Yes. A Raspberry Pi 5 with a 64-bit Linux installation and matching 64-bit Java can host a small modded Minecraft: Java Edition server. Fabric and NeoForge both have documented server workflows, but the practical limit depends on the modpack, world generation, simulation distance, storage, cooling and number of concurrent players. Treat a Pi 5 as a carefully tuned small-group server, not a universal replacement for a desktop or managed host.

What “running a modded server” means on a Raspberry Pi

A Raspberry Pi server runs Minecraft: Java Edition without a graphical desktop client. You install a mod loader, place the matching server files and mods on the system, then start the process from a terminal, usually in headless mode. Players connect from Minecraft: Java Edition using the server’s network address.

The main constraint is not whether the server starts. A modern Pi 5 can launch current Fabric and NeoForge configurations. The constraint is whether it can keep the main server tick on time while loading chunks, generating terrain, running machines and entities from mods, saving the world and serving every connected player. Those workloads vary dramatically between modpacks, so there is no honest universal player limit.

For a new build, the most balanced starting point is an 8GB Raspberry Pi 5 with active cooling, a reliable USB-C power supply and at least a 32GB microSD card. An SSD connected over USB 3 or through an NVMe setup is a sensible storage upgrade for worlds and backups, but available evidence does not establish a fixed Minecraft performance multiplier for one drive type, so do not buy one expecting a guaranteed percentage improvement.

Choose the right Pi 5 hardware

Why Pi 5 is the practical starting point

Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance identifies Pi 5 as the model most people should choose for current projects and lists 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB configurations. A modded server benefits from the newer board’s CPU headroom, but the amount of memory you choose determines how much room remains for the operating system, Java, the loader, mods and filesystem cache.

Component Recommendation for a new modded server Why it matters
Board Raspberry Pi 5 It is the practical starting point for this workload.
Memory 8GB is the balanced starting choice Leaves room for Java and the operating system without making the cost of a 16GB board mandatory.
Storage At least a 32GB microSD card This is the minimum capacity listed in Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance.
Cooling Active cooling Sustained server loads benefit from keeping the processor within its intended thermal range.
Power A suitable USB-C supply Server stability depends on a reliable supply during sustained CPU and storage activity.

When 2GB, 4GB or 16GB makes sense

A 2GB or 4GB model can be useful for a very small, lightly modded world, but it gives Java less room after the operating system and background services are accounted for. The 16GB configuration is attractive when you want more headroom for a large pack or additional services, yet extra memory does not remove CPU, storage or thermal limits. More RAM also does not guarantee that a heavily modded world will support more players.

Install 64-bit software and match Java to Minecraft

Use a 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS image or another 64-bit Linux distribution. Modern Minecraft does not support a 32-bit JVM, so installing a 32-bit operating system or Java runtime prevents a correct server setup regardless of the Pi’s physical memory.

Minecraft and loader guidance Java version
Fabric with Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4 Java 17
Fabric with Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer Java 21
NeoForge with Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer Java 21

These version mappings come from the Fabric and NeoForge installation guidance. Check the Minecraft version shown by the modpack before installing Java; “latest Java” is not a substitute for the version required by that pack.

Fabric provides an executable server launcher and a headless start form. The official launch pattern is:

java -Xmx2G -jar <launcher> nogui

Replace <launcher> with the executable Fabric server launcher filename. Many Fabric mods also require Fabric API, so install the API version that matches both the Minecraft release and the loader version used by your pack.

NeoForge

NeoForge has its own documented server workflow and supports current Minecraft releases with Java 21 where required. A NeoForge server is not interchangeable with a Fabric installation: use the loader specified by the modpack and obtain the server files for that exact Minecraft version.

Do not mix loader ecosystems casually

Fabric mods are not automatically compatible with Forge or NeoForge. Every mod, dependency and configuration file must target the same Minecraft version and loader family. A pack that says it is for Fabric 1.21.10 is not a safe match for a NeoForge 1.21.x server merely because the minor version looks similar.

