qualifying disc. That condition is specific to the feature described in the rules. Do not apply it to unrelated games, and do not promise ongoing digital access after the qualifying disc is gone unless the current terms expressly allow it.

The buyer expected a “complete” edition

Resolve the dispute by comparing the listing with the actual contents. If the code was used, the accurate description should have excluded it. A seller who clearly states “physical game only; bonus code redeemed” gives the buyer a materially different and safer expectation than a seller who calls the copy complete.

A practical decision rule

Before handing over the copy, answer four questions in order: What exactly is physical? What exactly was redeemed? Which platform, publisher, region and edition terms apply? What can the recipient access without your account? If the answer to the last question is only the disc or cartridge, sell or share it on that basis and leave the redeemed digital bonus with the original account.
