The reliable method is a three-part workflow: disable licensed music in the game when a streamer mode or music-mute option exists, route game audio and your microphone as separate sources or tracks, and deliberately stop, hide, or edit around graphic scenes. Then watch the finished file before publishing. Platform detection can mute a recording, but it does not give you permission to use the audio, and no universal recorder can automatically recognize every graphic scene.
Options differ by game, platform and version. Treat the controls below as a checklist for finding the setting in your title, not as a promise that every game has the same menu.

What this workflow protects you from—and what it cannot do
Copyrighted music and graphic imagery are separate problems. A music mute may remove a licensed song while leaving a violent cutscene in the video. Cropping or blurring a cutscene does nothing to change the rights status of the soundtrack. Plan an audio control and a visual-content control independently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is also a crucial legal distinction between not recording a song and having permission to record it. A streaming subscription, a purchased download, or a physical copy lets you listen under its terms; it does not normally grant permission to synchronize that recording with your gameplay and distribute it in a video-on-demand archive. Twitch states this directly in its muted-audio guidance: “Buying a copy of the audio, whether in the form of a digital download, CD, vinyl record, or other format, does not give you permission to make the audio available in a VOD on Twitch.”

The practical goal is therefore to keep the unwanted material out of the published mix, retain evidence of what you recorded, and check the rules of the service where you will upload it. A platform’s automated action is not a license or a guarantee against a later rights-holder complaint.
Start with the game’s own settings
Open the game’s audio, accessibility, online, or streamer settings before opening your recorder. Search the official support site and the game’s current license or EULA for terms such as streamer mode, licensed music, copyrighted audio, content filter, and broadcast mode. Publisher documentation is more authoritative than a generic recording tutorial because the game knows which songs and scenes it can replace or suppress.
Sea of Thieves: mute copyrighted audio
Sea of Thieves documents a title-specific control at Game Options > Settings > Streamer Mode Support > Mute Copyrighted Audio. Enable it before you begin a session, then make a short local recording and listen for menu music, tavern music, emotes, and cutscenes—not just the background track during normal play. The same support guidance describes options to hide player names and invite notifications. Avoid opening a front-end menu while live if it can expose private information.
Hi-Fi RUSH: replace licensed songs
KRAFTON says Hi-Fi RUSH’s Streamer Mode replaces licensed songs with original tracks intended to be safe for streaming. The documented route is Options > Gameplay > Other Settings. Replacement is different from simple muting: you should still confirm that the replacement audio is present in the file you intend to publish. KRAFTON cautions that “Streamer Mode is designed to reduce copyright risks but cannot guarantee complete protection.” Read the current Streamer Mode Information page when you configure the game.
Other games and publisher guidance
Some games expose a single music-volume slider, some offer a streamer preset, and some provide no special control. Ubisoft’s general guidance is to turn off in-game music before recording footage that will be posted when the game contains licensed music. That recommendation is not a blanket setting for every Ubisoft title: check the individual game’s options and current license terms.
If the game has no documented control, do not assume that lowering the master volume removes a song from every output. Music may be mixed into the same channel as effects, may return in a menu or cinematic, or may be supplied by a separate application. Test the exact scenes you plan to record.

Choose an audio layout that you can inspect and edit
Recording software cannot identify your legal rights from a waveform. Its useful job is to keep sources separable so you can omit a source before publication.
Capture only the sources you need
Make a source list before recording: game audio, microphone, voice-chat audio if permitted, alerts, and any music or browser application. Avoid capturing an entire desktop mix when the objective is to exclude music from another application. A desktop mix can also pull in notification sounds, a second player, or a web page that you did not intend to publish.
In OBS Studio, the official Knowledge Base provides an Application Audio Capture Guide and a Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide. Use the current versions of those guides for the interface and operating-system details that apply to your installation. The general arrangement is:
- Add the game as an application-audio source rather than relying on an unrestricted desktop feed, where your operating system and OBS version support that method.
- Add the microphone as its own source. Keep it separate from game audio so a music problem does not force you to discard commentary.
- Assign sources to separate recording tracks when your workflow supports multiple tracks. Keep a reviewable track containing game audio and another containing the microphone; do not assume the first track is the one your editor or platform will use.
- In the recording settings, select the tracks you actually intend to save. A source that appears separated in the mixer is not useful if the chosen output track contains the unwanted mix.
Interface names and track limits vary by release and operating system. Confirm the result with a local file, not by watching the live mixer alone.
Do a short preflight recording
Record 30 to 60 seconds that includes ordinary play, a menu transition, a voice line, and—if practical—the location where licensed music starts. Stop the recording and play it back with headphones. Check that:
- the game’s music-mute or streamer mode is still enabled after loading a save or changing areas;
- your voice is audible without clipping and is not merged with the game track;
- the intended game and microphone tracks contain the sources you expect;
- no desktop notification, browser tab, chat application, or system alert was captured;
- the video file opens correctly and has the expected picture and sound.
This is an operational check, not proof that every later scene is clear. Repeat it after changing a game, console, audio device, OBS profile, or operating-system update.

