No. Tearing a Pokémon card is destructive, and there is no established evidence in the cited guidance that the rip test reliably proves whether a card is genuine. Check it without damaging it first; if authenticity matters, ask a trading-card specialist to evaluate it.
Why the rip test is not a reliable first check
The rip test means tearing a card to inspect its inner layers. TCGplayer says it has not conducted the experiments needed to confirm the test’s reliability. Because the card is destroyed in the process, the test carries a certain cost without providing an established answer. Do not tear a valuable card to check it.
A single physical test should not settle the question. Cards vary across eras, publishers, and foiling techniques, and physical checks can produce misleading results.
How to check a card without damaging it
Use bright light as a clue
Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through when held up to a bright light. Treat this as a warning sign, not a verdict: the guidance does not say that a card that looks opaque under light is necessarily genuine. Lighting conditions and card variations can affect what you see.

Compare it with suitable references
Compare the suspect card with a known-genuine card from an appropriate era, set, and finish. Check printed details and use official product images as a reference. A mismatched comparison can mislead, so choose a card with relevant characteristics rather than relying on an unrelated example.
Ask a specialist if you are unsure
Pokémon Support recommends asking a local shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate a potentially counterfeit card. This is the safer next step when a purchase is valuable or the available comparisons leave you uncertain.

Pokémon Support identifies sealed packs priced dramatically below suggested retail price as a warning sign. That does not prove that any particular listing is counterfeit; consider the price alongside the seller and the product, and seek specialist advice when the purchase is consequential.
