Can a PS3 Minecraft disc or purchase play on PS4?
No. The PS3 Edition and the PS4 release are separate products; PlayStation’s 2014 upgrade instructions directed PS3 owners to obtain the PS4 Edition rather than run the PS3 game on their PS4. PlayStation’s 2014 PS4 Edition announcement described a historical paid upgrade route for eligible owners. That offer is not a current purchasing instruction, and owning only the PS3 Edition does not establish a free entitlement to the PS4 game.

For current PS4 play, Minecraft Help lists Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for PlayStation 4/5. Check the current PlayStation Store or retailer listing for availability and purchase details; do not expect a PS3 disc to serve as the PS4 game.
Can you transfer a PS3 Minecraft world to PS4?
Not through the old PS3-to-PS4 conversion route. PlayStation supported importing PS3 saves to PS4 Edition historically, but Minecraft’s April 2020 migration notice said PS3 and Vita players needed to convert before April 15, 2020, and that conversion would not be available after that date. The notice also said players had to purchase Minecraft PS4 Edition to convert a save.

The deadline establishes that a new conversion through that route is no longer available. It does not say what happened to every world that had already been converted before the deadline.
Does the free PS4 Bedrock update mean PS3 owners get PS4 Minecraft?
No. PlayStation’s December 2019 announcement said the Bedrock update was free for people who already owned Minecraft on PS4. In the announcement, Mojang’s Kelsey Howard wrote, “The next time you start Minecraft, the new update will install automatically and free of charge.” That statement concerned the update for existing PS4 Minecraft owners; it did not grant a PS4 copy to people who owned only the PS3 Edition. Why the PS4 version was a separate release
When PlayStation announced the PS4 Edition in 2014, it said its worlds could be “36 times bigger” than worlds players might be used to on PS3. That is a launch-era comparison from PlayStation and Mojang, not a current performance benchmark. See the original PS4 launch announcement.