How much memory should you allocate?

Memory allocation is a budget, not a performance setting you can maximize indefinitely. Java needs enough heap for the world and mods, while Linux and the server process need memory outside that heap. Allocating nearly all physical RAM can cause swapping or leave no room for the operating system, producing worse pauses instead of better performance.

One current Raspberry Pi 5 Fabric configuration on an 8GB board documents 2GB as a minimum and 5GB as a maximum. Treat those figures as a working example for that configuration, not a rule for every modpack. Start conservatively, watch actual use and increase the heap only when the server’s workload demonstrates a need.

  • Use the modpack author’s memory guidance when it exists.
  • Leave several gigabytes for Linux and background services on an 8GB board rather than assigning all 8GB to Java.
  • Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a larger heap, a lower view distance or a different mod caused an improvement.
  • Do not interpret a large free-memory number as proof that the CPU can keep up with world generation.

Step-by-step setup workflow

  1. Prepare the hardware. Install the 64-bit operating-system image on a microSD card, fit active cooling and connect a suitable USB-C power supply. Use at least 32GB of storage, with additional capacity if you plan to retain multiple backups.
  2. Bring the operating system up to date. Complete the normal first-boot setup, enable network access and confirm that the system is running a 64-bit userspace before installing Java or the server.
  3. Install the Java version required by the pack. Use Java 17 for Fabric releases from Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4. Use Java 21 for Fabric and NeoForge on Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer, according to the loader documentation.
  4. Choose the loader. Download the Fabric or NeoForge server files for the exact Minecraft release. Do not substitute a loader because it is newer or because a similarly named mod is available for another ecosystem.
  5. Create a dedicated server directory. Keep the launcher, libraries, mods, configuration files, world and backups together so that a restore or version change is manageable.
  6. Install the modpack and dependencies. Copy only mods built for the selected Minecraft version and loader. For Fabric packs, include Fabric API when the mod documentation requires it.
  7. Start headless and accept the server’s initial setup prompts. For Fabric, the documented form is java -Xmx2G -jar <launcher> nogui. Use the heap value appropriate to your board and pack rather than copying 2G as a universal recommendation.
  8. Stop cleanly and configure routine operation. Set the world and gameplay options required by the pack, then arrange a repeatable start command, automatic backups and a way to notice when the process exits.
  9. Test before inviting players. Generate a small test world, travel through the areas your group will use and observe tick behavior while the server is saving and generating chunks.

Performance tuning that matters most

Control world-generation pressure

New terrain is one of the most demanding moments for a small server. Pre-generating a limited area can make later exploration smoother, but a large pre-generation job can overwhelm the Pi and fill storage. Pre-generate cautiously, monitor tick time and stop if the system begins falling behind.

Lower simulation and view distance before adding more memory

Simulation distance determines how much active game logic the server processes around players; view distance determines how many chunks it sends and keeps available. Reducing these values can lower CPU and memory pressure without removing the modpack. Test the settings with the maximum number of players you expect, not only while you are standing alone at spawn.

Use performance-oriented mods only when they match the loader

The documented 8GB Fabric example uses performance mods, showing that loader-compatible optimization can be part of a Pi setup. Optimization is not automatic, however: a mod must support your exact Minecraft version and loader, and a poorly matched optimization mod can create crashes or incompatibilities.

Cooling, storage and networking

Active cooling is part of the design

A server runs for hours instead of producing a short benchmark burst. Raspberry Pi hardware documentation recommends active cooling for best performance and lists official fan options for Pi 5. Mount the cooler correctly, keep the intake and exhaust area clear and treat unexplained slowdowns during long sessions as a possible thermal issue rather than immediately assigning more RAM.

Storage is also your recovery plan

A 32GB microSD card meets the stated minimum, but world files, mod libraries and backups consume space over time. An external USB 3 or NVMe SSD can make storage management more convenient and may improve responsiveness in some setups, but the available configurations do not provide a fixed Minecraft performance multiplier. Whichever device you use, keep backups separate from the live world when possible.

