If you want to see both early romance opportunities, pursue Shadowheart’s “truly connect” conversation first, then accept Lae’zel’s proposition before the celebration long rest. Later relationship conversations can require you to choose which romance to continue.
What “romance both” means in Baldur’s Gate 3
You can pursue both companions’ initial romance scenes as the player character. That is different from maintaining two committed relationships through the later story. The documented route guidance supports starting both in Act I, but does not establish a supported way to keep both as partners long term.
This answer concerns the player character and two companions. Larian has clarified that an NPC Origin character cannot romance another NPC Origin character; that is a separate situation from the player character romancing companions. Larian’s Community Update 26
How to open both romances in Act I
Start with Shadowheart
Make the choices that lead to Shadowheart’s “truly connect” conversation before entering another companion relationship or approaching certain other romance scenes. The timing matters: her conversation has a restriction that can make it unavailable if another romance is already underway. The romance overview describes starting her route and then accepting Lae’zel’s proposition as a way to see both initial opportunities. BG3 Wiki romance overview

Then accept Lae’zel’s proposition
Lae’zel’s route is not controlled by approval alone. Larian’s Patch 4 notes say that, besides reaching sufficient approval, the player must prove worth through their actions. The route reference describes medium approval (20) and dialogue opportunities, including an alternate way to initiate the romance. Lae’zel approval guide Larian’s Patch 4 notes
For the clearest chance to see both Act I openings, take Shadowheart’s “truly connect” conversation first and accept Lae’zel’s proposition before the celebration long rest. Camp scenes can queue behind higher-priority events, so take long rests when practical to let pending scenes play rather than assuming they have been missed or resolved. BG3 Wiki romance overview

What can block Lae’zel’s advance
Lae’zel may refuse to initiate or continue a romance because of the player’s relationship state. The route reference says her opportunity at the Act I celebration is rejected if the player is already dating two others, and that a later manual initiation conversation can be rejected if the player is already partnered with someone else. These are reasons not to treat an early opening as a guarantee of a lasting dual romance. Lae’zel romance guide
When the story asks you to choose
Shadowheart’s post-Shadowfell conversation
After you bring Shadowheart to the Shadowfell and resolve the Nightsong decision, a conversation can advance the relationship to Partnered or end it, depending on your choices and her path. Treat this as a major decision point for continuing her romance. Shadowheart romance guide

Lae’zel’s route and an existing partner
Lae’zel’s route can reject a new advance when you are partnered with someone else. Taken together, the documented route rules point to a practical choice: enjoy both early scenes if you arrange them in time, but decide which relationship to pursue when commitment conversations arise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why patch notes do not prove a dual-partner route
Larian adjusted Lae’zel’s romance initiation conditions in Patch 4, explicitly adding the requirement to prove worth through actions as well as approval. Patch 6 added epilogue reactivity involving past relationships and leaving with Lae’zel or Karlach; that change does not establish a supported simultaneous committed romance between Shadowheart and Lae’zel.