Handle graphic scenes as a capture decision
The sources available for this topic do not establish a universal recorder feature that detects and blocks every violent, sexual, disturbing, or otherwise graphic scene before it enters a file. Treat scene avoidance as a content-planning task.
Use a title-specific filter when one exists
Look in the game’s accessibility, mature-content, parental-control, or streamer sections for options that reduce gore, dismemberment, nudity, profanity, or blood effects. Read what the option actually changes. A filter may remove particles while leaving a cinematic intact, or it may affect gameplay but not promotional movies. Record a short sample after enabling it.
Plan around known cinematics
Make a list of missions, boss finishes, story transitions, and menus that may show material unsuitable for your audience or monetization target. Save before the scene when possible. Pause or stop capture before the trigger, resume after the scene, and explain the edit in your production notes rather than leaving an accidental gap unexplained. For a live broadcast, use a prepared intermission or a scene that hides the game feed while you navigate past the content.
Review and edit the actual file
Scrub the complete recording before uploading. Do not review only the highlights: graphic content can appear in a loading tip, a replay camera, a thumbnail frame, or a brief transition. Cut the section, replace it with a neutral screen, crop or blur the relevant area where that remains meaningful, and mute any accompanying audio that you do not intend to publish. Watch the exported file again because an edit can change track selection or leave a few frames at a cut point.
Console capture: when a capture card helps
A capture card is optional for a PC recording. It becomes relevant when a console sends its picture and sound to a computer running your recording software. OBS documentation lists console capture guidance and treats a capture card as a video source. Verify that the device supports your console, resolution, refresh rate, copy-protection requirements, and operating system before buying or borrowing one.
The card transfers the console’s output; it does not remove licensed music, grant distribution rights, or recognize a graphic scene. Configure the console’s own streamer or music settings first, then route the card’s audio in a way that keeps it separate from your microphone. If the console sends a combined mix, the safest control may be muting music in the game or editing the captured file afterward.

Understand Twitch’s automated response
Twitch scans VODs and clips for some copyrighted audio and may mute the detected portions. A muted VOD is not automatically a copyright strike, and an unmuted VOD is not proof that every element is authorized. A rights holder can still submit a formal claim when unauthorized material remains.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If Twitch mutes audio that you believe you had the right to use—or that was not present—you can use the appeal process described in How to Appeal Muted Audio. Appeals require you to attest to your rights or explain why the flagged audio was absent. Submit one only when you can support that explanation; an automated mute is not itself evidence that you should appeal.
Do not rely on Twitch’s scan as your editing workflow. Detection can miss material, identify it late, or affect a VOD after viewers have already seen a live broadcast. Keep your own preflight recording and review process.
Apply YouTube’s gaming rules separately from music rights
YouTube’s gaming guidance discusses graphic gameplay and cinematics in the context of advertiser-friendly monetization. A treatment that improves monetization eligibility is not a universal copyright safe harbor, and it does not authorize a soundtrack that you were not licensed to distribute. Conversely, turning off music does not guarantee that a graphic cinematic will meet every platform or advertiser rule.
Before publishing, check the current monetization guidance for the specific version of the platform, audience setting, and type of scene. If a scene may limit advertising, decide whether to omit it, edit it, age-restrict the video where appropriate, or publish it without monetization. Document the decision so a later edit does not accidentally restore the excluded footage.