Prefer Ethernet for the server connection

Ethernet provides a more predictable local connection than relying on variable wireless conditions. Network quality does not solve a server that misses ticks, but it removes one source of latency while you evaluate CPU, storage and modpack behavior.

How many players can it support?

There is no universal number. A lightly modded world with a few players may be comfortable, while a large technology or exploration pack can become difficult with fewer players if everyone travels in different directions. The factors that change the result include:

  • the number and behavior of installed mods;
  • terrain generation and how often players open new chunks;
  • simulation and view-distance settings;
  • available RAM after Linux and Java overhead;
  • storage latency and backup activity;
  • active cooling and sustained temperature; and
  • how many players are online and what they are doing simultaneously.

Use a test world as a capacity check. Have the intended group perform the activities that matter—exploration, automation, combat and travel—then watch whether the server keeps up. Increase the player count gradually instead of advertising a fixed limit based only on the Pi’s RAM size.

Two real-world configurations to use as reference points

Community configurations demonstrate feasibility but are not controlled benchmarks. One current Pi 5 Fabric repository describes an 8GB board running Fabric 1.21.10 with performance mods, a 2GB minimum and a 5GB maximum memory setting. A separate Pi 5 guide documents a 16GB board running Minecraft 1.21.7 with NeoForge 21.7.25-beta and Java 21.

These examples show that both loaders can be used on Pi 5 hardware with current releases. They do not establish that every modpack, world size or player count will perform the same way.

Troubleshooting common failures

The server refuses to start because of Java

Check the Minecraft release first, then confirm that the installed JVM is 64-bit and matches the loader’s requirement. Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer needs Java 21 in the cited Fabric and NeoForge guidance; older Fabric releases from 1.17 through 1.20.4 use Java 17.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Fabric server reports missing dependencies

Verify that every listed dependency is present and built for the same Minecraft version. Fabric API is required by many Fabric mods, but adding an arbitrary version can create a different incompatibility, so match the dependency to the pack’s release.

The server starts but lags when players explore

Reduce simulation and view distance, pause or limit pre-generation, test with fewer simultaneous explorers and inspect cooling. Exploration stresses CPU, storage and chunk generation at the same time; allocating more heap alone may not address it.

The process stops after a crash or power interruption

Keep automated backups and restart monitoring in place before exposing the server to friends. Test that a backup can actually restore the world, and retain more than one backup generation so a corrupted recent copy is not your only recovery point.

When a mini PC or hosted server is a better choice

A Pi 5 is a sensible choice when low power use, compact size, quiet operation and hands-on control matter more than maximum headroom. Compare alternatives on single-thread CPU performance during the main server tick, RAM left after the operating system, storage and backup convenience, electricity and noise, the modpack’s size, expected concurrent players and the maintenance effort you are willing to provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a stronger computer or a managed Minecraft service when your pack is large, several players will explore separate regions continuously, or you need predictable capacity without tuning hardware and monitoring the process yourself. The Pi remains useful for a small private world, testing a pack or learning server administration, but it should not be sold as an automatic substitute for higher-performance hardware.

Recommended starting checklist

  • Raspberry Pi 5, preferably the 8GB configuration for a balanced first build.
  • 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS or another 64-bit Linux distribution.
  • Java 17 for Fabric on Minecraft 1.17–1.20.4, or Java 21 for Fabric and NeoForge on 1.20.5 and newer.
  • At least 32GB of storage, with room reserved for backups.
  • Active Pi 5 cooling and a reliable USB-C power supply.
  • One loader only, with every mod and dependency matching its Minecraft version.
  • Ethernet where practical.
  • Conservative Java heap allocation, followed by testing rather than guesswork.
  • A small test world, cautious pre-generation and monitoring before inviting players.
  • Automated backups and restart monitoring before the server becomes the group’s only world.