| Approach | What it controls | Where the decision happens | Residual risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-game mute or streamer mode | Licensed game music, or a replacement track when the title supports it | Game settings before capture | Coverage is title-specific; menus, cinematics, and external audio still require checking |
| Application audio routing and separate tracks | Which audio sources enter each recording track | OBS or other capture software | Separation gives editing control but does not create a license; the published mix must omit the unwanted source |
| Post-recording edit | Music already captured and visual scenes in the file | Video editor before upload | Missed frames, alternate tracks, or an unreviewed export can reintroduce the problem |
| Platform detection and muting | Audio that the service’s systems identify in VODs or clips | After upload or during archive processing | Detection is not permission and does not prevent every claim or restriction |
| Console capture card | Transfers console video and audio to a computer | Hardware and capture-software setup | It does not filter music, hide graphic imagery, or grant rights |
A complete recording procedure
- Define the destination. Decide whether the material is for a live stream, a Twitch VOD, a short clip, a YouTube upload, or several of these. Each destination can process audio and graphic content differently.
- Read the game’s current guidance. Check the official support page, in-game settings, and relevant license or EULA language. Note the exact menu path and whether the option mutes music or substitutes it.
- Enable the game control. Turn on the documented streamer mode or copyrighted-audio mute. If no control exists, set a deliberate music policy—such as recording without game music—and verify what effects or dialogue remain audible.
- Design the source layout. Capture the game application, microphone, and any permitted sources separately where the software supports it. Avoid an unrestricted desktop mix.
- Mark visual hazards. Identify cinematics, finishers, menus, and other moments that could be graphic or unsuitable. Prepare a pause, hidden-game scene, save point, or edit marker for each one.
- Run the preflight. Record a short sample, listen to every intended track, inspect the picture, and confirm that no other application entered the file.
- Record conservatively. Pause or stop before a known scene rather than trusting a recorder to recognize it. If you are live, switch to a prepared scene while you pass the content.
- Inspect the entire file. Scrub video and audio from beginning to end, including menus, transitions, and the final seconds. Check every selected track.
- Edit and export. Remove or mute unwanted music, cut or obscure graphic scenes, and verify that the export uses the cleaned tracks rather than an original combined mix.
- Review the platform result. Check the uploaded preview, VOD, or clip. If a service mutes audio, use its appeal route only when you can substantiate your rights or explain that the flagged material was absent.
Troubleshooting common failures
The game music is still audible
- Confirm the game’s streamer mode survived a restart, save-load, or area change.
- Check whether the music came from a menu, cinematic, radio, jukebox, emote, or another application rather than the main gameplay channel.
- Play each recording track by itself. The clean track may exist even if the default editor preview plays a combined track.
- If the song is baked into the game mix, cut or mute that section in the editor; do not assume platform detection will remove it correctly.
The microphone disappeared when music was removed
You probably recorded a single mixed track or muted the wrong source. Restore the microphone as its own source, assign it to a track intended for publication, and repeat the preflight. If no isolated microphone exists in the original file, you may need to record commentary again or publish without it.

A VOD was muted even though streamer mode was enabled
Check the game’s documented warning and the exact timestamp. Replacement music, a trailer, a voice-chat participant, an alert, or another application can trigger detection. Preserve the local file and the game-setting evidence, then decide whether the platform’s appeal requirements are met. Streamer mode reduces risk; it is not a guarantee.
A graphic scene slipped into the upload
Remove the video from public view if necessary, edit the original file, and inspect the new export rather than trimming only the visible highlight. Check thumbnails, shorts, clips, and automatically generated previews because they may use frames from the same source.
The console picture works but audio does not
Check the console output format, capture-card compatibility, operating-system permissions, and whether another application has exclusive control of the device. Re-run a short recording after each change. A hardware signal problem is separate from copyright filtering, so solve transport first and then verify the game’s audio settings.

Keep a small session record containing the game and version, the streamer-mode or music setting, the capture-software profile, the selected recording tracks, and the scenes you skipped. Save the short preflight file until the final upload has been checked. This makes it easier to diagnose a muted archive or a missing microphone without guessing which setting changed.
Recheck the setup whenever the game, capture software, console firmware, audio driver, or platform policy changes. Individual game options and platform rules are volatile, so a menu path that worked last season may move or be removed.
Bottom line
Keep copyrighted music out of the published mix at the source whenever the game provides a verified mute or replacement mode. Use separate audio sources or tracks so you can remove anything that slips through, and treat every graphic scene as a deliberate capture-and-edit decision. Review the complete exported file before upload. Twitch or another platform may detect and mute audio, but that automation is neither a license nor a substitute for your own rights and content review.
